FROM OUR PRINCIPAL
Hello everyone!Hello everyone!Hello everyone!Hello everyone!
This week our students in Years 3,5,7 & 9 undertook the NAPLAN
testing for this year. Well done to all students who tried their best!
Thank you to all staff who assisted with the testing organisation on the
three days, and also classroom teachers for their work towards
improving Literacy and Numeracy in the lead up to these tests. Results
will return later this year, most likely in Term 4. If parents/caregivers
have any questions, please feel free to contact the class/home group
teacher, or a member of the leadership team to assist.
On Thursday this week we held a special assembly for our Operation
Flinders Team, and once again thanked all those involved. Photos are
included in this edition and we thank George Laughton for his
photography also.
Just a friendly reminder that if your child is absent from school, we
require a note or telephone call to inform us of the illness or special
circumstance that your child is not attending school for the day.
Have a great week everyone!Have a great week everyone!Have a great week everyone!Have a great week everyone!

OPERATION FLINDERS
On Wednesday 2nd May, Mr Crouch and 10 students from Years 9, 10 and 11 left Eudunda at
6:15am to go on a 7½ hour bus ride to Yankaninna Station, approximately 100 kilometres east of Leigh Creek, in the Flinders Ranges. This was for an eight day exercise to improve our confidence, team work, helping others and engaging problems and fears that may have occurred. After the long bus ride we had an introduction to the exercise throughout the rest of the day. This included what we were expected to do while we were at the camp sites, such as setting up “hootchies” to sleep under at night. We were then told how to set up the camp, doing jobs such as having a leader to make sure things are getting done (like digging a toilet hole), getting a fire going, cooking the dinner for the night and washing up. Each day we would take turns doing all the jobs . Here is a quick summary of the week. Thursday we climbed two mountains, one at 770 metres high which we called ‘Fundunda’ and the other at 880 metres high which we called ‘Eudunda peak’. On Friday, while we were looking for water in a creek bed, we met an elderly couple. We started to talk to them and they then invited us to have pancakes at their shed, which they lived in. We stayed there for a few hours getting to know how they live. We then told them how we live. They have been living in the bush for about 42 years with no electricity, and just living on what comes their way from the bush such as rabbit, kangaroo and whatever they have to kill. The pancakes were great! Friday was our first night walk which meant we could have more time for Saturday’s activity. Saturday was a challenge, as we needed to face our fears by abseiling down a cliff wall, which was a great experience. Sunday, Monday and Tuesday were all long but relaxing days. We walked approximately 20 kilometres each day. We were fortunate enough to have a barbecue prepared by Poe from Masterchef, as she was participating with another group. Overall, the exercise was a great experience, even though it was challenging at times. It is great to know that our group accomplished 110 kilometres, which is like walking from Eudunda to the Adelaide Show Grounds. RYAN HARVALIK Year 11 Student

On Tuesday 15th May the Year 11 Chemistry class
visited Craneford Wines in Truro where students had the opportunity to view the chemistry behind wine making and the processes involved in alcohol fermentation. After taking a tour around the winery and being taught about the wine making process, the students were split into three groups and had the chance to work in the lab, fill barrels and package wine bottles. The lab activity involved students testing the pH and tartaric acid levels in the wine. The wine packaging involved students trying to keep up with the bottling machine and the barrel fillers filled barrels with left over wine and cleaned tanks. Throughout the day the groups rotated so each student was able to participate in the different activities. We look forward to working with Craneford Wines again in the near future. Last Wednesday, 9th May, the Year 12s attended a SATAC information session at Kapunda High
School. Flinders University teamed up with the University of South Australia to present information about courses, entry requirements, ATAR scores and accommodation options. This was the first time Adelaide University and TAFESA were not represented at this annual event. Students were informed about admission dates and website details, overseas travel opportunities and scholarships. It was great to see many students approaching the presenters at the end of the session to gather more information. Our students were excellent ambassadors for our school, displaying our school values including Respect and Responsibility. Important messages of the day were:
• Electronic SATAC applications open on Monday 6th August and close on Friday 28
th
September - those students who wish to apply to any of the South Australian Universities (or Charles Darwin University) should do so by the 28
th September to avoid a hefty late fee.
• There are many scholarship opportunities available to students - visit the website to check out what scholarships you qualify for - many scholarships have no applicants!
• Be proactive! Students should do their own research. Links to TAFESA and the Universities can be found at www.satac.edu.au. This is an extensive website that has information about courses, accommodation, scholarships etc.
