On Saturday, April 16, Fort Bend County Precinct 3 Commissioner Andy Meyers hosted the Literary & Fine Arts Festival & Parade at Cinco Ranch Library, in partnership with Summer Fest. Approximately 5,000 were in attendance – a record. An entertaining mix of 89 vendors set up for the four-hour event, offering everything from kids’ activities to summer camps to shopping to the best of food trucks, as well as local favorites. Adding to the excitement were first-response vehicles from Fort Bend County, including a firetruck, an ambulance, police cars and motorcycles - all packed into the parking lot of the library. There was even a board- breaking demonstration from Tiger Rock Martial Arts of Katy. The festival kicked off with a helicopter fly-over by the Sheriff’s department and the Cutest Character Parade, which was led by the Seven Lakes High School Drum Line. Cheerleaders and drill-team members from Katy ISD high schools joined in the fun, representing Katy, Cinco Ranch, Seven Lakes, Taylor and Tompkins. Children from age 2 to 10 competed in the costume parade by dressing up in their favorite storybook characters and marching through LaCenterra at Cinco Ranch. They were joined by volunteer theatre students from Cinco Ranch, McMeans, and WoodCreek Junior High schools “playing their roles” as storybook characters. The children were also joined by various mascots from our community, and the Houston Astros Shooting Stars even made an appearance. Typhoon Texas Water Park awarded the top three Cutest Characters a “Family of Four-All Day Pass” to the water park and each winner also received a trophy. New to the Cutest Character Parade this year was the Best Group Award which was given to the best cast of characters representing a single children’s storybook. After the exciting parade, the Seven Lakes High School Choir led the National Anthem for a packed house inside the library just before the much anticipated awards ceremony. Commissioner Meyers was enthusiastically joined by Texas State Senator Lois Kolkhorst, State Representatives Rick Miller and Dr. John Zerwas, Katy Mayor Fabol Hughes, Fulshear Mayor Tommy Kuykendall, Simonton Mayor Daniel McJunkin, Precinct 3 Justice of the Peace Ken Cannata and Constable Rob Cook, as well as Rebecca Fox from the Katy ISD Board of Trustees, who came to help present the many awards and prizes. The essay and art competitions have been heating up. This was the third year for the festival, and the biggest one yet, with well over 400 entries. Each of the six Best of Show winners in their respective categories were awarded a $1,000.00 check and a large trophy by Commissioner Meyers, through Fort Bend Charities; a 501(c) (3) charitable organization he established several years ago. Eighteen Judges Choice award- winners walked away with a summer camp scholarship to one of the following locations: Arts Fulshear, Faith West Academy, Katy Visual & Performing Arts Center, Move Dance & Fitness Studio, Showcase Gymnastics and Vortexic Martial Arts. All 24 of the top award-winning essay and art pieces will be on display at the Katy Contemporary Art Museum (KCAM) at 805 Avenue B in Katy through May 10th. Ask the Expert– Choosing a Funeral Home or Cemetery

Sherry Ahart-Davies Location Manager, Katy Funeral Home

Q: What should I look for when choosing a funeral home or cemetery? A: The funeral home or cemetery you choose help you design a meaningful memorial that truly celebrates the life it represents. Whether you are in need of immediate assistance or interested in learning more about preplanning options, look for these basic characteristics: • Qualied and caring professionals that

will take the time to listen, address your concerns and work within your budget. Offering various packages allows you to select arrangements at the right price and the best value.

• A funeral home or cemetery with a good reputation within your local and business community and with grounds, roads and buildings that are in good physical condition.

• A full-service provider that can pro-vide a range of funeral and cemetery options. From catering to cremation memorialization, look for a provider that will help you plan every detail of a personal, memorable tribute.

• A funeral home or cemetery that adheres to the law by providing you with a clear, itemized list of prices for merchandise and services offered and chosen.

Q: Do you have any other advice about making final arrangements? A: In my experience, it’s benecial to choose a funeral home or cemetery in advance. Making your arrangements before the time of need helps to ease emotional and nancial stress for your loved ones, and you can have true peace of mind in knowing your nal wishes have been followed. When you plan ahead, your funeral or cemetery provider can help you coordinate every detail of a personal, meaningful tribute. When you’re ready to get started, our funeral home offers a free Personal Planning Guide, a valuable planning tool with helpful information and a place where you can organize and record your nal wishes. You can contact us to receive your complimentary planning guide today. If you have more questions, visit your local funeral provider. They are a good source of information for funeral, cremation and cemetery options.

The Katy Prairie C o n s e r v a n c y ’ s (KPC) Katy Prairie Bash 2016 on May 11 at 7 p.m. honors former KPC board president and attorney Mary Van Kerrebrook for her passion and vision in working to conserve the Katy Prairie. This year’s theme is Naturally Yours: Saving Land for Future Generations.

In 1992, Van Kerrebrook had the foresight to realize that if the community did not

act quickly, the Katy Prairie—one of the last strongholds of contiguous coastal prairie in the region— would disappear forever. She and a group of concerned citizens founded the Katy Prairie Conservancy as a land trust dedicated to protecting as much land as possible. To date, the organization has protected more than 20,000 acres, making the Katy Prairie one of the largest conserved prairies in Texas.

“Mary Van Kerrebrook has been a tireless advocate for saving and restoring the Katy Prairie over many years and could not be a more deserving choice to be honored at our gala,” says Foster Carter, president of KPC’s board of directors. Her leadership with KPC, as well as with other state and national environmental organizations (including National Wildlife Federation) has been exemplary and visionary.”

Funds raised by Prairie Bash 2016 will help KPC protect more land, restore grasslands, and expand outdoor programming on the prairie. Now rooted in more than 20,000 acres of prairie, the Katy Prairie Conservancy employs best horticultural practices to restore tallgrass prairie and nurture native seeds to ensure that this local habitat can thrive. KPC also restores wetlands. Both the prairie and the wetlands provide much needed flood mitigation for the region.

Prairie Bash 2016 will be held at the Houston Country Club and starts at 7 p.m. Underwriting opportunities are available at $25,000 at the Stargazer level for a table of 10, down to the Dip Netter level at $1000 for two tickets. Individual tickets can be purchased at $250 per person and $150 for those under age 40. For more information or to buy tickets, visit www.katyprairie.org or call 713-523-6135.

The Katy Prairie Conservancy is a nonprofit land trust dedicated to preserving an ecologically vital tallgrass prairie and associated wetlands area on Houston's far west side for the enjoyment and benefit of all.

Katy Prairie Conservancy founder Mary Van Kerrebrook will be honored at the Katy Prairie Bash 2016 fund raiser on May 11.

These volun-teers helped OKE in various ways includ-ing organizing the annual Bonzer Bash, setting up hospitality events, coordinating homeroom parents, volunteering in areas including the front office, library, Eure-ka science, and step-ping up to help in any area needed. OKE Volunteers of the Year

Nominees for Volunteer of the year are Elisha Frost-Rivera, Kimberly Beidle, Jennifer Hoeferlin and Shona Begg.

Mom’s, you are such a role model and encourager to your kids. You pick them up when they are down, encourage them when they doubt their abilities, hug them when they need safety, and remind them that they can do anything they set their mind to. You give your kids the courage to achieve things even when they don’t believe in themselves. However, when it comes to believing in yourself, you are your harshest critic.

You believe in your kids and what they are capable of, constantly cheering them on and telling them how proud you are of them when they get to the end. When they do fail, you encourage them to get back up and try again. You know they will succeed

next time, if they will only try. You show them that their fears are simply figments of their imagination, and that they will never manifest like they imagine. However, when it comes to believing in yourself, you let your fears stop you.

This Mother’s Day, believe in yourself. Believe in the possible and the impossible. Know that you are capable of so much more and that you can be successful. You can finish writing that book, starting that business, completing that half marathon, and losing that baby weight from years ago. You know the impossible is possible for your kids, now it’s time to believe the same about yourself. This Mother’s Day, believe in yourself.

Have you ever wanted to break away from the hustle and bustle of the rat race – away from computers and the digital world -- but didn’t know how or where to begin? Find out how to escape to the great outdoors when Fort Bend County Libraries’ Cinco Ranch Branch Library presents “Outdoor Fun 101” on Saturday, May 28, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., in the Meeting Room of the library, located at 2620 Commercial Center Blvd in Katy.

Jennifer Boley, with NEO (Nature & Eclectic Outdoors), will provide an introduction to camping, including basics such as selecting a campsite and pitching a tent. Learn about safety measures and basic gear that is necessary for outdoor activities such as camping, hiking, and backpacking. Boley will also talk about basic native-wildlife information and identification, and how to protect one’s feet with proper footwear. Hear about nearby state parks and other places to go for day hikes or weekend camping trips.

Boley will provide tips on how to involve children in outdoor activities like hiking, camping, backpacking, and kayaking or canoeing. She will also talk about the health benefits of living a more outdoor-oriented lifestyle and the importance of spending quality time outdoors with friends and family.

“Nature immersion stimulates the mind and senses, reduces stress, focuses energy, and develops and maintains fine and gross motor skills, balance, and strength,” says Boley. “Everyone can benefit from spending more time outdoors.”

Boley is the founder and executive director of NEO, a Houston-based non-profit organization that is dedicated to helping people learn how to enjoy the outdoors and live a healthier, more active lifestyle. She is a Certified Project Wild & Growing Up Wild Instructor, as well as being

certified through the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD) as a Master Outdoor Leader, Volunteer Boating Instructor, and Volunteer Angling Instructor.

GREATER KATY AREAWe want to help and stand ready to serveWest I-10 VFD has been proud to serve the greater Katy area for more than 36 years, and we intend to continue this heritage of service.

West I-10 VFD stood ready to assist during our area’s flooding last month. We had our high water vehicles staffed and ready if ESD 48 or anyone else requested help. One of our units assisted Methodist West Houston in getting nurses to work through flooded routes south and north of I-10. Another of our high water vehicles, staffed by an assistant chief, assisted stranded motorists. Finally, we manned a third vehicle with crew on Monday night, April 18 in case ESD 48 requested mutual aid. ESD 48 made no such call.

Why does ESD 48 continue to play politics with public safety?

To learn more and get involved, visit www.westi-10fd.org

TO OUR NEIGHBORS IN THE

BackgroundESD 48 is attempting to seize assets that are legally owned by West I-10 VFD. ESD 48 compensated West I-10 VFD for fire suppression and EMS services through binding service agreements, and West I-10 VFD bought fire apparatus and other equipment to fulfill our duties under those agreements and protect the public.

On August 14, 2015, West I-10 VFD offered to continue services or enter into a mutual aid agreement with ESD 48, until the dispute between our organizations is resolved when it goes to trial this month. ESD 48 board president Marshall Kramer declined outright.
