The Fiddler: Expanding Tradition | Cocktail Benefit Concert

First of all, if you’re looking at the words “Cocktail Benefit Concert” and wondering what this is, it’s the new name for the Caritas Concerts, now an established facet of our concert series. So if you loved the Caritas Concerts, rest assured that nothing has changed except the name. The music, food, wine, and fellowship are all still part of the

mix, and are first-rate!

For our first Cocktail Benefit Concert, this Friday, November 15th in Wallace Hall, we are thrilled to welcome from the recent Broadway revival of Fiddler on the Roof, the Fiddler herself! Kelly Hall-Tompkins, a 2017 New York Times New Yorker of the Year and performer in the upcoming Fiddler documentary Miracle of Miracles, brings you an entire evening of all new solo arrangements from the beloved musical. Developed by Kelly and in collaboration with the creative team from the Bartlett Sher production, arranger Oran Eldor and conductor/orchestrator Ted Sperling, this program waltzes from Klezmer to caprice to jazz ballad, celebrating the soul of the violin, the beloved musical, and the flavor of the recent Broadway production. Audiences in diverse venues around the world have enjoyed this groundbreaking program: from BBC radio live in London to Kiev, Ukraine; at the US Supreme Court, Lincoln Center, Feinstein’s 54 Below, Princeton

University, and Merkin Hall; with orchestras around the country; and on the show “In Your Face New York.”

In addition to continuing the Fiddler tradition, Kelly enjoys an extensive international career, having performed with major orchestras all over the world. In 2005, she founded social justice initiative Music Kitchen: Food for the Soul, bringing New York’s top emerging and established professional musicians together to share the inspirational, therapeutic, and uplifting power of music to New York City’s disenfranchised homeless shelter population. Of Music Kitchen, The New York Times has said: “Just three blocks from Lincoln Center, the concerts have an air of authenticity and directness that sometimes does not exist in concert halls.”

Kelly is married to percussionist Joe Tompkins, a long-time member of our musical family here at St. Ignatius, playing regularly in our concerts, as well as the Wallace Hall and Sunday 7:30PM Masses. You can read more about Kelly’s remarkable life and career at kellyhall-tompkins.com.

As always, 100% of the proceeds from the Cocktail Benefit Concerts go directly to organizations assisting the most vulnerable members of our society. The beneficiary for this concert is Brooklyn Jesuit Prep, a Catholic Jesuit middle school serving low-income families of diverse races, ethnicities and faiths in the Crown Heights

neighborhood of Brooklyn. Their mission is to develop young leaders who are intellectually competent, open to growth, loving, religious and committed to doing justice. They achieve this goal through a rigorous academic program during an extended school day, a residential summer leadership camp and a graduate support program offering academic and tuition support through high school. In this way, they break the cycle of poverty through education and further the Jesuit tradition of molding men and women for others. Additional information may be found at brooklynjesuit.org.

We are excited about Friday’s concert, and look forward to seeing you here. Please visit ignatius.nyc/concerts to find out more about the rich offerings of this, our 31st season!

Following the 11 AM Mass. Parish Lounge.

Dear Parishioners,

Last Spring I invited a cross-section of parishioners to assist me with the task of drafting a statement that captured the essential characteristics of the parish and identified what our shared aspirations are as a Jesuit parish community. Our meetings included both discussions and prayer. I believe these sessions were moments of grace as each of us grew in appreciation of how much this parish means to us personally and how effective we have been in creating a purposeful community of active parishioners. Each participant in his or her own way recognized the importance of taking ownership of the parish and its ministries so that together we might serve the Church as joyful disciples of Jesus Christ.

The insert in this weekend’s bulletin states the parish’s Mission Statement in a very succinct sentence. It reads as follows: The love of Christ impels us to welcome all, to worship joyfully and pray fervently, to walk together with those in need, and to reverence God in the wonder of Creation. What follows the statement is a brief narrative of how each element of the Mission Statement is understood.

In publishing this Mission Statement it is my hope that we pause to reflect on who we are in this moment of time, what binds us together as a community of faith, and how we might work together to serve the Church in ways that bring glory to God. In one sense, the Mission Statement is a celebration of who we are and who we aspire to be as we proclaim our belief in Jesus Christ by the manner of our living.

My final word is one of gratitude to the members of the ad hoc group who helped to fashion the parish’s Mission Statement. Their dedication to the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola continues to be a source of inspiration to me. Their efforts were unquestionably motivated by their love for the parish and their hopes for its future.

Sincerely in the Lord,

Fr. Yesalonia
