6REMBRANDT VAN RIJN(dutch 1606-1669)CHRIST HEALING THE SICK (THE HUNDRED GUILDER PRINT)Etching, engraving, and drypoint11 1/16 x 15 11/16 in. (28 x 40cm) ca. 1700[Bartsch 74]provenance:Private Collection, Pennsylvania.note:Rembrandt’s most famous etching, “Christ Healing the Sick,” is an amalgamation of episodes fromchapter 19 of the Gospel of St. Matthew, in which the essence of Christ’s ministry is conveyed. Likelycompleted in 1649, the print features a diversity of printmaking styles and techniques, a result ofRembrandt working on the print over several years. The rich areas of black on the right part of thecomposition contrast severely with the delicate handling of line on the left. Rembrandt also varied thepapers and amount of ink used on each impression, making each print genuinely unique. The print is most commonly known as “The Hundred Guilder Print” and has been since the 18thcentury. There are various origin stories to the name, with a popular one being that Rembrandt himselfpaid this princely sum at auction for one of his own impressions. While the present work is a posthumous print done shortly after the artists death, the print was madebefore the plate was acquired by the Irish printmaker known as “Captain William Baillie,” who alteredthe composition.$20,000-30,000

Traditionally known as "Girlwith a Viol da Gamba," the presentwork featured only the femalefigure at right - probably the MuseErato, muse of lyric poetry. A latercleaning revealed the male figure at left.It is worth noting that the presentpainting is also very closely relatedto two paintings ascribed to JosephHeintz the Elder (German/Swiss1564-1609) recently offered atauction, each smaller in size thanthe present painting and with thefigures depicted in slightly different

Ward Bissell, "Artemisia Gentileschi and theAuthority of Art," 1999, footnote 46, p. 405, where thepainting is given to Gramatica. Referencing theGentileschi-Gramatica confusion, Bissell notes: "In 1941a Girl with a Viol da Gamba, then the property of theSchaeffer Galleries of New York, was exhibited in SanFrancisco under Artemisia's name (Italian BaroquePainting, Palace of the Legion of Honor, May 16-June 15,
1941, pp. 17 no. 41, 37). In all probability representingthe Muse Erato, this canvas is absolutely characteristicof Antiveduto Gramatica, by whom the remains of twoseries of Muses, both in Turin, have been recognized."(One in the Circolo Ufficiali di Presidio, the other in thePalazzo Chiablese). "The style of the ex-Schaefferpicture (at 1.05 x .807 m. somewhat smaller in size than the other examples) is more closely related to the remaining works in the first-named series than tothose in the second, yet speaks of an earlier momentstill in Antiveduto's career, specifically between 1610and 1615."$15,000-20,000
