EtherNet/IP Introduction

• EtherNet/IP – EtherNet/IP(Ethernet Industrial Protocol) is a communications protocol originally

developed by Rockwell Automation, currently managed by the Open DeviceNet Vendors Association (ODVA) and designed for use in process control and other industrial automation applications

• Behaviors – Transfer of basic I/O data via User Datagram Protocol (UDP)-based implicit messaging

– Uploading and downloading of parameters, setpoints, programs and recipes via TCP (i.e., explicit messaging.)

– EtherNet/IP makes use of well known TCP port number 44818 for explicit messaging and UDP port number 2222 for implicit messaging

– EDS (electronic data sheet) file

Implicit and Explicit Message

• Explicit – The block is then triggered as needed. This type of communication does not load the

network with continuous responses.

Implicit and Explicit Message

• Implicit – The implicit form of communication does not require triggering. Implicit messaging is

deterministic. This means it is possible to estimate the data’s travel rate. RPI (Request Packet Interval)must be set before connecting.
