Setse beach attracting attention of more touristsArticle: Maung Maung Htwe (MNA); Photos: Hla Moe (MNA)

On the tour of Mon State, we also dropped inSetse beach in Thanbyuzayat.

Our country is also known as Golden Land ofMyanmar due to a good number of beach resorts withnatural beauty. Of them, Ngapali, Chaungtha,Ngwehsaung, Maungmagan and Setse establish areputation among tourists at home and abroad.

Being journalists, we have been to such beachesas Ngapali, Chaungtha and Ngwehsaung several times. The beach resorts in our country have their specificcharacters; some are serene and some are picturesque.Setse beach resort can be compared to a charmingdamsel.

Setse beach is 10 miles west of Thanbyuzayat, 50miles from Mawlamyine and 237 miles from Yangon. The sandy beach stretches out two miles from east towest. Despite being part of Mottama Gulf, Setsebeach has never seen any attacks of large sea animals. It has 21 department-owned guest houses.

Now, plans are well under way to grace Setsebeach in order that its standard will be on a par withthat of its counterparts that tourists can visit forrelaxation.

The process consists of 10 programmes: to spruceup and make the beach pleasant and green; to arrangethe lodging houses and buildings in a well-organizedway; to nurture the trees in the compounds and onboth sides of the main road along the beach; toupgrade shops, restaurants and photo studios; tosupply adequate safe water; to keep public lavatoriesclean and tidy; to supply sufficient power supply; toensure smooth transport along the beach; to take

the interest and develop the region. When the projectis over, tourists may take a car trip to enjoy naturalbeauty and pleasant splashes of the waves along thebeach.

Apart from the ongoing projects, a long-term planwill come into force to transform Kyetthon Island, seven miles from Setse beach, into a pleasant and

unity and in harmony from time immemorial andwhich is blessed with various forms of naturalresources in abundance such as gold, silver, preciousstones along with fertile soil. Therefore, it is nowonder Myanmar is called Golden Land.

Thanks to the ongoing projects beingimplemented under the long view, Setse beach isexpected to catch up with other famous beach resortssoon.

SCIENCEDAILY, 4 Feb — Picturethis: an accurate map of a largeunderground oil reservoir that can guide

Improving oil extraction with new mapping technology engineers' efforts to coax the oil fromthe vast rocky subsurface into wellswhere it can be pumped out for storageor transport.

Researchers in MIT's Departmentof Civil and Environmental Engineeringhave developed technology that cangenerate such a map, which has thepotential to significantly increase theamount of oil extracted from reservoirs.

The new technology uses the digitalimage compression technique of JPEGto create realistic-looking,comprehensive maps of undergroundoil reservoirs using measurements fromscattered oil wells. These maps wouldbe the first to provide enough detailabout an oil reservoir to guide oilrecovery in the field in real time.

CARDIFF, 4 Feb —Cardiff University re-searchers, who are part ofa British-German teamsearching the depths ofspace to study gravita-tional waves, may havestumbled on one of themost important discover-ies in physics, accordingto an American physicist.

Centre for ParticleAstrophysics in Illinois isconvinced that he hasfound proof in the data ofthe gravitational wave de-tector GEO600 of a holo-graphic Universe – andthat his ideas could ex-

Holographic Universeplain mysterious noise inthe detector data that hasnot been explained so far.

The British-Germanteam behind the GEO600,which includes scientistsfrom the School of Phys-ics and Astronomy'sGravitational PhysicsGroup, will now carry outnew experiments in thecoming months to yieldmore evidence aboutCraig Hogan's assump-tions. If proved correct, itcould help in the quest tobring together quantummechanics and Einstein'stheory of gravity.

In order to test thetheory of holographicnoise, the frequency ofGEO600´s maximumsensitivity will be shiftedtowards ever higher fre-quencies. The frequencyof maximum sensitivityis the tone that the detec-tor can hear best. It isnormally adjusted to of-fer the best chance forhearing exploding starsor merging black holes.

Even if it turns outthat the mysterious noiseis the same at high fre-quencies as at the lowerones, this will not consti-tute proof for Hogan's hy-pothesis. It would, how-ever, provide a strong mo-tivation for further study. The sensitivity ofGEO600 will then be sig-nificantly improved byusing 'squeezed vacuum'and by the installation of amode filter in a newvacuum chamber. Thetechnology of 'squeezedvacuum' was particularlyrefined in Hannover andwould be used in a gravi-tational wave detector forthe first time.—InternetView through one of the tubes of GEO600.

Syria says US must lift sanctionsto renew ties

WASHINGTON, 4 Feb—The UnitedStates must lift its sanctions on Syria ifPresident Barack Obama wants tonormalise fractured ties, a senior Syrianofficial said on Tuesday. In principle, tohave normal relations between Syria andthe United States, sanctions should belifted. This is going to be a very importantpart of any dialogue between Syria and theUnited States,” Abdullah al-Dardari,Syria’s deputy prime minister for economicaffairs, told Reuters in an interview.

It was the first time Syrian authoritieshave publicly linked rapprochement withthe Obama administration to a lifting ofsanctions, which have taken their toll onthe country’s economy and contributed toyears of international isolation.

In general, we hope to see a differentpolicy in Washington because the previouspolicy failed completely and Mr. Obamahas been promising change,” Dardari said.

The deputy prime minister, who isSyria’s point man on major projects, saidthe impact of sanctions had been limitedwith foreign direct investment stillincreasing by some 30 percent a year, buthe said they had been a psychologicaldeterrent for some foreign investors.Dardari said Syria was feeling the strain ofthe global economic downturn, even if theimpact on its nascent banking sector hadbeen limited, and was eager to attract moreforeign investment — particularly from itsmain trading partners in Europe and otherArab states.—Internet

Chemicals used todisrupt cancer

DALLAS, 4 Feb — US medical scientists have iden-tified two chemical compounds that can possibly dis-rupt the growth of many types of cancer and degen-erative diseases.

University of Texas Southwestern Medical Centerresearchers screened a chemical library of 200,000compounds to find the chemicals that can be used tostudy and possibly manipulate cellular pathways.

“The identification of these chemicals and their tar-gets within this cellular pathway represents an impor-tant step in developing therapeutic agents,” said As-sistant Professor Lawrence Lum.

Using cultured mouse cells, the researchers studiedbiochemical reactions within cells controlled by a classof proteins called Wnt that help control embryonicdevelopment in many animals, including humans.Misregulation of cellular responses to Wnt proteins isassociated with a broad range of diseases, includingcancer, Alzheimer’s and polycystic kidney disease, andtype 2 diabetes, the scientists said.—Internet Nanotubes used to spur bone growth

Professor Jeffrey Morgan, who led theresearch, said it has enormous implica-tions for basic cell biology, drug discov-ery and tissue research. He said the tis-sues created in the lab are more like natu-ral tissue and can be constructed to havecomplex lace-like patterns similar to avasculature — the arrangement of bloodvessels in the body or in an organ.

Women who have higherlevels of a hormone pro-duced by the placentamidway through theirpregnancy appear morelikely to develop postpar-tum depression, accordingto a report in the Febru-ary issue of Archives ofGeneral Psychiatry.

Postpartum depres-sion (PPD) is more seri-ous than “baby blues”and begins within four to

WASHINGTON, 4 Feb —A team of researchers atAustralia’s Monash Uni-versity has made a majorbreakthrough in the inter-national fight againstmalaria, which claims thelife of a child across theworld every 30 seconds, according to a report pub-lished on Tuesday in theUS Proceedings of theNational Academy of Sci-ences.

The team, based at theMonash University ARCCenter of Excellence inStructural and FunctionalMicrobial Genomics, has

been able to deactivate thefinal stage of the malariaparasite’s digestive ma-chinery, effectively starv-ing the parasite of nutri-ents and disabling its sur-vival mechanism.

This process of starva-tion leads to the death ofthe parasite, which is con-tracted by half a billionpeople and causes around1 million deaths a year.

Leading ProfessorJames Whisstock saidthe results had laid thescientific groundwork tofurther develop a specificclass of drugs to treat

PARIS, 4 Feb—The smallest planet yetfound outside the Solar System has been detected by aFrench space telescope.

The rocky world is less than twice the size ofEarth.

Only a handful of planets have so far been foundwith a mass comparable to Earth, Venus, Mars orMercury.

The discovery was made by Corot, an orbitingobservatory with a 27cm-diameter telescope to searchfor planets orbiting other stars.

About 330 of these “exoplanets” have beendiscovered so far. But most of them have been gasgiants similar to Jupiter or Neptune.

The new find, Corot-Exo-7b, orbits its Sun-likestar once every 20 hours.

Because the planet is so close to its parent star, itstemperature is between 1,000 and 1,500C - far too hotto support life.

The vast majority of exoplanets have beendiscovered using the radial velocity method.

This looks for spectral signs that a star is wobblingdue to gravitational tugs from an orbiting planet.

But the method favours the detection of largeplanets orbiting close to its parent star.—Internet

BEWARE OF FIRE

The transport sector plays an im-portant role in undertaking the develop-ment of country. Among the inland, avia-tion and waterway transport sectors, thewaterway transport is vital for the smoothflow of commodities. The waterwaytransport includes inland water and over-seas services. Actually, the Myanma FiveStar Line that transports export and im-port commodities is contributing to thedevelopment of the nation.

The Myanma Five Star Line wasestablished in 1959 and it launched thetransport service with the use of rentedvessel. At present, the organization isrunning its functions with 16 cargo ves-sels and nine coastal liners, totalling 25in carrying out the local and foreigntransport services.

high that it is possibly covered in lava or watervapour.

About 330 exoplanets have been discovered sofar, most of which are gas giants with characteristicssimilar to Jupiter and Neptune. The new find, COROT-Exo-7b, is different: its diam-eter is less than twice that of Earth and it orbits its staronce every 20 hours. It is located very close to itsparent star, and has a high temperature, between 1000and 1500°C. Astronomers detected the new planet asit transited its parent star, dimming the light from thestar as it passed in front of it.

The density of the planet is still under investi-gation: it may be rocky like Earth and covered inliquid lava. It may also belong to a class of planetsthat are thought to be made up of water and rock inalmost equal amounts. Given the high temperaturesmeasured, the planet would be a very hot and humidplace.—Internet

today’s electric hybrids and almost just as economi-cal.

The Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyotahas built a car, the “Prius”, which is seen as a conceptfor the future. It uses an electric hybrid engine to savefuel while still offering the usual drivability stand-ards. However, this vehicle has a serious disadvan-tage. It is expensive and is unaffordable especially forconsumers in up-and-coming countries such as Chinaand India that are increasing rapidly their mobilitydemands. In addition, the battery needed by the elec-tric hybrid as an energy storage device is heavy andexpensive. Last but not least, the technology in thecoupling between the gasoline engine and the electricdrive is very complicated.Simpler and cheaper

This is why Lino Guzzella, Professor ofThermotronics, does not think the electric hybrid isthe only solution.—Internet
