Educational Services Department ESD Daycare J. Levac With the start of a new year, Daycares were busy preparing to receive the students on the first day of school. Communication with parents is essential at this time of year. The first Daycare meeting took place on Thursday September 11th; Anne Tetro from Food Services was present. A celebration was held on September 11th for the 2nd group to graduate from the AEP – Daycare Educator’s course. “Play it Fair” workshop was given by Equitas on September 16th to Daycares that had not participated before. English Language Arts A. Scott Workshops were held for new teachers in August. Several teachers received help to develop literacy plans for the year. The first meeting of the Leadership Committee for English Language Education in Quebec was held on September 19th. Plans are underway for Battle of the Books Junior (B.O.B. Jr.) This will involve elementary cycle 3 students. • Two schools have received in-service workshops on Running Records and Curriculum Planning. Elementary Mathematics R. Binet & C. Brunet Promote Mathematics Curriculum Mapping using Learning and Evaluation Situations (LESs) throughout the year as part of best teaching and learning practices to develop the 3 competencies • Introduced the Evaluation Tools Spiral Booklet that consolidates the understanding of the QEP’s mathematics competencies and knowledge acquisition: evaluation criteria, essential knowledge, progression of learning and framework for evaluation for each cycle. Working on the development and the organization of this year’s Math Olympics Support new Teachers, in-school visits and new teachers’ workshops Implementation of “Numerik”, cycle 1 Math in French & Tamtam, cycle 2 Math, Français Plus: Numerik and TamTam are offering interactive lessons using virtual manipulatives to develop a better understanding of math concepts through the use of the Smart Board: 16 schools received their Numerik subscription and training, 3 Français Plus received their TamTam subscription and training Français langue seconde, préscolaire/primaire H-A Denton Workshops were held for New Teachers in August Individual support was given to teachers needing help with curriculum planning, classroom organization, balanced literacy, etc. School in-service sessions were delivered on “Évaluation en lecture” GB+ Attended the Language Network sub-committee meeting to establish this year’s focus • First stages in developing the “Qui lira vaincra junior” project, which will target cycle 3 elementary FSL classes Français langue seconde, préscolaire/primaire M. Special attention was given to our new teachers. ESD is part of the New Teachers Committee and contributes to the design and planning of workshops throughout the year. We are consulting and producing lists of valuable educational digital resources to enrich teaching and learning in the classroom. The High school board wide workshops held on September 20 were a success. Some of our teachers attended the (Youth Cegep Transition Conference) YCT to discuss various transition issues from social adaptation to academic success. Preparations are underway for the October 4th workshops for our elementary teachers. Univers Social, Science & Technologie S. Lussier Worked with different school teams for the integration of the program “Éclairs de sciences”. Offered Workshop on Robotic and animated classroom activities. We now have 3 NXT classroom kits and 3 WeDo classroom kits that can be borrowed. If you are interested please, contact me. • Working on a new pilot project to integrate the SmarterScience framework as a teaching approach in sciences and to increase the level of inquiry in “science- technologie” Creating and organizing in collaboration with Katherine Davey a series of tutorials on “science-technologie”. Nutrition Education R. Chiappetta & M. Cardin• Provided a teacher at Dawson Alternative with materials for

her cooking classes and helped her plan for the year.• Developed and posted eight new recipes in the portal for

the “Cooking for Autonomy” program. Recipe testingunderway to add additional recipes.

• Developed a starter-kit for high school teachers of cookingclasses. Kit includes nutrition and food safety materials,recipes and websites.

• WOTP cooking classes have started at Lakeside with thesemi-skilled and pre-work students.

Pearson Community Partnership N. Battet• Six elementary schools, cycle one, will take part in a program

with our partner, Canadian Centre for Architecture, entitled“ABC of Architecture”.

• Lindsay Place High School will be one of five high schoolsin Canada to take part in a “Let’s Talk Science” program toinspire students to appreciate careers in STEM.

• Beaconsfield High School, cycle one, will visit the VanierWildlife and Environment program at the Vanier FieldStation in Lachute on October 3, 2013.

• ESD Pearson Partnership program will be launching a newEntrepreneurship form for entrepreneurial projects for 2013-2014. Deadline for projects will be December 15, 2013.

• LBPSB is working in partnership with Bombarier aerospaceto develop Science curriculum.

Physical Education and Health P. Gilson• Some of our Physical Education Teachers attended a CPR

training course on the September 20th Professional Day.• Plans have been finalized for the annual Ultimate Frisbee

Tournament which will be taking place at 3 differentlocations (Dorset, Greendale and St. Anthony) on TuesdaySeptember 24th.

• Plans have been finalized for the annual HandballTournament, which will be held on October 8th and 9th atDorset and Westpark school.

• The Elementary Physical Education & Health teachers willmeet on Friday October 4th for a morning of ProfessionalDevelopment being given by some of our own teachers.

• Plans have been finalized for the annual Cross Country Run,which will be held on October 22nd, and 23rd at theMorgan Arboretum.

POP, Entrepreneurship, Lab Safety, Work-PlacementC. Pratt

As a new addition to the ESD family, I am learning fastwithin my role in order to support your staff.

• Two POP workshops and one EN workshop have beenoffered. To follow up with teachers, brief emails will be sentout with information and resources for use in theirclassrooms. I hope to have the opportunity to support allPOP and EN teachers individually as needed.

• On October 4th Science and Technology lab technicianshave been invited to a meeting to discuss professionaldevelopment needs and upcoming workshop opportunities,along with contributing to the systemization of safetyprotocol and procedures in classroom (labs and workshops).

• Work Placement Animators met on September 25th anddiscussed how to find appropriate student work placementsand how to collaborate for the success of students.

Community Liaison/Action Lasalle M. Albert• Action Perseverance Program has expanded into the

Pierrefonds-Roxboro Area. We will be working withThorndale, Greendale, Sunshine, Springdale and Riverdaleon programs with community partners to help our studentspersevere.

• Beurling Academy, Lakeside Academy and LCCHS will betaking part in the “Clip ton 514” film festival. Students fromeach of the schools will be filming 3-minute videos that dealwith multiculturalism and diversity in the Montreal area.Students will attend a red carpet event in April at CinemaQuartier-Latin.

• Lakeside Academy will be joining the First RoboticsCompetition as a rookie team.

• McGill/LBPSB Homework Zone will be starting again atOrchard, Verdun and Riverview. 56 McGill students will bevolunteering in the schools this year.

Club in the library• PCHS students are helping out with their Library fundraiser

at Chapters• Dorval is enjoying its cool revamped library!• School librarians are gearing up for author visits & planning

English Language Arts J. Le Blanc• Welcomed new teachers to Secondary ELA – gave “New

Teacher” workshop• Validated a new Sec 5 LES for MELS to be released mid-

year• Planned and led ELA “cracker-barrel” discussion group at

the Youth-CEGEP Transition Conference (YCT) with a VanierEnglish professor

• Prepared Sec 5 ELA teachers for changes to the writtenresponse in the upcoming June MELS uniform exam

Leadership J. Le Blanc• Coordinated the release of leadership advisors to attend

the annual Canadian Student Leadership Conference inMontague, PEI

Mathematics F. Redivo• Gave 2 New Teacher workshops, updated the Portal

community and created an Edmodo group for our teachers• Built an understanding for LUMIX in preparation for training others• Prepared for and facilitated at the LCEEQ YCT conference• Conducted data analysis on June 2013 results and

prepared reports for sharing• Worked with teachers in a school in support of a Chantier 7 project

Science & Technology K. Davey• New teachers in Science and Technology were provided with

an overview of the curriculum and available resources throughAugust information sessions and one-on-one meetings.

• Five workshops were offered on the September 20thBoard-Wide Pedagogical Day: o a training session for the Explore Learning Gizmos o two workshops on Mechanical Engineeringo a workshop for the Practical Component in cycle 1 o a workshop providing an overview of a new Evaluation

Situation• Work has begun to further develop and improve the study

guides for secondary 4 Science & Technology and AppliedScience & Technology.

French M. Delsemme• Offered one information session on August 27 to new teachers.• Met with parents of secondary home-schooled students on

Sept. 10th.• MELS training session on information related to FSL dossier

on Sept. 13th• Offered two training workshops on Mon portfolio d’écriture

and Mon portfolio lecture en FLS (Sept. 17th and Sept. 25th).• Prepared several requests from MELS for the funding of

French projects. Initiated our FSL teachers to SLAM andstarted our tour across the School Board.

• Initiated the shipment to all High Schools of materialnecessary to undertake the second data collection relatedto our longitudinal study, aiming at measuring the progressof grade 7 students in their writing process.
