EUBO MOBILE BAROQUE ACADEMY
Pathways & Performances
Courses 2016-2018
EUBO Mobile Baroque Academy (EMBA) builds
on the 30-year successful track-record of the
European Union Baroque Orchestra (EUBO) in
providing training and performing opportunities
for young EU orchestral musicians and a bridge
into the profession. Between 2015 and 2018
the EMBA project will extend and develop the
possibilities for players of baroque instruments
who intend to pursue a professional career.
EMBA is broader in scope than the ‘EUBO’
programme: it offers a pathway from an earlier
stage of conservatoire training via orchestral
experience through to the first steps in the
professional world. The EMBA project
addresses the unequal provision across Europe
of opportunities for baroque music education
for performers and audiences. EMBA identifies
areas where the playing field can be levelled in
the early music sector and will establish four
‘bridges’ (listed below) to meet these needs.
EMBA will nurture talent, maintain performance
quality, and encourage creativity and the mobility
of artists and ideas. The activities of EMBA
comprise music education (masterclasses,
courses), performances (international touring,
recordings), audience development (including
schools work, and a project with puppeteers),
an orchestral apprentice scheme, and a digital
programme of interviews, comment and advice
related to baroque music and period
performance.
EMBA’s ‘bridges’ are: N-S-E-W: to reduce the geographical divergence in resources and opportunities
Performer <-> Audience: to create inspirational live experiences and engage audiences
Student -> Professional: to equip young musicians with a portfolio of skills
Live -> Digital: to embrace new technologies to disseminate expertise, performances and resources

Other Educational Activities
Tutor + 1: the Royal Conservatoire The Hague sends world-class music professors to Higher Music Education institutions on multiple occasions during the EMBA project to give tuition over 2 days to students and teachers.
Interactive digital masterclasses: tuition delivered remotely from the Royal Conservatoire The Hague to participating institutions. This activity will be developed, tested and delivered over the project and it is anticipated that 12 interactive digital masterclasses will be delivered by the end of 2018.
Early Music Platforms (EMPs): the Association Européenne des Conservatoires promotes three Early Music Platforms taking place in November 2015 (CZ), March 2017 (NL) and December 2018 (MT). Presently there are only ±40 full-scope conservatoire early music departments, most concentrated in western European countries. EMPs focus on the role of conservatoires in preparing early music students for professional life, and the balance between taught skills and ‘real life’ experience. EMPs consist of two days of conference discussions, with contributions from artists and faculty members working with the EMBA project and a performance of baroque repertoire by EUBO. Participants (80-100 per EMP) include conservatoire teachers, administrators, students and concert promoters throughout Europe.
Baroque Bytes: Digital actions of EMBA are known collectively by the title ‘Baroque Bytes’. Digital content such as audio-visual material for online sharing, DigiPods with an anthology of material about a core piece of baroque orchestral repertoire, including musicological background and a digitalised score, audio or video recordings of EUBO rehearsal and performance, and interviews in different languages with the Faculty and orchestra members is made available in social media and on EUBO’s website. Social Media: All participants and friends of the EMBA project are encouraged to share news and comment in social media to solicit engagement in the field of historically informed performance .
