EULYNX: The Role and Importance of Reference Testing in the Development of Open Signalling Standards Frans Heijnen - Braunschweig 14 October 2015
DB follows a three-step approach to standardize signalling systems and to “get ready” for rollout
25
Reference implementation (first project already in operation!)
Pre-series (Portfolio of 5 projects have been defined)
Series production (rollout plan in preparation)
§ Proof of concept § Each project realizes single
interfaces of the new “SCI-standard”
§ Specification in cooperation with all suppliers. Based on formal methods.
§ Consideration of EULYNX requirements where feasible
§ Implementation projects are: (SCI-) - LX: Friedrichshafen (12/2016)
- RBC: Neuwiederitzsch (in operation)
- ILS: Kreiensen / Naensen (03/2016)
- TDS, PM, LS: Annaberg-Buchholz (08/2016)
§ Each project realizes all new standard interfaces
§ Cooperation between all suppliers § Finalization of specification based
on formal methods § Consideration of EULYNX
requirements
§ Target costs per SEU § Efficient construction phase § Area-wide renewal of old signalling
systems
> 15 Mio. €
> 100 Mio. €
Formal specification and sophisticated testing are preconditions to execute our strategy

EULYNX: The Role and Importance of Reference Testing in the Development of Open Signalling Standards Frans Heijnen - Braunschweig 14 October 2015
As DB we have made first steps in using formal methods and simulation . We want to go on!
§ We have applied formal methods to describe the system behavior
§ A stimulus-response specification of a system can already be executed
§ To reduce technical problems during the rollout phase, we want to increase our test capability
Test of a system specified in stimulus-response form
injecting stimulus observing response

§ Objectives: § Capacity increase and cost reduction by encouraging „zero-on-site-testing“
§ Development costs decrease (-25%), reduced time for approvals due to cross acceptance
§ Desired output: § European test methodology & language
§ Our role: § We contribute our experience in requirements and specifications.
§ We offer our market potential and connections to implement and exploit the new procedures.
§ Planned collaborations: § All FM & AM, authorities and research institutes to unify the requirements for a European solution
As partner in Shift2Rail we promote the results of EULYNX as
basis for an European test methodology TD 2.6

ProRail in its signalling business…
Lean and mean organisation: focus on signalling and external partners - internal: BU AM: Signalling department, as technology department
BU Projects: implementation & projectmanagement of signalling projects and verification&validation of scheme layouts BU Finance: Business Control, Procurement
- External: certified Engineering Bureaus, certified Contractors, certified Maintenance Contractors, various suppliers
ProRail and EULYNX, oct 14th 2015 5
ProRails objectives in EULYNX or: the WWWWW question
Why do we participate:
ProRail and EULYNX, oct 14th 2015 6
- To capitalize previous results and knowledge - Because we NEED to! We can’t continue our spend: the Government is reducing year by year its
annual financial support - We need to speed up. Was the life time expectancy of a mechanical IXL some 80 years and relay IXL’s lasted over 50 years, the nowadays electronic IXL’s last maybe not even 25 years!
ProRails objectives in EULYNX or: the WWWWW question
What do we want to achieve:
ProRail and EULYNX, oct 14th 2015 7
- Standardization - Cost reduction => * increase of competition
* increase of exchangeability between subsystems * optimal cross acceptance
* in case of renewal: option to maintain certain subsystems - Reduced dependency on a single supplier
ProRails objectives in EULYNX or: the WWWWW question
Where do we implement it:
ProRail and EULYNX, oct 14th 2015 8
- In conventional and in ERTMS signalling projects. - The results so far are tendered in: PVT: our conventional renewal plan of the oldest relay IXL’s, Vechtdallijnen: the open standard electronic IXL’s, - The results will be implemented in tenders for: axle counters (2016), ERTMS roll out plan (2017 =>) Signalling specs: main line, regional line, ETCS line.
ProRails objectives in EULYNX or: the WWWWW question
When should it be ready:
ProRail and EULYNX, oct 14th 2015 9
- YESTERDAY ! J
ProRails objectives in EULYNX or: the WWWWW question
Who will benefit:
ProRail and EULYNX, oct 14th 2015 10
- Infra Managers: cost reduction, competition, standardization, time reduction as result of enhanced cross acceptance, test standards,
- Suppliers: reduction of R&D costs, shorter time-to-market, reduction in stock due to standardization & less varieties, optimized technical support.
ProRails objectives in EULYNX or: the WWWWW question
Who will benefit:
ProRail and EULYNX, oct 14th 2015 11
- Engineering bureaus: highly effective use of scarce resources, (more) automated engineering which will lead to an accelerated engineering process.
- (Maintenance) Contractors: standardization reduces training costs, reduced stock, effective use of scarce resources.
