HIGHLIGHTS OF 2017MAKING CANDLES

The children in the primary grades learned about the process of making candles in their handwork/craft-making class. In order for the candles to form, they must be dipped multiple times, layer upon layer, until the candle is formed. This requires much patience and the boys and girls were able to see the fruits of their labor. They lit the candles at the Mayan ceremony to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Escuela Caracol.

10TH ANNIVERSARY

In June 2017, the school celebrated it’s 10th year anniversary. A ceremony was held to thank Mother Earth for her blessings and each child expressed their gratitude by lighting a candle made with his/her own hands. There were cultural and artistic presentations presented by all the grades for the families. In addition there were games, food and cake. We also celebrated the Equinox of Saint John, a tradition where the 6th graders jump over the fire to signify their departure from their last year of primary school.

As part of the history curriculum, the students in 5th & 6th grades performed the play in the palapa at the Escuela Caracol: Themistocles. When the theatrical piece begins, the Olympic Gods are fighting, and their fights will soon cause war between men. Aphrodite, who is still angry about the Greek collapse in the Trojan War a thousand years prior, encourages Ares and Hefest to support the Persians. This results in Athena and Hermes supporting the Athenians. On Earth, Themistocles is the only Greek who sees the enormity of the Persian threat and the only Athenian who understands the importance of a strong navy for the future of his city. Themistocles escapes from an attack and appears in front of the Ekklésia or Council and convinces its citizens to use public funds to build a new type of boat -- the Tri-Oar - that combines power with maneuverability.

PREPARING THE BREAD

One of the weekly activities done with the children in Kindergarten is making bread for their snack. First the children prepare the ingredients: flour, yeast, salt, water and edible seeds. Then they mix all the ingredients and knead them together until it is ready to be created into the shape that each child wishes. Into the oven it goes and then it is ready to eat! The children really enjoy this activity. Manual dexterity, living thought. (RS)

In August 2017, Sandra Pérez, kindergarten teacher, completed her training as Waldorf teachers at the Centro de Desarrollo Antroposófico in Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico. It is with many thanks for the support of the Internationaal Hulpfonds-IHF that our teachers can continue with their training and delve more into the pedagogy. Sandra started her path at the school in 2011, as a Kaqchikel teacher in the primary grades. Then she worked as an assistant in kindergarten for 5 years and in 2017 took over the role as the primary teacher in Kindergarten. She’s from San Marcos la Laguna and lives in Barrio 1. She studied elementary, middle, and high school in the public school in the community. To begin her day, she arrives at school very early to prepare her classroom for the children. She accompanies them for four hours with different activities each day such as the morning circle, watercolor painting, crafts, preparing the snack, taking a walk, telling stories using puppets, until it is time to end their day. She receives and bids farewell to each child with a warm hug. She is happy caring and accompanying each child through their day and is forming a close relationship with each of the families.
