US war costs up in 2007WASHINGTON, 24 Jan— The US Government budget

on Iraq and Afghanistan wars as well as other anti-terror operations increased significantly in 2007, saida congressional report released on Wednesday.

According to the report by the non-partisanCongressional Budget Office (CBO), war funding ofPresidential George W Bush’s Administration hasremained at 93 billion US dollars on average from2003 through 2005 but increased to 120 billion dollarsin 2006 and 171 billion dollars in 2007.

In a pending budget bill for the fiscal year 2008,Bush also asked for a war fund of about 193 billiondollars. “It keeps going up, up and away,” SenateBudget Committee Chairman Kent Conrad said.

Since the 11 September, 2001, attacks on the UnitedStates, Congress has allocated about 691 billion dollarsto fund the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan as well assome related activities including reconstruction, thereport said. Of the total, 440 billion dollars were spenton fighting in Iraq.

Currently, there are around 158,000 US troops inIraq and 27,000 in Afghanistan.

Without raising taxes to address the climbing pricepaid to anti-terror wars, the US Government wasfinancially dragged by rising debts.

As CBO estimated, the interest payment thegovernment has to pay on its debts this year wouldreach about 234 billion dollars.

Despite congressional Democrats’ effort to changeBush Administration's war policy by checking thefund, Congress is expected to pass another round ofmoney for the war in May or June. — MNA/Xinhua

In a second preliminary report, investigatorssaid they were still trying to work out what caused thelack of thrust during the flight's final moments.

"The engines both initially responded but afterabout three seconds the thrust of the right enginereduced," the report said. "Some eight seconds laterthe thrust reduced on the left engine to a similar level.

"The engines did not shut down and both enginescontinued to produce thrust at an engine speed aboveflight idle, but less than the commanded thrust."

BOSTON, 25 Jan — Injecting bloodor bone marrow cells into people whohave just received a donated kidneycan reduce the need for drugs thatsuppress the immune system, researchers reported on Wednesday.

The stem cells in the blood andbone marrow helped trick the body intotolerating the transplants, two teams ofresearchers reported in the NewEngland Journal of Medicine.

In one series of experiments, researchers at Massachusetts GeneralHospital and Harvard Medical School

in Boston tested the technique on fivevolunteers who received a kidney froma relative. Four were eventuallyweaned off their anti-suppressiondrugs.

“While we need to study thisapproach in a larger group of patientsbefore it is ready for broad clinicaluse, this is the first time that toleranceto a series of mismatched transplantshas been intentionally and successfullyinduced,” said Dr David Sachs, whohelped lead the study.

Ahmadinejad to makelandmark visit to Iraq

BAGHDAD, 25 Jan—President MahmoudAhmadinejad has acceptedan invitation to visitBaghdad, Iraq’s ForeignMinistry said onWednesday, a landmarktrip that would make himthe first leader of Iran tovisit its former foe.

Iran and Iraq foughtan eight-year war in the1980s in which hundredsof thousands were killed, but relations haveimproved since SaddamHussein was ousted in theUS-led invasion of Iraq in2003 and a Shiite Islamist-led government came topower.

“President Ah-madinejad has accepted aninvitation from President(Jalal) Talabani to come toIraq,” Iraqi deputy ForeignMinister Labeed Abawitold Reuters.

An aide toAhmadinejad, who askednot to be identified, said:“We have heard about itbut no date has been

scheduled.” Both Talabani and

Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki have visited ShiiteIran, which some MiddleEast analysts say exertsgreater influence in Iraqthan the United States.

Ahmadinejad hasaccepted the invitation at atime of heightened tensionbetween Iran and the UnitedStates, which said itswarships were threatenedby Iranian craft in the Straitof Hormuz earlier thismonth.

The two countries arealso at odds over Teheran’snuclear programme andwhat Washington callsIran’s “negative influence”in Iraq through its armingand training of Shiitemilitias. Iran denies this andsays it is committed topeace in Iraq.
