What a great response. While several folks brought their own shovels, rakes, and hand tools, Dave Robertson, one our trap shooters, raised the bar by bringing his own tractor, which was used the entire time. Thanks Dave. Also, we never want to forget to mention board member and clean up director Ed Migdal, for another fine job. Ed would not forgive me if appropriate thanks didn’t go out to the support staff - folks who pick up the food and drinks, the kitchen, and BBQ staff. Thanks for a great lunch. Some folks were part of a loud and obvious project. Others, such as the gentleman on the 150-yard range with buckets, was quietly cleaning up by himself and serving his association. In this newsletter will be a list of all the folks who came out, please try to find the time to personally thank a couple of them. For those who may not know, we are above and directly in line with a public water supply. For this reason, the trap field is always job one. We appreciate the trap shooters that join us, both member and non- member, and we could always use more. The clean-ups are an important part of our long existence arsenal. Thanks to all. We are One association. Electrician Wanted We are looking for a member who is a licensed working electrical contractor. The association has new and maintenance electrical items that need to be addressed. Of course, we are always thankful for any time and material donated, but some work items need to be taken care of sooner rather than later and we are more than happy to be invoiced for certain projects. If you are interested in becoming an “association electrician” please contact me by email or phone. Special Thanks to Lucy and Juli Lucy Nelson is the association treasurer. Most members have no idea the depth of the financial ‘stuff’ this association does, and Lucy is always on top of it. She is always polite when explaining the same things over and over to us board members. EF&GA is very financially sound, and Lucy is a credit to that. Lucy also has a passion for the junior program and you will always see her involved. Juli Everett is the association clerk. Everyone knows Juli because you had to go through her to get here. I swear Juli has the entire membership memorized. Her response time to my questions is almost zero. Almost all have a great experience with Juli, but Juli is also tasked with membership issues and she does it with great professionalism & courtesy. Two more folks who make my life easier. I Work Party (12/8/2018)You have all heard me mention how much we all appreciate everyone that makes it to a work party. Some people probably think that I just copy and paste this section of the newsletter after each work party. The truth is that I am

really stoked after every work party. When I get to be part of a group that comes together and makes a huge difference in just one day, I find it motivating. Anyone who knows me well has heard my lecture about the difference between a customer and a member – participation and ownership.

As usual, I want to recognize each and every participant of the December 2018 work party in a direct and public way. The task of transcribing all of these names from the green-sheets is a long and tedious job and Patrick Russ did it to make my job easier. I really appreciate that too. If you know anyone on the list, be sure to thank him/her for his/her service to the Association. Here is the list: Ed Migdal, Tim Hoy, Kevin Miller, Tony Pendzich, Jim Beck, Alan Van Buskirk, Erik Olson, Joe Urban, Chris Cote, William Quon, Mike Melkonian, Scott M. Lund, Vince Console, Darrin Eaton, Sean Depriest, Joel Everson, Larry Smith, Larry King, Rick Tellis, Steve Peak, Aleksandra Guirrich, Jerry Strauss, Joey Claiborne, Mike Marks, Julie Marks, Geralaine Mylig, Jim Halgoung, Mark Baldwin, Alonzo Clark, Breen Emery, Mare Lindbeck, Dale Misner, Randy Gompin, Joseph Mak, Charles Young, Kestrin “Hurricane” Walsh, Rhyan Walsh, Robert Walsh, Bert Barbosa, Jim McKim, Larry Allen, Craig Rogers, Steve Samperi, Eva Samperi, Aon Samperi, Jim Preston, Conrad Smith, Yosi Boublil, Laura “Scotti” Clary, Paul Varesio, Bud Smith, Roger Fannin, Al Anzelone, Bill Townsend, Geoff Orchin, Jeff Colburn, Eugene Demniaiec, Katik Lenab, Olive Learab, Ken Shepard, Jen Shepard, Van Shepard, Dean Shepard, Gran Shepard, Rodney Mitchell, Fed Slikker, David Pendergrass, David Disque, Bill Williams, Stan McDaniel, Charle McDaniel, Harold Itchkawich, Tom Itchkawich, Craig Gillson, Norm Porst, Frank Alessio, Mark Ruhm, Jay Zimmett, Dave Rylaardam, Wells Peck, Steve Baron, Bill Hall, Jeff Draa, Rob Davis, Matt Leonard, Dave Robertson, Tejinder Roparai

I Make Time to Attend a General MeetingBring a friend to the next General Meeting and one or both of you could win a few bucks. At the last General Meeting, James Matteo won the $25 door prize. Had he attended the meeting, Walt Waggener would have won the $500 Attendance Prize. The next General Meeting is 1/3/2019. If you don’t show up, you can’t win.

I Donor List (12/13/2018)Thanks to all who donated to the raffle table at the last General Meeting – Bill Williams, Bud Smith, Jim Beck, Pamela A. Tucker, Vince Franand, Mark and Laurel Baldwin, Jerry Strauss, Neil Pisk, Breen Emery, Elvio Marchi, Chuck Daugerty, Joyce and Frank Alessio, Patrick Russ, Darrin Eaton, Craig Rogers, Wayne Brunner, Robert Ramirez, Dennis Wahlen, Don Hudson, Steve Baran, Leonard Hodges, Bill and Reynalou Linamen, Ray Bucholz, Eric Elsam, Frank Holconte, Ed Migdal

I Be a Raffle DonorYour donations help support our monthly General Meeting Raffle. Our entertainment Chairman is Bud Smith. If you have items you would like to donate to our monthly General meeting raffle, please contact Smoldering Bud at [email protected]. Please consider new or used items in working order. Thanks for your support.

I Guns & Roses RaffleA big thank you for all our members who supported Ray Bucholz’ Mom’s Creek and Black Diamond Christmas Gun Raffle. Your participation makes it possible to improve our range and support black powder shooting. Congratulations to the lucky winners: Leonard Hodges, John West, Greg Rylaardam, Yosi Boublil, Scotti Clary and Robert Reid.

I Dave Ransberger Memorial Joy DriveI want to thank everyone who donated toys and participated in the fund-raising for the annual Joy Drive. At the December Membership Meeting, the raffle was held and Ren Everett won the Gentlemen Jack gift set. Tim Hoy won the Crown Royal. And finally, Pete Olson won the custom silver earrings. We all had a great time and we raised money for the cause.

This whole event was arranged by Linda Linaker. Anyone who knows her is used to her greeting during months that end with ‘R’. It is always something about the Joy Drive. Her enthusiasm is infectious so she recruited me to help out. The next thing I knew she has Chris Cote, Patrick Russ, her husband John Linaker and me all together taking time off from work to help get all of the donations to Camp Pendleton. We got together to bring two pickup trucks and a minivan filled with toys along with over $1000 in gift cards to the Chaplain’s Office on Camp Pendleton, with another truckload or two from Cal Customs scheduled to arrive the following Monday. These toys and gift cards are all destined for the families of our deployed military volunteers that live here in North County. I considered it an honor to get the privilege to help with this fabulous EF&GA tradition. Dave Ransberger would have been proud of us.

I Metallic Cartridge Reloading Class (1/19/2019)HAPPY NEW YEAR! It’s a great time for beginning to acquire the skills and knowledge to load your own ammunition and not be limited to market vagaries. Although ammo has plentifully come back to the market, there are California restrictions (Prop. 63) that have been generated to hinder such purchases, both in-store and on-line. The opportunity to learn reloading techniques that will allow you to produce timely, consistent and accurate ammunition while receiving NRA certified reloading instruction is available on 1/19/2019.

The First Part is strictly academic in structure and conducted at the EF&GA meeting hall. This sessionis begins at 8A.M. on Saturday, 1/19/2019 and will last until approximately 12 noon.

The Second Part is a “Hands On” reloading bench experience. This session generates the practical, detailed experience necessary while you successfully complete a number of your personal reloads. Scheduling the second session will be a mutually agreed to time and date. This scheduling will be completed at the first session.

The cost is two tiered: EF&GA members = $100; non-members = $110. For those individuals without any reloading supplies (empty cases, powder, primers, etc.) a $10 surcharge will be applied. Prior registration and a $20 deposit is required to secure a place in this class.

Registration is necessary and limited. For more information, contact Elvio Marchi at [email protected] or 760-734-3942

“W elcome to a new year, and for some of you new firearms, which prompts me to remind everyone of the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) Rules of Firearms

Safety, and the first four are the big ones.

• ALWAYS KEEP THE MUZZLE POINTED IN A SAFE DIRECTION • FIREARMS SHOULD BE UNLOADED WHEN NOT ACTUALLY IN USE • DON’T RELY ON YOUR GUN’S “SAFETY” • BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT’S BEYOND IT

• USE CORRECT AMMUNITION • IF YOUR GUN FAILS TO FIRE WHEN THE TRIGGER IS PULLED, HANDLE WITH CARE! • ALWAYS WEAR EYE AND EAR PROTECTION WHEN SHOOTING • BE SURE THE BARREL IS CLEAR OF OBSTRUCTIONS BEFORE SHOOTING • DON’T ALTER OR MODIFY YOUR GUN (No Dremel’s!), AND HAVE GUNS SERVICED REGULARLY • LEARN THE MECHANICAL AND HANDLING CHARACTERISTICS OF THE FIREARM YOU ARE USING Reference: https://www.nssf.org/safety/rules-firearms-safety/

With anything repetitive you need “muscle memory” so these rules become second nature. Take advantage of the classes and friendly competitions that are offered. Shooting in a structured environment will make them second nature and you won’t forget them especially when you are shooting alone.

Some of you have probably made a new years fitness resolution to work out at the gym. You will probably go once maybe twice and then feel bad about yourself when you stop going...

I want to give you an opportunity to appease your conscience by becoming a Range Safety Officer (RSO) and keeping fit by helping manage the range. You will jog from range-to-range, repeatedly explaining what the Hot and Cold procedures are. Perform jumping-jacks at the Pistol range pointing out the numerous signs on how many targets you can have. Increase cardio-circulation (panic) assisting with new shooters and more often than I would like “experienced” shooters.

Please let me know if you are interested; we have a good team and are always looking for others who want to make this a fun and safe place to shoot.

TRAP CORNERBy Darrin Eaton

New TCS and Saturday Trap Schedules (1/5/2019)The Trap Card Shoot was designed specifically for the more advanced trap shooters so that we could shoot more advanced games such as Handicap (shooting from the 27-Yard line), Doubles, Sliders, etc.. This event was run for 2 hours each Sat-urday and staffing has been difficult. People have also been asking to make the event longer. As a compromise, the event will now be monthly instead of weekly and will run for a longer period of time. Starting in January 2019, on the First Sat-urday of each month, the Trap Card Shoot will run from 1 – 4 PM. Also, regular Saturday Trap will begin at 4 PM (instead of 5 PM) every Saturday (not just the First Saturday). This will simplify the calendar and provide a longer TCS event. The Pot Shoot will also have a time adjustment for 2019. It is now scheduled for 3 PM – 6 PM (or until they are done) on the 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 5th Saturdays. The 2nd Saturday is still scheduled for Junior Trap so there is no Pot Shoot that week.

Trap StraightsLast month we ran short on space in the newsletter so I made room by skipping the trap straights. People responded, so by popular demand, below are the straights from last month and this month combined.

How to place a classified ad

in the newsletter Please help to keep the classified section easy to read and well organized. There is no cost as long as you are an EF&GA member in good standing. Classified ads run for ONE newsletter (one month). If you want to repeat an ad for another month (with price adjustments, etc…) simply re-submit the ad request via e-mail.

Please submit requests for classified ads via email to [email protected] and be sure to double-check for spelling and grammar errors.

Members Only are allowed to submit Classified advertisements. Your Membership Number must be included with any advertisement request so that we can properly vet the submission before it is published. The Membership Number will NOT appear in the advertise-ment. Your Membership Number is on your member-ship badge on the same side as your photo.

No Illegal Transactions may be advertised in this newsletter. It is now illegal to sell ammunition in California without either going through an FFL or a licensed ammunition reseller. EF&GA cannot facilitate any illegal commerce of a state regulated commodity. This is also why firearm sales should include a phrase similar to Buyer pays DROS when advertising the sale of a firearm.

It may sound obvious but requests for classifieds are frequently received with not enough information to be useful to a reader. There are 5 main components of a classified ad:

Category – Most classifieds fall into one of 3 catego-ries, ‘For Sale’, ‘Wanted’, or ‘Lost & Found’.

Subject/Title – This will appear in bold in the advertise-ment. This should be short (2 or 3 words) and concise.

Description – This is the body of the advertisement and can be a few sentences but not more than a paragraph. Abbreviations appear cryptic and are not recommend-ed unless they are well known acronyms.

Price – A specific dollar amount as well as qualifiers give the reader important information. For example, “$600 or Best Offer, Buyer pays DROS, Will consider trades”

Contact Info – This should be a name AND a phone number (including area code) and/or an e-mail address.

TOP GUN 2018by Patrick Russ

On December 16th, 2018 the eyes of the county were focused on the annual Top Gun shoot held at the Escondido Fish and Game Association. Shooters came from as far away as Murrieta to compete in this prestigious event. Only the best, of the best, of the best are invited to compete at Top Gun. The event started off with the pistol shoot, followed by rifle, then archery. The weather was perfect.

Savannah “Gretzky” Winn, captured her spot at Top Gun as the Most Improved Girl of 2018. With all the great shooting that we have had this year that was no small achievement. Her first time shooting a pistol was just a few short weeks ago. Teamed up with her good friend Sheridan Abrajano, the two girls spent many hours at the range honing their pistol shooting skills. She put in the time and effort to practice and learn the proper technique for pistol shooting. Gretzky finished with a 3rd place in rifle and 2nd overall.

The real Cinderella story, “Hurricane” Kestrin Walsh came out of nowhere to have a solid day in all disciplines. A last minute change of plans took this alternate shooter into one of the coveted Top Gun spots. Here, she used her superior skills and steadfast confidence to wear down the opposition. She walked away with 2nd place in pistol for her efforts.

Last year’s Cinderella story, Michelle Fan, took 1st place in pistol. I know that Michelle put in a lot of practice over the last few weeks and it showed. Michelle is one of the most consistent shooters that I have seen. She seems to always be on her game.

This year’s Grand Champion was Daysha Halbert. She earned her spot by being the High Girl. Daysha was on her game as she dominated both the rifle and pistol events. She has had a solid year of shooting achieving the title of Distinguished Expert multiple times. Daysha also spent the last few weeks working with both Sheridan and Savannah. Together, they were able to improve all of their scores.

All of the shooters did an outstanding job and they should be as proud of themselves as we are of them. From a safety stand point, I would put these kids up against any adult group, any time. Safety is their priority and they do an amazing job of following the Rules to Live By, to the letter. I can’t begin to explain how proud I am of all the shooters.

For those of you that are keeping score. 6 of the 9 shooters were girls. I’ve always said that women are the best shooters. Additionally, 6 of the 9 shooters are also part of the Junior Coaching program. These are the young adults that have committed themselves to helping others become better shooters. By coaching young shooters, giving outstanding safety briefs, and largely running their own events (Under Adult Supervision), these kids are becoming the leaders of tomorrow.

A special thank you to everyone that makes the Junior Marksmanship Program happen. Your efforts here are an investment in the future of our sport and our country.

I would also like to thank everyone that donated to this year’s Joy Drive. We delivered four trucks full of toys and over a thousand dollars worth of gift cards to the military families of Camp Pendleton. Thanks to your efforts, it was a Merry Christmas for many more children.

14

RULES TO LIVE BY1. Treat every firearm as if it were loaded

2. Never point your firearm at anything you don’t intend to shoot

3. Keep your finger straight and off the trigger until you intend to fire

4. Know your target and the surroundings

January is finally here, and with it, a new season of silhouette shooting. In 2018 we had a number of new faces show up to give it a try and most of them look like they will be coming back for 2019. The January contest will be a Super Short Range contest. Targets will be at 25, 50, and 75 yards. All shoot-ing will be from the 150 Yard Range Ramada. The Super Short Range contests are geared for the new shooters. This is THE CONTEST for those that want to give Black Powder Silhouette shooting a try for the first time. We will help you get started by walk-ing you through the relays, and help you with any equipment issues during the contest. See the event description on the EF&GA website for details and contact information.

Pistol starts at 08:30 and rifle starts at 10:00. Specta-tors and family are welcome to watch from behind the Ramada.

For those of you that like to shoot paper targets, the EF&GA range also hosts a monthly event called Muzzle Loading Bullseye. Bullseye events occur on the 1st Sunday of each month on the 150 range. This monthly program is for traditional muzzle loading competitors. We shoot rifles, pistols, and trade guns (smoothbores) on various courses of fire at paper targets. Shooting for precision allows the competitor to measure his/her progress on an ongo-ing basis. We keep our own database which allows for competition within the various classes of shoot-ers, masters, experts, sharpshooters, and marksmen. Look on the events description page of our EF&GA website for contact information for 2019. (Please note that I do not run this event)

Thank youGarth Warner
