NASA: No risk of ‘killer’ solar flaresGREENBELT, 12 Nov—

Worries that a killer solarflare could strike Earthin 2012 are unfounded, even as solar activityramps up in its usual 11-year cycle, NASAscientists say.

Although great burstsof electromagnetic energyand particles can some-

times stream from thesun — creating disrupti-ons with signal tran-smission from GPSsatellites and evenpotentially inducingelectric fluctuations atground level that couldblow out transformers inpower grids — solar flaresfrom the sun are not

physically capable ofdestroying Earth, a NASArelease said Thursday.

There simply isn’tenough energy in the sunto send a killer fireball 93million miles to destroyEarth, NASA heliophy-sicist Alex Young said.

Solar flares are aproblem the same wayhurricanes are a problem,he said, meaning advanceinformation can allowproper precautions.

Scientists at NASAand the NationalOceanographic andAtmospheric Adminis-tration can give warningsto electric companies, spacecraft operators, andother concerned entitieswhen the most intenseforms of space weatherare on their way, Youngsaid.

Improving thesepredictive abilities is oneof the reasons NASAstudies the sun and spaceweather, he said.

Fossil is record of ancient shark attackWASHINGTON, 12 Nov—An ancient

shark attack has been preserved in theform of a fossilized whale bone bearingmarks of the assault, US paleontologistssay. Scientists with the SmithsonianInstitution say the fragment of whalerib found in a North Carolina stripmine offers a rare look at the interactionsbetween prehistoric sharks and whalesduring the Pliocene Epoch 3 million to4 million years ago.

Three tooth marks on the ribsuggest the whale was once severelybitten by a strong-jawed animal, andthe wide spacing between tooth marksmakes scientists believe the attackerwas a mega-toothed sharkCarcharocles megalodon, aSmithsonian release said Friday.Scientists know the whale survivedthat attack because “most of the fossilfragment is covered with a type ofbone known as woven bone, which

forms rapidly in response to localizedinfection,” Don Ortner of theSmithsonian’s National Museum ofNatural History said. Based on thetooth marks, scientists said they believethe shark was relatively small, between13 and 26 feet long.

“One certainly doesn’t expect tofind evidence of animal behaviorpreserved in the fossil record, but thisfossil shows just that, a failedpredation,” said Stephen Godfrey, paleontologist at the Calvert MarineMuseum in Solomons, Md, and aSmithsonian research collaboratorwho discovered the fossil. “The sharkmay have gone away with a mouthful, but it didn’t kill the whale. “This fossilis one of a very few examples thatshows a trauma clearly attributed toanother animal, yet also shows thevictim survived the event.”—Internet

High-fibre diet cuts bowel cancer riskLONDON, 12 Nov—

Eating enough fibre cancut bowel cancer risk byalmost 20 percent.

Although a high-fibre diet has beenknown to be good forthe gut and protectiveagainst bowel cancer, theImperial College Londonstudy is the first toquantify the benefit.

The analysis of 25studies, involving almosttwo million participants, found for every 10-gramincrease in total dietaryfibre, the risk of bowelcancer dropped by 10

percent, the Britishmedical journal reports.

Experts recommendthat adults should eatbetween 18 and 24grams of fibres a day,but the average intake inBritain is only about 15grams, according to theTelegraph.

The researchers, from Imperial CollegeLondon and the DanishCancer Society, conclud-ed that “a high intake ofdietary fibre, particularlyfrom cereal and wholegrains, is associated witha reduced risk of

colorectal cancer”.Whole grain foods

include brown andwholemeal breads, cereals, oatmeal, brownrice and porridge.

Most foods onlycontain a little fibre sogetting enough can bedifficult. Muesli, forinstance, only containsabout three grams per50 gram serving. Bowelcancer kills about16,000 people in Britainalone a year, more thanbreast or prostatecancer.

More bachelor girls than boysin Shanghai

BEIJING, 12 Nov —At atime when the number ofmale bachelors in the 30-44 age group is shrinkingin Shanghai, that of singlewomen in the same agedemographic seems to beon the rise, said a surveyfrom Shanghai Bureau ofStatistics.

A comparison wasmade between the male-female ratio of older sin-

gles (defined as those agedbetween 30 and 44) be-tween 2000 and 2010.

The number of olderunmarried men droppedby 2.2 percent in 10 years, while that of older unmar-ried women increased by3.4 percent from 2000 to2010. The survey wasbased on data collectedfrom the sixth nationalcensus.

A matchmaking partycoming up on 12 and 13Nov, would illustrate thatvisually. A greaternumber of single womenwill be vying for the at-tention of a relatively lessnumber of eligible bach-elors, according to theorganizer.

Myanmar National Human Rights CommissionMyanmar National Human Rights Commissionsends open letter to Presidentsends open letter to President

NAY PYI TAW, 12 Nov—Myanmar NationalHuman Rights Commission sent an open letterdated 12, November 2011 to U Thein Sein, Presidentof the Republic of the Union of Myanmar today.

The full text of the open letter is as follows:Mr President1. Myanmar National Human Rights Commission

had in an open letter dated 10, October, 2011submitted an appeal for the release of prisonersby granting amnesty to them. In our submission,Myanmar National Human Rights Commissionhumbly requested the President, as a reflectionof his magnanimity to grant amnesty to thoseprisoners, convicted for breach of existing laws, who do not pose a threat to the stability of theState and public tranquility, in the interests ofnational races to enable them to participate inwhatever way they can in the nation-buildingtasks.

2. The Commission is greatly heartened thatthe President on 11 October, 2011 grantedamnesty to 6359 prisoners.

3. The fact that the Myanmar National HumanRights Commission had made a submission foramnestying the prisoners and that theGovernment had granted the amnesty receivedwidespread support and welcome both

domestically and internationally. It has, in ouropinion, generated greater interest in andrecognition of the Myanmar National HumanRights Commission.

4. The Commission is cognizant of the fact andappreciates the position of the government thatalthough among the prisoners there are thosewho had engaged in political activities, they arein prison for contravening existing laws. At thesame time, there had been assertion by theSecretary-General of the United Nations and anumber of countries that there were nearly 2000of what is referred to as “Prisoners ofConscience”. It has also been asserted that outof 6359 prisoners released, there wereapproximately 200 prisoners in the said category.

5. In this regard, Myanmar National HumanRights Commission had made enquiries withthe relevant ministries. The result of theenquiries is that the relevant ministries hadasked for the list from some westerngovernments and other sources and uponchecking, it was learnt that of the nearly 2000prisoners on the list, only some 500 wereactually in prison. We are therefore heartenedthat out of the approximately 500 on that list, some 200 were released under the amnesty.

6. The release of the remaining prisoners, includingthose cited above convicted for breach ofexisting laws who do not pose a threat to thestability of State and public tranquility, in theinterest of national races, will not only enablethem to participate in whatever way they can inthe nation-building tasks but also will in a wayhelp promote national unity.

7. Accordingly, the Myanmar National HumanRights Commission again humbly requests thePresident as a reflection of his magnanimity toinclude those prisoners when a subsequentamnesty is granted.

8. If for reasons of maintaining peace and stability, certain prisoners cannot as yet be included in theamnesty, the Commission would like torespectfully submit that consideration be madefor transferring them to prisons with easy accessfor their family members.

Respectfully,Win MraChairman
