Welcome to the ESCP International Workshop Antwerp !

Dear colleagues,

We are delighted to invite you on behalf of the European Society of Clinical Pharmacy (ESCP) and the Royal Pharma-ceutical Society of Antwerp (KAVA) to the ESCP Spring Workshop that will be held on 17 and 18 May 2019 in Antwerp, Belgium. For the second time, Belgium is proud to host this highly regarded International Workshop and especially at the occasion of the

40th Anniversary of the ESCP. The workshop will be dedicated towards anticoagulants and is entitled ‘State of the art in anticoagulation therapy: challenges and opportunities for pharmacists’. During this conference you will explore the roles and responsibilities of pharmacists working in various settings, including community pharmacies and hospitals, in providing the best pharmaceutical care and clinical pharmacy services to patients on anticoagulation. The introduction of the direct oral anticoagulants has drastically changed the treatment options for patients in need of anticoagulation and has come with advantages but also new challenges such as safeguarding that these drugs are appropriately prescribed by physicians and taken by patients. In both aspects, pharmacists play a crucial role that will be discussed among other items such as anticoagulation in complex patients, perioperative management and bridging, when to combine anticoagulants with antiplatelet therapy, management of side effects and many other aspects. These items will be covered during plenary sessions and oral communications, and further elaborated during different hands-on workshops. The mix between theory and practice is what makes this International Workshop so tangible and useful in daily practice. It will give you the opportunity to increase your knowledge as well as your skills regarding these lifesaving but also potentially hazardous drugs. For that purpose, key opinion leaders and scientists are awaiting you to share their experiences and to demonstrate how to reach excellence in anticoagulation care. So, if you are working in the domain of anticoagulation or just want to learn more about this topic, please join us at this occasion. The workshop is suitable for pharmacists working in hospitals, community pharmacies, nursing homes, general practice, research and other. We would be honoured to welcome you in Antwerp!

Stephane Steurbaut President of the Workshop

The International Workshop will start on Friday 17 May 2019. During this 2-day workshop plenary lectures and workshops will involve topics includ-ing:

• New evidence and emerging data in anticoagulation management• Unmet needs and pharmacy excellence in the delivery of anticoagulation care• Managing interactions with anticoagulants in the real world: an opportunity for

monitoring? • The safe use of anticoagulants in complex patients: focus on DOACs• Anticoagulation and antiplatelet therapy: do’s and don’ts • Adherence and seamless care in anticoagulation therapy: the way forward

The cosmopolitan city of Antwerp is without doubt Belgium’s capital of cool and deserves its place in the Lonely Planet ‘Top 10 cities to visit’. Its intriguing medieval heart with plenty of café-filled cobbled lanes, a riverside fortress, the impressive 123 m high ‘Onze-Lieve-Vrouwe’ cathedral and a beautiful city hall contrast perfectly with cutting-edge architecture. Among Antwerp’s top trumps are the avant-garde fashion scene, vibrant night-life and excellent cuisine. But most of all, it’s a cultural hub with several prestigious museums like the Plantin Moretus, MAS and the Rubenshuis, home to the famous painter Pieter Paul Rubens. Or in other words, Antwerp has something for everyone!
