Journey to three Slavic countries —

Belarus, Ukraine and Russia — all with fascinating

histories and rapidly emerging markets. Travel

from a corner of the Soviet past in Belarus to the

ancient capital of the Slavs, golden Kiev, and then

journey to the Crimean Peninsula. This region is

packed with historical significance — the location

of an ancient Greek seafaring colony as well as

the place where the fate of post-World War II

Europe was decided. Moscow, Russia’s political

capital, which rose to prominence during Mongol

domination, is the capstone of our tour. You can

also continue your travels with an optional post-

trip extension to St. Petersburg.

W H A T T O E X P E C TWe consider this program to be moderately strenuous. Daily excursions may involve up to one mile of walking on city streets, sometimes over cobblestones or on unpaved streets. In many instances, such as museums or cathedrals, guided tours require climbing up and down several flights of stairs where steps may be steep, uneven and/or without handrails, and elevators are limited or unavailable. Some sites do not allow motorcoaches to pull directly in front, thus requiring a several minutes walk to reach the entrance. Participants must be physically fit, active and in good health. We welcome travelers 15 years of age and older on this program.

DAVID HOLLOWAY is the Raymond A. Spruance Professor in International History in the departments of history and political science and a senior fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute. Born in Dublin, Ireland, he joined the Stanford faculty in 1986. Much of his work has been connected with the Soviet Union and Russia. “This is a region in which social and political issues present themselves with enormous intensity,” he says. “That’s what makes it so fascinating. It is amazing to watch Russia, Belarus and Ukraine grappling with the problems of creating new economies and political systems and sorting out their relations with one another and with Europe.”

Former director of the Freeman-Spogli Institute for International Studies

Former co-director of the Center for International Security and Cooperation
