saver for future missions • Mature technologies significantly reduce project risks

(performance, time, costs) • One of the main contributors to scientific & engineering

excellence • One of the main sources of new ideas within the Agency

The TRP is the backbone of ESA’s innovation effort covering up to proof-of-concept TRL 3

Net Parametric Characterization and Parabolic Test

Objectives: Under the Clean Space initiative, to develop theoretical & experimental knowledge on throw-nets for grasping orbital debris. To provide a validated simulator for throw-nets in ADR capture operations and to validate the system in representative environmental conditions (0G)

Timeline: Oct. 2013 – May 2015 Contractor: Prime: SKA Polska (PL) Subcontractor : Optinav (PL) Budget : 300K€

Tasks: 1) Elaborate detailed system requirements for the net system, including validation. 2) Develop a mathematical model with system design parameters interdependence (e.g. cable dynamic parameters, size of flying masses, …), and on orbit environmental parameters (e.g. speed of throw). 3) Realise a parametric simulator of the capture operation. 4) Identify and characterise materials and assembly technology 5) Design a parabolic flight test campaign, related test equipment and measurement instrumentation/techniques. 6) Procure/manufacture integrate and validate test equipment on ground. 7) Perform the test with a representative sample of net and launcher specimens to cover the principal design parameters and validate the mathematical model. 8) Perform a mathematically rigorous validation of the model against the test results.

SpaceMan - A SpaceWire Network Management Tool

Objectives: Ambitious for new space industry ! The objective of the Spaceman activity is to provide a tool taking advantage of the SpaceWire Network Discovery & Configuration Protocols (SpW-NDCP). The tool should be able to identify the devices connected to the network (topology), perform drawings, manage configuration, etc. Achievements: Very Good ! - The user requirement specification phase lasted much longer

than planned because ITTI are completely new to space business and space technology and therefore had to be extensively (but informally) trained.

- ITTI reacted very well to this training and produced at the end of 2014 a nice User Requirement Document, including the specification of a demonstrator that will indeed demonstrate all the features of SpW-NDCP.

- Development of tool, with the functionality of graph and tree representations of SpaceWire networks as well as basic connections to the PVS

Timeline: Kick-off Jan. 2014 – End June 2015 Contractor: Prime: ITTI Sp. z o.o. (PL) Subcontractor: Teletel S.A. (GR)

Budget: 200K€

Docking Impender

Objectives: The docking Impender is an Docking system using EPAR technology which is based on the Lagiewka Effect. The EPAR module transforms the kinetic energy of linear motion into kinetic energy of rotating mass, in order to reduce forces on contacting objects, rebound, displacement while increasing stablity. Mechanical energy from the impact will be converted into electrical energy. Startiger’s “Docking Impender” project was tasked with developping a demonstrator compatible with the Cubesat Standard. Tasks: - Feasibility study - Requirement definition - EM of EDS demonstrator Development - Test campaign in relevant environment (TRL 5)

Timeline: Kick-off 09/2014 – End 07/2015 Contractor: Prime: ABM SE (PL) Subcontractor : SSBV (PL), New Safety Technology (PL), EPAR (DE), New Idea (IR) Budget : 800K€

How can Polish companies participate in ESA activities? – Best Practices: R&D in general: • build up, strengthen and maintain your professional network with colleagues in industry,

research entities and agencies, • get to know the main players and potential consortium members • participate in conferences / workshops (for ground-related technos: Spaceops, TTC,

Space Debris Conference etc…) for TRP: • look at the published TRP work plans, identify interesting activities and think about

potential contributions and consortia • Consider the ESA Innovation Triangle Initiative (ITI) for Novel ideas (see next slides) • follow EMITS (ITTs and intended ITTs, express interest, start early to set-up / participate

in potential bidding teams) For GSTP: • understand ESA needs, have a look at the GSTP "compendium of activities“ • use your networks to formulate new ideas and exchange ideas with your national

agency to obtain support, • consult EMITS and ESA technology website • consider co-funding for AO-type activities (GSTP6E2) to prepare products and services

Three types of activities aimed at the different elements of the triangle: (A) Proof of Concept (for INVENTORS): fast validation of new ideas (B) Demonstration of Feasibility and Use (for DEVELOPERS): component

and/or breadboard development up to validation in the laboratory (C) Technology Adoption (for CUSTOMERS): development up to

validation in a relevant environment,

ITI is based on the “Innovation Triangle” concept requiring the collaboration of 3 different entities: an INVENTOR, a DEVELOPER and a CUSTOMER.

ITI: The objectives

The objective of ITI is to create a dynamic environment where disruptive innovations can be easily validated, developed and put to use in industry, thus contributing to a more competitive European

Space Industry.

The main characteristics of ITI are: Aims specifically at “disruptive technology innovations”:

Novel technologies or at least ‘novel to space’ Call for ideas with a standing Tender Evaluation Board meeting periodically Short “time to contract” based on simple proposal templates and a fast track

procedure for contract award Financed by the Technology Research Programme (~2M€ /year)

ITI gives industry the opportunity to submit unsolicited and innovative R&D proposals and to rapidly receive the funding needed,

if the activity is approved by the TEB.

Drop-Ship offers safe landings for Mars rovers

Objectives: StarTiger’s Dropter project was tasked with developing and demonstrating a European precision-landing capability for Mars and other targets. Achievements: During the eight-month project, the Dropter team was challenged to produce vision-based navigation and hazard detection and avoidance for the dropship. It has to identify a safe landing site and height before winching down its passenger rover on a set of cables. Flight testing took place at Airbus Defence and Space’s Trauen test site in northern Germany. This demonstration proved the concept allowing the dropship approach to be followed for follow-on developments by planetary missions to come.

Timeline: Kick-off Oct. 2013 – End May 2014 Contractor: Prime: ADS (DE) Sub : DFKI (DE), Spin Works (PT), University of POZNAN (PL)
