in the fields of ophthalmology and optometry. To ensure accuracy

in preschool, school, well-child visit, and occupational health vision

screening activities, these tests must be standardized and properly

implemented.

Visual acuity can be measured using various tests that assess

specific aspects of vision. The basic test is the line test. A line

test has at least five optotypes (test symbols) on the test lines and

spaces between the optotypes that are equal to the width of the

optotypes of that line. The distance between the test lines is equal

to the height of the lower line.*

The LEA Test series includes line tests, crowded symbol tests, and

single symbol tests, which allow assessment of the visual system

across these three functional areas. Over the years, the number

of LEA Tests has increased to meet the various screening and

assessment needs of children and adults.

Even when tests are standardized, other variables may affect

results and may be difficult to control. Luminance level is one such

variable. When regular room illumination is used during screening

or testing, the luminance on the vertical test surface is lower than

the current federal recommendation of 85 candelas or more per

square meter.

Even when the testing situation and luminance level are

standardized, one important variable still resists standardization—

the tester. Each tester has his/her own interpersonal style that

affects communication, response waiting time, and emotional

support. Therefore, visual acuity values measured by two people,

well-trained and motivated to test in the same way, are likely

to vary. This variability must be considered when values from

distinct test series are compared. The child’s cultural background,

motivation, and intellectual ability will also affect test results.

Ideally, when different visual acuity tests are compared, measures

should be taken at least twice to adjust for variables that cannot be

controlled.

Back Hiding Heidi Low Contrast Face TestVisual communication is the most important

communication method during the first

year of life. The ability to detect objects of

low contrast is an important component

of the visual system. For example, facial

expressions are mediated by faint shadows

and changes in the contours of the mouth

and eyes. Determining the levels of contrast

that an infant can detect helps provide

baseline data for evaluating future changes.

For example, deviations from usual behavior

may indicate disorders that leave vision at

high-contrast levels unaffected.

Four cards printed on both sides in the

following contrast levels: black, 25%, 10%,

5%, 2.5%, and 1.25%. Cards are 9" x 9"

Heidi ExpressionsSome children with visual impairments

may achieve near normal results in routine

vision tests (large visual field and normal

interpret facial expressions or recognize

LEA PuzzleThe LEA Puzzle is designed for training and

assessing typically developing toddlers and

other young children. The puzzle also serves

as an assessment tool for individuals with

LEA Mailbox Used to assess visual perception of line

orientation. Tests two components:

1) information for the hand movements in

the parietal lobe and 2) picture perception

in the inferior temporal lobe. To observe the

first function, the child is asked to drop a

card through the slot of the LEA Mailbox.

The child should demonstrate perception

of the orientation of the slot by turning the

card to the correct position before moving

it half the distance to the slot (dorsal stream

function). A ventral stream function can be

observed through interactive play using

the LEA Mailbox. If a child cannot visually

perceive the orientations of lines, drawing

them may be difficult, and drawing angles

size perception. The Rectangles Game

Distance Fixation AnimalsWith animation, noise, and lights, these

practitioners to assess the central 30-

degree visual field when other methods are

impractical. It consists of a double-sided

card with a test grid on each side. Each test

grid displays a central stimulus surrounded

by a series of numbered fixation targets.

The patient looks at each numbered

fixation target in turn, so that the stimulus

moves through 30 relevant areas of the

visual field. While the patient gazes at a

selected target, the examiner dials a disc

so that a black-on-white stimulus briefly

appears in a central window on the test

card. The normal blind spot is used as a

control. An occluder for the eye is attached

to the side of the test card by a rigid arm

to ensure that the patient is at the correct

working distance. This test is fully portable

and does not require a power supply. The

“perimetry by numbers” technique makes

the examination relatively easy to learn and

administer. Includes recording forms.
