She started by coming to teach some classes, but over time her role has been transformed and morphed in many ways. I am very thankful to God for bringing her to us and for all the ways she has helped and encouraged me in my work. Events in her life are now leading to a different role for her with us. I want to let her tell you her news. Rick signed a contract last week to serve for 18 months as Interim Headmaster of his alma mater, the University School in Cleveland, a K-12 boys school. He begins after Thanks- giving. I will join him after Christmas. Although this change feels too soon and too hasty, I trust the Holy Spirit must be in it because there is so much good. First, it is a wonderful opportunity for Rick. They are so eager for his leadership that they are making the move as easy as can be. Our grandson had begun his application for 5 th grade, so we expect that he and Rick will be going to school together. I am so grateful to be closer to my parents during this season of their life. KC and her family are eager for our support and home cooked meals as she seeks to maintain her health. And, Ginny is as independent, happy and healthy as we have seen her in years, thanks in part to your care and prayers. So the time feels right, except….. This last decade, and especially the last 5 years with you has been a privilege and delight. I am so thankful to Greg for his mentoring, coaching and friendship. I am grateful for the staff whose gifts and commitment are truly special. You, dear friends, have shown me what faithful, joyful discipleship looks like. It was a special privilege to be your worship leader through Greg’s Clergy Renewal, and I thank you for your encouragement and support. Most of all, you have been our family’s prayer warriors and community. The ministry you and I have shared has been more meaningful than you may ever know. It is hard to take this next step. So I give thanks this is not good-bye, but a new season. Together we will see what God has in store for us. I will hold you in my prayers and heart and eagerly look forward to our time togeth- er over the next months. Dear Friends,

During the last ten years Judith Brown Bryan has served our congregation in a variety of ways.

He begins after Thanks-giving. I will join him after Christmas. Although this change feels too soon and too hasty, I trust the Holy Spirit must be in it because there is so much good.

First, it is a wonderful opportunity for Rick. They are so eager for his leadership that they are making the move as easy as can be. During Advent we will focus on the theme “The Senses of Christmas.” On January 1 we will hold our annual White Gifts collection and receive an individual word to ponder for the New Year. On the Baptism of the Lord Sunday we renew our own Baptism. On the last Sunday of January we have our annual Service of Light. In the season before the beginning of Lent we focus on different aspects of love. December 4 The Taste of Christmas Rev. Hall Philippians 2:7-8 December 11 The Sounds of Christmas: Music Sunday Rev. This Advent, beginning November 29, we are trying something new! In the Narthex you will find a Prayer Center for personal devotions during the week. Not on-ly will you find the two leather chairs, you will also see

a prie-dieu that has been housed upstairs. This piece of furniture allows you to kneel for your devotions if you choose. On its shelf is a guide for daily prayer from the Northumbria Community in England. The prie-dieu will be situated under the icon that David Barnas painted for us. Icons invite our gaze and contemplation.

You may recall that David’s icon is modeled after The Holy Trinity by Andrei Rublev. The three figures are both the angels that Abraham entertained as well as the Holy Trinity. Notice the harmony among them as they commune silently. If you soften your gaze, you can see the shape of a chalice in the negative space between the figures. And then you will want to be aware that the open space in front of the table is for us. We are wel-come to enter this circle of perfect unity, hospitality and love as we pray.

We hope that you will find this sacred space to be inviting and meaningful to your spiritual life as we await the coming of our Savior.

Christmas Angel Project offers our church family the opportunity to give to someone

who might not otherwise receive. Help put some real joy and meaning to the message of the Christian “Christ”mas by taking a numbered angel from the display table in the hall outside the sanctuary. Each angel represents an individual or family from our own Clarence Community Food Pantry and has some information about the person (age, sex, sizes, needs) and their as-

signed identification number. That number is the only link between you and that special person. It is very important that the number be attached securely to your wrapped gift(s) when you bring them to church on December 11. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call or text Jim Owen @ 310-5447.

Holiday Fruit Baskets—It's time again to prepare Christmas fruit baskets for the fami-

lies served by the Clarence Community Pantry. You can participate by contributing any of the following: baskets, including large ones for the larger families the pantry serves; fruit (bananas and pears must be green) or give money to buy fruit by the case; filler items such as beverage packets, wrapped candy, small crackers, etc. A basket for your contributions will be placed in the Narthex near the nametags or bring your items to the office during the week.

Please bring your contributions by Sunday, December 11. We welcome everyone to join us to help assemble the baskets on Tuesday, December 13, at 10 am in the Bodine Room. We have some great conversation and it is a good feeling to participate in this project, so please join us!

Special Christmas Music Sunday, December 11 at 10 am Worship

The Chancel Choir with guest singers will lead a service of readings and carols by singing John Rutter’s entire book of “O Holy Night”, thirteen sacred carols and Christmas hymns. (Note: no 8:30 am worship on this day.)

We always welcome new members to the choir. Please contact Koto if you are interested in joining us in music making at church! ([email protected])

Service for Healing and Wholeness, Sunday, December 11 at 11:30 am in

the Sanctuary following the 10 am service—In this season of Advent we remember those for whom the holidays are not joyful. The service is brief, offering prayer, music and the laying on of hands, and anointing for ourselves and on behalf of others – those who are ill, grieving, lonely. You are cordially encouraged to attend and to invite anyone who would welcome healing prayers.

Christmas Pageant Sunday, December 18, 10 am Service—All young people of the

church (K-12 grades) are invited to participate in the Christmas Pageant—Sing a Song of Christmas. The full dress rehearsal for all will be on Saturday, December 17, from 10 am to 12 pm. (Note: no 8:30 am worship on this day.)

Epiphany Sunday White Gift Celebration, January 1, 10:00 Service— It is our tradition to join the three kings in bringing gifts to Jesus. Remembering the need in our community and Jesus’ care for the poor, we offer White Gifts to serve the Food Pantry which may be left in the Narthex in the white box. We especially welcome: Kleenex, toilet tissue, soap, paper towels, napkins and any monetary donation in a white envelope!

Special Celebration of Baptism, January 8 at Both Services— This special service will celebrate the meaning of the Sacrament of Baptism and afford each person the opportunity to renew and reclaim their Baptism. Don’t miss this special op-portunity!

Service of Light, January 29 at 5:00 pm—On this Sunday, there

will be only one brief morning worship service at 8:30 am and no Sunday School; the Service of Light is at 5 pm. This will be a very special candlelight service with an all church dinner following worship. Bring the family!

On Sundays...

K-6th Graders—We continue to follow our model of teaching the same lesson each Sun-

day for a month, but presented in four to five different formats depending on the number of Sundays in the month. Presentations can be in Tales of the Script (acting), David’s Palace Theatre (movie), Our Acts Café (kitchen), Creation Station (art), and PC Oasis (computer). Click here to see our Heroes Alley During the 10:00 am worship service, children Pre-K—6th grade are excused from the sanctu-ary after the Children’s sermon to go to their Sunday School classrooms. All children remain in Sunday School until 11:30 am. To minimize disruptions, please adhere to this schedule. The

themes in winter are Mary & Elizabeth (December), Sermon on the Mount (January), and The Good Samari-tan (February). Pre-K children follow the same lessons but do not follow the rotation model. Their classroom is located in the Upper Education Wing, South End. Stop in when picking up your child and see how the rooms are set up each month. For more information about the Sunday School program, contact Sue Zografos (759-8396 / 438-0791/[email protected]).

Middle & High School Youth Program (7th-12th Graders)—We have a

unique program for youth on Sundays. Each Sunday of the month has a separate agenda. On the first Sunday of the month, our youth help to lead worship by being an usher, greet-er, lay reader or a musician under the music director’s guidance. Other Sundays of the month will include a speaker who will share their life experience; sermon feedback time; or participation in a mission project. Each class meeting usually includes a snack as well. Stop up and see the Youth room on the third floor!

Confirmation Class begins January 2017 and is open to 9th graders who are

ready to explore what it means to confirm for themselves the promises made at their baptism and to be commissioned to serve as full members of the congregation. The classes are led by Rev. Dr. Greg Hall or Rev. Judith Brown Bryan. The Confirmands are also accompanied through the year by a mentor of their choosing whom we hope will become a trusted adult through their teen years and beyond.

Confirmands meet for education and mission on 10 occasions between January 8 and their Confirmation in worship on June 4. For more information about dates and requirements, please see Greg.

Sunday Morning Adult Education—8:30 am in the Lower Educa-

tion Wing. Currently this class is discussing Celebration of Discipline by Rich-ard J. Foster. This study should conclude by the new year. As a group, it will be decided by mid-December what the next study will be. This self-directed group is always open to anyone who wants to join us on any Sunday. If you are interested or have questions, the contacts for the group are Steve or Mar-gie Dale (634-8077).

During the week…

Last Monday of the month, 6:30 pm—This is our men’s group formed to discuss theology and modeled on the Inklings. If you recall, C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien and friends created a group called the Inklings that focused on the life of the mind in a Christian context, in a pub, with no women. We will seek to follow this pattern by meeting on the last Monday of the month (no December meeting) at The Cornerstone Bar and Grill, 10651 Main St., Clarence (corner of Main and Sawmill Rd., one block east of Ransom Rd.) If you want to join us for dinner we will meet at 6:30pm; for discussion only come at 7:00. An article for discussion will be available on the Narthex kiosk a couple of weeks prior to the meeting. Hope to see you there!

Wellspring for Women: Who Is Jesus?

Tuesdays 9:30-11 am—January 17, 24 & 31 and February 7 & 14

We continue our Horizons bible study entitled Who Is Jesus? What a Difference a Lens Makes by Judy Siker. We explored the four gospels this past fall and now look at the per-spectives of Paul and extra biblical literature, as well as how Jews and Muslims view Jesus. Finally, we will look at contemporary views about Jesus. It promises to be stimulating and challenging to our learning, conversation, and spiritual growth! Wellspring is an ever-forming group. All are welcome to come as often as you are able. Over the years, Well-spring has been blessed by women of every age and stage, by friends and guests, and by an ever-deepening sense of community. The Holy Spirit continues to surprise and encourage us individually and as a group. Every woman of every decade is welcome. Do join us. Feel free to bring a friend or someone you would like to intro-duce to Clarence Presbyterian Church. For more information please see Greg who can direct you to one of our leaders.

Kids’ Night Out, K– 5th Graders

Kids Night Out is a FREE monthly fellowship program for children in Kindergarten to fifth grade. It is held in the lower Fellowship Hall from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Friends are always welcome and dinner (pizza) is provided. Its purpose is to provide parents with a night out and our children with an opportunity to get to know each other bet-ter. This year, to honor our church’s bicentennial, our program will be based on David Macaulay's The Cathedral, the story of the

building of a Gothic Cathedral by a mythical town. Each night we explore a theme with games, crafts, and fun. Our schedule for winter is as follows:

December 2, 2016, 6:00-9:00 pm. Note the program extends to 9:00 pm

and nursery care will be provided for younger siblings. We will have a medie-val fair in keeping with our theme.

Thank You Notes: To the Congregation of the Clarence Presbyterian Church, I am very grateful for the generous scholar-

ship that I received from an anonymous donor. I will use this monetary gift toward my tuition at the Uni-versity at Buffalo for this semester, I will continue on in my major of biological sciences. I would also like to thank the scholarship committee of the Clarence Presbyterian Church for your consideration. This do-nation is greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Lauren Knoell

We should have written this note a little over a year ago when Mary’s mother passed away. Just a few months later, Mary’s brother lost his courageous battle with cancer. Then, Dave’s dad began having ad-ditional health issues requiring many trips and stays in the hospital. He passed in May; Dave’s mom fol-lowed him four months later. So we’re finally writing, and hopefully not again for a long time, to thank everyone who sent sympathy cards, offered encouragement and prayers this past difficult year. You all made a difference in our lives. Your care and support was much appreciated and helped us carry on. Dave, Mary, Tyler and Derek Burghardt.

Thank you from Sue Kinnin and family: I would like to thank my church family and friends for all your prayers and love for my 3 year old, great grandson, Zachary Kinnin, during his brain surgery at Children's Hospital on Tuesday, November 1. He has been removed from ICU and in a regular room asking for his Halloween candy. "Good sign for memory." He has a long road ahead of him and your prayers have brought him this far. Prayers are everything. Thank you. (Note: as of November 1 Zachary came home!)
