Jesuit Since 1866Established in 1851

The renowned psychiatrist Karl Stern, in the introduction to The Pillar of Fire, his conversion story to Catholicism wrote, “That one simple question, whether Jesus of Nazareth was God incarnate, becomes increasingly decisive between people, as history moves forward.” I reflected on Stern’s question and its importance when I began an eleven-year assignment at St.

Ignatius Parish in 1986.

With the many difficult questions, hotly contested issues, and disparate, clashing convictions in contemporary society, that question—whether Jesus of Nazareth was God—remains paramount.

Answering Stern’s question in the affirmative gives us confidence and shapes our response to God, our responsibility to each other and to the larger society. Our confidence comes from the realization of God’s love for us and for all people that is revealed in Jesus who shares our humanity and who remains present to us in the great sacramental signs. Our responsibility stems from the necessity to witness to how the teaching and example of Jesus shape our lives.

Now I return to St. Ignatius after serving the people at St. Patrick Cathedral (perhaps the most remarkably diverse congregation I have had the privilege to serve) and giving spiritual direction to

clergy during these past seven years. Before that I worked at Fordham University Lincoln Center Campus Ministry for thirteen years. There I worked with a wonderful team, headed by Joan Cavanagh, Ph.D., I taught Faith and Critical Reason, did spiritual direction and participated in retreats for students, faculty, and staff—all with a variety of perspectives on life and meaning. To this day I value all the experiences I have had and the places I have visited, and I treasure

the people I have met and what they have taught me of Jesus, the Christ. I am especially happy to be returning to St. Ignatius and to be seeking Jesus among you and speaking of Him with you.

I first came to St. Ignatius Parish thirty years ago, after serving the Lakota in Western South Dakota. I came to this parish still holding memories of Jimmy Good Shield, stabbed to death the first weekend I was on the Rosebud Reservation, of Victor Bull Bear who gave me my

native name and the Jesuit team with whom I worked to construct the Sioux Spiritual Center. I also held memories of the Marshall Islands where I served and the indispensable voice of dear

Sr. Dorothy Nook, my translator, and of Napthali who had lost an arm to a shark and a son to sickness. I served at Nativity Church on the Lower East Side with the memory of the wake of a

little girl with the same name as my niece Alexandra and of team teaching the First Communion class with Sr. Bertha Fox, the aunt of the president of Mexico. While there I was deeply affected by the radical witness of the people at the Catholic Worker. After Nativity I taught 8th grade boys English at McQuade Jesuit High School in Rochester where I had them memorize large amounts of the poetry I liked!

To know one’s mission is a great grace. The apostle Paul was clear about his mission. It was to do all he could do to bring people to Christ, to preach Christ Jesus as Lord, and himself

as a servant for Jesus’ sake (1 Corinthians 4:5). In the spirit of Paul, Ignatius Loyola knew to what he was called and gave the name “Society of Jesus” to his first companions. Jesus was to be their identity and mission. Like Paul, Ignatius and his first companions, may we continue to grow in the Christ centered mission to which we are called—to serve Jesus in all those we meet. Together let us ask ourselves in the words of Ignatius, “What have I done for Christ? What am I doing for Christ? What will I do for Christ?" I look forward to being part of the Ignatian mission with you.

Your Parish, Your Home

Campaign for the

Church of St. Ignatius Loyola

At the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola, we warmly welcome those who seek to be a part of a vibrant worshipping community, to grow in faith, to be

nurtured in mind and spirit, and to be joyful disciples of Jesus Christ in today’s world.

We are always open to where God is calling us. But our magnificent church buildings don’t reflect

the welcome we extend to everyone.

You can help change that by making a gift to this important capital campaign.

We have the privilege at St. Ignatius of welcoming many visitors and new parishioners. We especially

welcome those who may be thinking of becoming Catholic. If you feel attracted to

the Catholic faith, we want you to know about a program at the Parish that will begin in the Fall.

A group will meet during the year to inquire into the Catholic faith, to come to know Jesus through the

Gospels, and to pray and to prepare for the Easter Sacraments.

This process, which is called the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, is also open to those Catholic

adults who have not received the Sacraments of First Communion or Confirmation.

For more information, contact Maureen Fullam at 212-288-3588 or email [email protected].
