1. Play a barrier game:
each person in
the game has anidentical outlinedrawing;
one person,whose drawing ishidden behind abarrier givesinstructions to theothers to modifytheir pictures (e.g.colour some thingsin, draw objects in
particular places).2. Give a confusing
instruction so that theothers need to ask forclarification. Forexample, ask them tocolour something thatis not on the sheet, touse a colour that is notavailable.
Talk about confusinginstructions and the
importance of asking forclarification.
Alien game
Picture of an alien.Some everyday objects.
1. Explain to the childrenthat an alien has cometo earth and does notknow the English wordfor some things.
2. Get the alien to ask thechildren for an objectusing an alien word, e.g.Can I have the Kazooplease?
3. Get the children to thenask for clues to deduct
what the object is.4. If any of the children
speak differentlanguages get thechildren to give eachother instructions in theirown language.
Emphasise that it is goodto ask for clarification if wedo not understand and thatit can have a positiveoutcome.

Follow the leader 1. Give the children non-specific instructionssuch as Put your handsthere.
