A s goes the long term saying, Rome wasn’t built in day, it took years of hardwork and toil of many people to create a marvel like that. Similar, is the case for retail in India. Modern retailing has been created by teams of highly professional people working within their organisations. Retailing has been driven by many individuals, often entre- preneurs who, with their out-of-the- box ideas and the sheer grit and deter- mination to make it big in the industry, carved the success story of India’s retail sector. The ET Retail Hall of Fame is to hon- our such individuals. The award for ET Retail Hall of Fame this year was award- ed to an individual who was one of the key founding fathers of Indian corpo- rate retail and had led teams which had created almost every modern retail for- mat in India. He was the one person to whom the entire industry looked upto, not only for motivation but also, as a mentor. He was the CEO of Future Value Retail, part of the Future Group. As a member of the group executive board, he dreamt of and developed the 20-20 vision for the group to achieve a $ 20 billion turnover. He was also hand- picked by Mukesh Ambani in 2006 to spearhead Reliance's retail foray. One of his most remembered quotes were, “Everyone in India really needs to work hard so that the future generations can enjoy the country’s success.” With his immense foresight, he welcomed the opening of the Indian retail sector to foreign direct investment and recom- mended that the opening should hap- pen in phases. At the very onset, he knew that the Indian retail sector was destined for bigger things, yet without being ambi- tious, he reasoned that the Indian retail industry was still in a nascent stage and needed to be nurtured. He wanted to observe the gradual relaxation in FDI policies in phases, so that people grad- ually get attuned to the changed land- scape of retail in India. He was a genius and had immense knowledge, which he put to practical use. He was a graduate from IIM Ahmedabad and Harvard Business School. As an industry stalwart, a lot of suc- cessful and leading retail entrepreneurs have followed his footsteps and set up their empires here. Unfortunately, he passed away at the age of 53 years, leaving behind a legacy that people till date, recognise him for. With a standing ovation to this man, the ET Retail Hall of Fame was awarded posthumously to late Raghu Pillai and was accepted on his behalf, by his wife, Janaki Pillai.
