They think they hear sounds of wild animals. Teresa even believes that someone is kept inside their neighbour’s storehouse. They hear slapping, smashing and gunshots. What really happened in the storehouse? Only their new neighbour can explain that! Communicative functions 1. To learn about the formation and use of words that imitate sounds 2. To recognize words such as roar, hiss, vroom, beep, bang that imitate the sounds associated with actions or objects 3. Programme OutlineOne day, Max and Teresa find some strange sounds coming out of their new neighbour’s garden. They think they hear sounds of wild animals. Teresa even believes that someone is kept inside their neighbour’s storehouse. They hear slapping, smashing and gunshots. What really happened in the storehouse? Only their new neighbour can explain that!

associated with actions or objects 3. To recognize the use of interjections to convey emotions such as oops, uh-oh, argh

Suggested activities1. Introduce the programme briefly.2. Watch the programme together. Draw pupils’ attention to the sounds of the animals

and the sound words on screen. In the later part of the programme, there are more sound words associated with actions and objects introduced.

3. This is a programme to develop pupils’ acute listening skills. They can learn about the use of onomatopoeic words to describe the sounds they hear. Onomatopoeic words are words that sound exactly or almost exactly the things they represent. Sound words can help readers imagine a scene or a story more easily while reading.

Similarly, interjections such as “Argh” and ‘Uh-oh” can help readers feel the emotions intended to convey.

List of the onomatopoeic words in the programme: a. Squawk b. Woof c. Roar d. Trumpet e. Hiss f. Pop g. Smash h. Slap i. Click

j. Bang k. Vroom l. Beep List of the interjections in the programme

m. Argh n. Uh-oh4. In the programme, some sound words represent more than one thing or one action.

For example, “pop” may be used to refer to balloon bursting or the popcorn being heated in an oven. After watching the programme, tell pupils to choose the correct sound word to fill in the boxes or circles in the pictures in COPYMASTER 1. Replay the recap segment which is near the end of the programme when necessary.

Answers: a. When a balloon bursts, you can hear--- “Pop”. b. When the popcorn is heated in the oven, you can hear--- “Pop”.

c. When someone slaps someone else’s face, you can hear--- “Slap”. d. When he hits a mosquito on his arm, you can hear--- “Slap”. e. When the mouse turns on the TV, you can hear---“Click”.f. When someone switches on a light, you can hear ---“Click”.
