ET Retail Hall of Fame Late Raghu Pillai
Most Trusted Retailerof the Year
Shoppers Stop Ltd.
As goes the long term saying, Romewasn’t built in day, it took years of
hardwork and toil of many people tocreate a marvel like that. Similar, is thecase for retail in India. Modern retailinghas been created by teams of highlyprofessional people working withintheir organisations. Retailing has beendriven by many individuals, often entre-preneurs who, with their out-of-the-box ideas and the sheer grit and deter-mination to make it big in the industry, carved the success story of India’sretail sector.
The ET Retail Hall of Fame is to hon-our such individuals. The award for ETRetail Hall of Fame this year was award-ed to an individual who was one of thekey founding fathers of Indian corpo-rate retail and had led teams which hadcreated almost every modern retail for-mat in India. He was the one person towhom the entire industry looked upto, not only for motivation but also, as amentor. He was the CEO of FutureValue Retail, part of the Future Group. As a member of the group executiveboard, he dreamt of and developed the20-20 vision for the group to achieve a$ 20 billion turnover. He was also hand-picked by Mukesh Ambani in 2006 tospearhead Reliance's retail foray. Oneof his most remembered quotes were,“Everyone in India really needs to work
hard so that the future generations canenjoy the country’s success.” With hisimmense foresight, he welcomed theopening of the Indian retail sector toforeign direct investment and recom-mended that the opening should hap-pen in phases.
At the very onset, he knew that theIndian retail sector was destined forbigger things, yet without being ambi-tious, he reasoned that the Indian retailindustry was still in a nascent stage andneeded to be nurtured. He wanted toobserve the gradual relaxation in FDIpolicies in phases, so that people grad-ually get attuned to the changed land-scape of retail in India.
He was a genius and had immenseknowledge, which he put to practicaluse. He was a graduate from IIMAhmedabad and Harvard BusinessSchool.
As an industry stalwart, a lot of suc-cessful and leading retail entrepreneurshave followed his footsteps and set uptheir empires here. Unfortunately, hepassed away at the age of 53 years, leaving behind a legacy that people tilldate, recognise him for.
With a standing ovation to this man,the ET Retail Hall of Fame was awardedposthumously to late Raghu Pillai andwas accepted on his behalf, by his wife,Janaki Pillai.
Janaki Pillai, receiving the award for ET Hall of Fame, awarded posthumously to lateRaghu Pillai, for his contribution to the retail industry from Manu Anand and B S Nagesh
