WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM YOUR AUDIENCE FEEDBACK?

Feedback on the Initial Treatment:

The initial comments we had about our idea in the treatment were things like “it sounds really cool”, “it’s different to what you would usually see” and “I like how it has a story to it”. They thought we’d need to make sure it is interesting enough to watch the whole way through, so we needed to get enough variation in the video and engagement to keep the audience intrigued. We gave our peers 3 different song options to see what song they liked best, however everyone had different opinions and each song was just as liked as the others, so at this point it was hard to know which song would be best to use.People also thought that the idea of having a party seen was very interesting and would be engaging to watch. They liked the idea of slow motion and thought this would help the audience to understand more about the idea behind this of being a flashback.

We were really looking forward to working on the video as people generally said they couldn’t wait to see it in action, due to it being different to anything else they would usually see.

At this stage, it was hard to ask many specific questions on the music video, so we asked some fairly broad questions to see the kind of things our audience would like to see. Survey monkey was great for this stage, seeing as the general questions meant people didn’t have to put as much effort into their answers, so more people were willing to fill out the questionnaire and it gave us a good idea of how our video could look and the type of target audience we were going for.

Feedback on Rough Cut:

Most of the comments we had on our rough cut was that we really needed to “brighten the night clips”, as it was very difficult to see anything. People “like the continuity” of the day shots, and “like the atmosphere that the video gives out”. They thought the “genre is obvious” which was helpful so we knew we had the right footage in the shots, just some of these were not very well seen.We had suggestions of filming earlier in the day and darkening these shots, and also to add a filter to the night shots to make the flashback appear more obvious.

Feedback on Digipak Roughs:

The feedback on our rough digipak was great; people were saying how professional it looked. They loved how “the girl looks like she is actually in the water”. They also thought “the font is very slick like you would see this in a shop”. Other comments were to “change the record companies on the back to blend in more to the theme of the cover”. They also said to “change the way the copyright information is formatted”. Baring all this in mind was very positive seeing as this was our draft and we still had a lot to improve on.Everyone we showed the advert draft to seemed to be happy with it. Some people thought we could maybe find ways to link this more with the digipak and video. They also suggested putting a shadow behind the album photo to let this stand out on the advert.

At this stage we needed to find out more specific opinions from the audience, and found it useful to use written feedback as people were generally more honest in these and gave us a clear idea of what worked and what didn’t. Going to the build up of our final products, I did try to do some more audience research to help, however we can see that Survey Monkey has its faults where people might not respect the survey and not give us

very clear answers, or not many people will fill it out. These

questions were more specific so could be trickier to answer as well.

This is an example of me trying this, where only two people filled out the survey and they didn’t really know much about the indie genre so it was not helpful.

We overcame this however by using verbal feedback where we showed people our products while we were with them and then asked them if they could let us know some of their opinions verbally, which helped out a lot.We asked people exactly what they liked, and what they didn’t like. What could be improved, and what could be altered to look even more appealing. We had people saying they loved how “the music works with the video” and we could “make some of the slow motion scenes even slower to add this dreamy effect”. We had repeated comments on how “the digipak looks really professional” and “there is an obvious link between the advert and the digipak”.

Feedback on Final Version of Everything:

On the whole, people thought our music video looked very good and was very entertaining. We had comments about how artistic it looks, and how well the action of the video fits to the song. Some people thought that the story was quite boring for them and they would have preferred to see more of a party video, but these are obviously people who don’t fit into our indie target audience. Some people thought it was beautifully shot and really told the story well. We asked

people through Facebook and Survey Monkey. We’ve learnt that the video was a great success, and people are complimenting us about how it is so different to other music videos and doesn’t follow typical media conventions you would expect to see in a music video.

The digipak feedback was very positive with people saying it looks like something they would see on iTunes, and how professional the finished product looks. People said they really liked how well the editing is, from how we made the water image and girl look like she is in the water. People also commented on the blue theme and said this was very calm, but at the same time eye-catching to see, therefore making it stand out.The advert was similar, saying we linked this to the digipak well, and it looked like a real magazine advert. I showed people it and they didn’t even think I was showing them my work at first, and were surprised when I told them I was showing what we had produced in media.

From the audience feedback, we learnt that you are not going to get very precise answers. Some people do not want to take time to fill out surveys and that is entirely up to them. We therefore learnt that we needed to ask people who were willing to answer the questions, rather than asking people who didn’t care and gave us unhelpful answers. By using different types of media we also managed to collect more varied answers which helped us with our coursework overall.
