New projectsin Eritrea
An initiative of pilotraum01 e.V. together with the societies WINTA-era e.V., Water Foundation and Human-Plus e.V.
medicine, water, art and culture
Eritrea, a country situated at the Horn of Africa, stands at the centre of our transdisciplinary initiative aimed at opening up new paths toward a self-determined, socio-culturally aligned development process.
Our aim is to strengthen the social infrastructure and cultural identity of a relatively young country that became independent from Ethiopia in 1993 after a 30-year war. A team of Eritrean and German partners worked on a concept that is based on an active engagement with the realities in Eritrea, the living conditions of its people and its environ-ment.
Together, these different pieces form a mosaic that should evolve into a sustainable commitment to be addressed and connected as a whole.
One precondition to further a suc-cessful cooperation model in Eritrea is the establishment of the interaction between many different initiatives, be it creative/art, technical, medical or environmental. Such a transdisciplinary dialogue is a promising start for a more complex understanding of the Eritrean people and of the dependencies bet-ween nature, health and culture.
A more complex perception also fos-ters new paths to solve existential challenges such as water supply, envi-ronmental pollution and hygiene in the sense of raising awareness among the Eritrean people. This also pertains to the active involvement of German-Erit-rean trained specialists to improve the efficiency of the much needed know-how, education and vocational training.
We aim at implementing our projects and goals as a trusting, long-term co-operation with local Eritreans with par-ticular emphasis on incorporating their very own cultural and social values and visions.
This can be achieved through deve-loping our projects and testing their feasibility together with our Eritrean partners. The Eritrean expatriate com-munity is an authentic intermediary and an essential link for our interactions with the Eritrean people at site and they guarantee the sustainable success oft he projects.

The spacious area surrounding the Orotta Clinic is the site for cooperation between German and Eritrean medical, technical, communications, environmen-tal, art and design experts focusing on the gynaecology department.
It is our goal to make the interrelation-ships between environmental problems, hygiene and avoidable infectious disea-ses transparent.
In the context of already existing initiati-ves in Eritrea from German development organizations such as Archemed-Doc-tors for Children in Need e.V. and Ham-mer Forum-Help for Children in Areas of Conflict e.V., we want to focus our initiati-ve on the following areas:
_Education and further training of Eritrean doc-
tors focusing on gynaecology, obstetrics and
anaesthetics.
_Education and further training of medical per-
sonnel
_Awareness and improvement of educational
possibilities by using modern communication
methods (textbooks, IT, Internet/telemedicine)
_Awareness and improvement of the information
infrastructure to prevent diseases
_Support and improvement of hygienic condi-
tions and water supply in the medical facilities in
Asmara
_Education and further training of technicians for
maintaining and repairing medical devices and
hardware
_Content-based extensions of waiting areas for
family members and dependants of patients, for
children and for clinic personnel, such as alterna-
tive acoustic and visual guidance and education
systems
_Restoration of the laundry

The goal of our bilateral activities is to make an inter-generational contribution to the cultural development of Eritrea and to its external perception.
The involvement of artists and art strate-gies in our initiative is essential because it underlines the ambition to formulate the interrelationships between socie-ty, environment and health on different levels of perception, making those trans-parent.
Integrative private initiatives, measures to create and endow values and the encou-ragement of an awareness of its own his-tory are an essential part of our projects. These projects are designed and carried out conjointly.

_Rapprochement toward Eritrea‘s modern
history through its musical expression. Mu-
sic accompanies the daily lives of Eritreans.
In particular, its history of independence is
being mirrored in it.
_Ethio Jazz is very popular among music
experts outside the mainstream, but is only
associated with Ethiopia. Some musicians
of this school of music are from Eritrea.
Both aspects are being complemented by
contemporary music from Eritrea.
_Interview with the older generation in
Eritrea: Oral history. The history of Eritrea
from colony to independence.

_Development of a TV format in cooperation
with Eritrean editors, actors and the Eritrean
population at large. Designed as a pilot, the
show would ideally establish itself as a local
Eritrean TV programme and could continue
to be produced by local filmmakers. It is
also planned to carry out movie screenings
in the countryside.
_’Documentary fiction’ informs the Eritrean
public about our interdisciplinary projects
and illustrates opportunities for artistic and
playful own-initiatives. The movie concept is
comprised of a mixture of facts and fiction
and aims at a cultural implementation of our
initiative. Eritrea itself is the protagonist.
Access to clean drinking water is a dai-ly challenge for the rural population in Eritrea.
Especially women and younger girls spend a majority of their time walking long distances in order to fetch relatively small volumes of drinking water.
Between November and April, thick wafts of fog from the Red Sea overlay the country up to the mountains every day for several hours.
By using a simple and practical techno-logy of ‘fog collectors’, the mineral-rich fog has become an alternative water source to the irregular and less yielding rain. Already existing fog collectors yiel-ded 140-240 litres of water per 40 m2 net and day.
As part of our search for new solutions to functionally and economically impro-ve the fog collectors, art initiatives and projects will be embedded. The goal is to involve the local population when imple-menting the project and to simultaneous-ly spread the knowledge regarding the function and use of fog collectors to the public.
_Further development of fog collectors,
with special attention to local conditions
_Elaborate research on actual conditions:
who needs water and when? Which quality
should the water have and for which purpo-
ses?
_Education and further training with re-
gards to the use of the collected water
(small gardens, drip irrigation)
_Searching for competitions with the aim to
connect and complement different projects,
e.g. use of eucalyptus trees as construction
material for fog collectors. The harvested
eucalyptus trees will be replaced by ano-
ther tree.
_The production of fog collectors should
take place in the countryside as much as
possible. Ideal would be a construction
from material with synthetic fibre yarn for
further processing in Eritrea.
_Reduction of the net size so that it can be
used by smaller households or a smaller
group of several persons. As part of this,
cooperation with schools should be encou-
raged.
