The mission of the European Society of Radiology is to serve the healthcare needs of the general public by supporting scientific research, education and training while constantly striving to improve the quality of radiological practice.
Founded in 2005, the European Society of Radiology is an apolitical, non-profit organisation dedicated to strengthening and unifying European radiology. With more than 62,000 members across the globe, it has grown to become the largest radiological society in the world and hosts one of the biggest and most innova-tive scientific meetings in Europe, the European Congress of Radiology, in Vienna each year. The Society works closely with national radiological societies across Europe and further afield, while establishing relationships with major international organisations from other related fields. It also monitors developments on the EU level which could have an impact on research and practice in radiology, with the best interests of the patient as its overriding goal.

cated to empowering patients and ensuring that medical professionals work together with them. The International Day of Radiology, on November 8 each year, is an initiative to promote the work of radiologists to the wider public while celebrating Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen’s discovery of the x-ray. The ESR’s Patient Advisory Group for Medical Ima-ging is chaired by a patient group representative and aims to bring patients and medical imaging professionals together in order to improve health-care. Another of our recent initiatives is the Euro-Safe Imaging campaign, which aims to safeguard patient care by promoting radiation protection in medical imaging across Europe.
Sharing and disseminating scientific research is ano-ther core task of the ESR, and our flagship peer- reviewed journal, European Radiology has grown to become a widely respected publication with its impact factor rising steadily since its launch. Our innovations in electronic publication, EURORAD and EPOS give researchers access to a huge range of clinical cases and scientific posters, providing them with invaluable research material.
The key to progress in any discipline or profession is education and training: something we are really passio-nate about at the ESR. The European School of Radio-
logy forms part of the ESR’s mission to harmonise radiological education and training in Europe. It has been enormously successful over its five years, hos-ting courses across the globe. But we don’t just stop at providing education; we ensure that it’s accessible. Our Invest in the Youth and Rising Stars programmes allow young trainees with fewer resources to attend the ECR free of charge, giving the next generation of radiolo-gists the valuable experience and education they need to further their careers. Trainees are also represented within the ESR through the Radiology Trainees Forum, made up of 41 national delegates from around Europe and a number of non-voting international delegates. By supporting trainees and giving them a voice we are investing in the next generation of radiologists and ensuring the future of our discipline.
I hope you will take the time to look through our brochure which will give you a better overview of all the cutting-edge services and initiatives the ESR has launched to strengthen and support the science and discipline of radiology.
Regards,
Lorenzo Bonomo, ESR President
Dear Reader,As President of the European Society of Radiology, it is my great pleasure to welcome you to the world’s largest radiological society. We represent more than 62,000 members from around the world and we provide them with services that allow them to develop their careers and respond to the constant changes taking place within our discipline.
I am also proud to preside over a society that has made major contributions to key issues which affect radiology and that remains committed to making further progress into the future. We work with a number of scientific societies at a European and international level to ensure that our members have a say when it comes to developments in healthcare. This forms part of our main mission, which is to serve the healthcare needs of the general public by sup-porting scientific research, education and quality in clinical practice.
Facilitating the exchange of ideas and knowledge is a vital part of our work, and every year our annual meeting, the European Congress of Radiology (ECR), attracts more than 20,000 of the best and brightest minds in radiology and allied sciences to Vienna. The ECR is one of the most innovative and dynamic meetings of its kind. With the online strea-ming service ECR Live, medical professionals and scientists from all over the globe can now participate from home and the congress is now recognised as a green meeting by the Austrian State, a result of our continuing efforts to make the congress as ecologi-cally sustainable as possible.
But we are not only committed to giving radiolo-gists and other scientists a voice, we are also dedi-

The European Congress of Radiology is the annual scientific meeting of the European Society of Radiology. Each year it brings together more than 20,000 of the best and brightest in radiology, allied sciences and other medical professions to share and exchange the latest innovations in the field of radiology. The ECR takes place in the beautiful city of Vienna, Austria each year, giving it a central location in Europe with excellent flight and rail connections. One of the meeting’s major innovations, ECR Live, allows people from anywhere in the world to take part from home, with live streaming footage of the meetings sessions. Sustainability is a guiding principle for the ESR and its meeting, and the ECR is officially recognised as a Green Meeting by the Austrian State.

Celebrated on November 8, each year, the International Day of Radiology (IDoR) marks the day Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen discovered x-rays in 1895. The first IDoR took place in 2012, and has grown to become an internationally celebrated occasion with more than 100 national radiological societies having taken part in the 2013 celebrations. But the ESR’s IDoR outreach isn’t simply limited to medical and professional organisations, it actively engages with professionals and the wider public via major social media channels like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. In the run-up to IDoR 2013, posts by and about the official IDoR page were seen 881,762 times and IDoR-related posts by the official ESR Facebook page were seen 892,298 times with 90% of the views coming from those not already fans of the page, making the social media campaign a particularly effective one.
Informing the public about medical imaging is a core aim of the IDoR campaign and the ESR, in conjunction with its partners, has developed a number of publications to provide the general public with an insight into imaging and how it’s involved in several areas of healthcare. Since 2012, two booklets have been published on two different IDoR themes: Making Cancer Visible: The Role of Imaging in Oncology in 2012 and Breathe Easy: How Radiology helps to Find and Fight Lung Diseases in 2013.
To celebrate IDoR the ESR also produces publications for those with an interest in the development of the discipline. The Story of Radiology is a series of books on the history of medical imaging and the scientific pioneers who made the discoveries behind today’s cutting-edge imaging technology. Each year a new volume is published on November 8, and 2014 will see the launch of the third instalment of this highly popular publication.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF RADIOLOGY (IDOR)
In 2011, the ESR launched the European Day of Radiology as a campaign to promote the role of radiology in modern healthcare and help inform the general public about the benefits of this vital medical profession. It proved to be a big success, and the ESR then teamed up with the Radiological Society of North America and the American College of Radiology to launch the International Day of Radiology.

In 2014, there were eight examinations with a total of 294 candidates. The figures for 2013 matched the number of examinations and almost the number of candidates (319) of all three previous years put together. The EDiR examination at ECR 2015 will have even more candidates than last year’s ECR. This confirms the exponential growth of EDiR since its first examination in 2011.
The first examination in Poland took place in 2014, which was especially significant as EDiR is equivalent to the Polish state’s specialisation examination. This represents a huge step forward towards official recognition of EDiR, setting a precedent for other European countries to follow.
Over EDiR’s four years, more than 600 candidates from 47 different countries from all around the world have sat the examination: 74% were ESR full members, 26% were ESR corresponding members, and over 80% of candidates passed the exam.
EUROPEAN DIPLOMA IN RADIOLOGY (EDIR)
The European Diploma in Radiology (EDiR) is a diploma available to radiologists and designed to cater for a new generation of internationally mobile professionals. INVESTING IN THE NEXT GENERATIONEnsuring the future of our discipline is one of the main goals of the ESR. It has developed a number of initiatives to make the society and its annual meeting, the ECR, even more attractive to younger radiologists, radiologists-in-training and medical students. The rising popularity of these features is reflected in increasing numbers of young delegates at the ECR and an enormous boost in the ESR’s social media activities. At ECR 2014, residents and students constituted 21.5% of all delegates.
One example of the ESR’s commitment to fostering future generations of radiologists is the Invest in the Youth programme, which was initiated in 2003. As part of this programme, the ESR invites radio-logists-in-training (under the age of 35 and ESR members) and radiographers-in-training (aged 30 or younger and ESR members) to apply for a place by submitting an oral or poster abstract. Since its foundation eleven years ago, approximately 4,000 candidates have participated in the programme. Successful applicants are granted free registration for the ECR and four nights’ hotel accommodation.
INVEST IN THE YOUTH SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME
In addition to the Invest in the Youth programme, the ESR has developed dedicated programmes for residents and students at the ECR called Rising Stars. Three basic sessions present basic facts and knowledge, specially tailored to residents and stu-dents. RISING STARS AT ECR
The Radiology Trainees Forum (RTF) is the ESR organisation for radiology trainees. Its objective is to represent trainees’ interests within the ESR, especially with regard to education, careers, rese-arch and exchange programmes.
The main goal of the RTF is to provide an equal level of radiological knowledge and skills for radio-logy trainees around Europe. To achieve this, the RTF participates in ESR discussions on educational issues and provides input into decisions on training in all fields of radiology. The RTF Board represents European radiology trainees and young radiologists on ESR committees and subcommittees.
The RTF also acts in collaboration with the ESR to encourage radiology trainees to share knowledge and experience by increasing their participation in exchange programmes, ESOR courses, and con-gresses. The RTF Board members conduct regular surveys to assess aspects of interest for the RTF.

Euro-BioImaging is a pan-European infrastructure project with a mission to build imaging infrastructure across Europe that can provide open access to inno-vative biological and medical imaging technologies for European researchers. The preparatory project was funded by the EU and currently member states that signed the Memorandum of Understanding are finalising the basic principles for operating the rese-arch infrastructure.
Euro-BioImaging will be governed by representatives of its European member countries (Euro-BioImaging member states).
The infrastructure established by Euro-BioImaging will consist of a set of interlinked imaging facilities (Euro-BioImaging Nodes) located across Europe, which will be selected from among the leading Euro-pean imaging facilities based on an independent evaluation process.
By providing access to and training in imaging tech-nologies, and by sharing best practice and image data, Euro-BioImaging will drive European innovation in imaging research and technologies.
The Imaging Observatory is an online library of quan-titative imaging data available to ESR members. It collects objective data on imaging from across Europe and beyond and presents it in an easily accessible
format. The Imaging Observatory helps raise awa-reness about the status of imaging with a focus on Europe and provides a central access point for ima-ging data.
