Make your own luck todayMilitary training actually

contributes to the cause ofPTSD.During basic training, for

example, I grinned one daywhile a cadre was yelling atme. Meant nothing by it, I’ma happy guy. But it was ahint of things to come, and itwas a mistake because the

cadre took it as a lack of seri-ousness. I never grinnedagain.Later, during an infantry

officer course, my instructorsstressed over and over that Iimpacted my environment.Over and over in a fabricatedwar environment, at the mostchaotic moments, they got in

my face and screamed,“Whatcha gonna do PL?Whatcha gonna do?” Because Platoon Leaders

are not only responsible forwhat their soldiers do. Theyare responsible for what hap-pens to them. When I made amistake, the instructors madesure I knew that I had justkilled my platoon. Theirdeaths, their injuries, theirfailures were mine. One time, I chose to help

an injured soldier instead ofmaneuvering against theenemy. The instructor

stopped everything. He toldme my responsibility was themission, not the injured sol-dier. We repeated the exer-cise, and this time I walkedby the injured soldier andtoward the enemy position. The injured soldier, presum-ably, would be dealt withlater.I learned three unwritten

rules: Suppress my emotion, the mission comes first, andeverything is my responsibil-ity.

This Week’s Birthdays

As luck would have it, todayis Friday the 13th. and I'mgoing to guess that since you'rereading this, you did not stay inbed today in an attempt toavoid any unfortunate events. Of course, somewhere out

there is a paranoid, supersti-tious, conspiracy theorist wholeft their house today just longenough to grab a BristowNews, a bag of Fritos and a canof bean dip and they are nowback home huddled in the fetalposition on their sofa wearingtheir tinfoil cap, reading ChaosTheory and watching for con-trails in the sky, vowing to gonowhere else today to mini-mize their exposure to bad luckof any kind.Myself, I do not subscribe to

the superstitions of bad luckbecause superstitions aren'treal, knock on wood.Admittedly, you won't find

me smashing mirrors underladders while black cats run ina circle around me becausethere's no sense tempting fate, right? But as a rule, supersti-tions don't scare me.With that said, it is fairly rare

to have consecutive Friday the13ths from one month to thenext and it's happening now.Last month and this month hadpretty much the same calendardates and one of those wasFriday the 13th.So, one month ago today,

Friday, Feb. 13, I woke up,rolled out of bed and startedmy day like it was any otherday as I headed down the hallto roust Youngest Daughterfrom her precious sleep. This waking up Youngest

Daughter process has evolvedinto a multi-step process thatcould, and should, be a topicfor a future column, but I won'tbore you with those details...yet.Youngest Daughter, once she

had shaken out the teenagedcobwebs and was as lucid as ateenaged girl could be at 5 a.m.on a Friday morning said, “Doyou know what day it is?”“Friday?” I say.“The 13th,” she says, “and

I'm not going anywhere.”“You certainly aren't going

anywhere in life if you skipschool today, but your cellphone will go to work withme,” I said, being the creative-ly diplomatic dad that I am.She just sighed and said,

“Okay, do you know what elsetoday is?”I shook my head, wondering

where this conversation was

going since she is constantlyon the prowl for any tidbit oftrivial knowledge she mightneed to share.“It's the first Friday the 13th

of the year, so that makes it'National Blame Someone ElseDay,'” she said.“You made that up,” I said.“You can't blame me,” she

said. “Not today. It's a realthing. Google it,” she said.I'm not one to argue with

Google because if you're cre-ative enough, you can prettymuch substantiate anythingwith Google. I played along.“You know what else today

is?” she asked.“National get your butt out

of bed so you're not late forschool day?” I said.“Nope,” she said.“Yes it is, Google it.” I said. She ignored that and said,

“It's National Get a DifferentName Day.”I don't know where she

comes up with this stuff, butwhen you think about it, thesetwo National Days falling onthe same calendar date create asomewhat scary situationbecause in all reality, one couldimagine doing something ille-gal, immoral, or just plain stu-pid and blame it on anybodyelse and not get fingered for itbecause it's National BlameSomeone Else Day and then, tobe on the safe side, they couldget a different name, just in theevent they got blamed fordoing something else by some-one else.As luck would have it, none

of that stuff happened to me ormine and that perfect storm ofNational Days is now behindus. This month is a whole new

set of problems because today,Friday the 13th, exposes us to awhole new set of potentiallycompromising circumstancesbecause today, Friday, March13, is National Everything YouThink is Right, is Wrong Day,so when you assert you areright today, you actually aren't.The only saving grace is the

fact that no one else is going tobe right today either... couplethis phenomenon with the uni-versally accepted bad luck ofFriday the 13th and maybe weshould all stay home and eatFritos and bean dip and readthe paper on the couch... whatcould go wrong there?
