Traditionally, the procurement function and a procurement cellhave been viewed as an expense zone and thus a cost centre. However, in today’s dynamic and cut-throat cost competitiveenvironment, even this cell is capable of value adding and being anindirect profit centre. Procurement does not generate profits viaincreased revenues; rather, the profits in this case are measuredthrough the most commonly accepted measure of profit generationi.e. via reduced costs.
To accomplish this, the organization needs to have a clearunderstanding of both the costs that are required to run a specialprocurement cell as well as the value of benefits that can be derivedfrom its functioning.
In a large organization like Era, centralizing the procurement ofmajor items such as cement, steel, bitumen, major project itemsand capex items across all verticals can facilitate even furthersavings and ultimately contribute to enhancing the company’sprofits – something that is so important to survive in today’s sharplycompetitive environment.
While executing the procurement function following pointscan be kept in mind:
• Value for money - it should be carried out as cost effectivelyas possible
• Competitive tendering / bidding / request for quotes - unlessthere are convincing reasons to the contrary
• Research on various categories • Building information & data banks• Compliance with all statutory and legislative requirements • Consistency in all procurement activities – example contract
templates that can be adopted even if the physical locationsare far off and centralizing is not possible
• Imbibing fairness and making decisions transparent• Importance of balancing coerciveness in the procedure
whether to accept or reject with quality and establishing long standing relations
The challenge of transforming the procurement cell from a costcentre to a profit centre is an essential step. While it presents asubstantial challenge, the rewards make it worth the efforts. Thistransformation provides the opportunity to elevate the value-addedrole of procurement in an organization and will ultimately helps usachieve our goal.
Think savings & profits not costs

B. Hariharan, Jr Design Engineer, Era Building Systems for receiving the prestigiousgold medal along with the Master of Technology Degree in Structural Engineeringfrom SRM University.
E R A W O R L D
At Era, the month of September is always special as we celebrateour Foundation Day and induce energy and motivation among thegroup members. I was mildly surprised on being conferred theaward for “Employee of the Year -Systems” on this special day. Thevery first thought which struck my mind was, “How did thishappened?” I pondered over this and arrived at two conclusionswhich I would like to share with fellow members.
Patience pay offs
First it led me to appreciate the importance of virtues of beingpatient, continuous and guided hard work and teamwork pays.
I will be honest in mentioning that patience pays because I hadanticipated this award three years back on the basis of individualperformance. However, it did not happen then. During the threeyears, which followed I witnessed many ups and downs, nevertheless continued and focused only on my work and aimedfor achieving results in bigger projects. This actually paved the wayto even higher level of expectations especially as we were under theextraordinary guidance of the Chairman, who is also my rolemodel.
In addition to these, I tuned myself to work cohesively in a teamalong with my peers. Today, this award makes me feel moreresponsible and accountable to raise the bar and motivates me tofurther maintain the expectation of the enterprise from the systems.
Important recognition
Secondly, from enterprise’s perspective, this award was symbolicone, recognizing the significance of Systems and Back OfficeServices in the business.
In any company, the main focus is on people who are in production/ execution. While rewarding the systems and IT, recognition ofservice support, innovation and technology in business growth hasbeen accomplished. The message from the management has beenloud and clear. The services and systems is the backbone of thebusiness which facilitates the timely delivery of quality products. Notonly that, the award also demystifies the common notion thatproduction is the key area while the fact is that the services assistsfrontline people in improving their performance and efficiency byenabling them with effective tools, continuous support, fulfilling thestatutory requirements, analyzing and depicting the work in neutralmanner. The role of services in the Product life cycle which beginsfrom receiving the order and ends with product delivery is alsoinfallible.
In today’s competitive market any company can gain edge byoptimizing the use of this important vertical which assists in reducingthe cost, achieving the product quality and product delivery on time. The recognition of the services by the customers and otherstakeholders of the company, therefore, is a milestone.
Keeping these two findings in my mind, I would like to propose theHR and Management to encourage team work. Let us have anaddition to the categories of such special awards like “Best Team ofthe Year”.
I thank all my team members and seniors who extended theirsupport and guidance and hope further to get even better in thefuture.

Diwali is a festival of lights symbolizing the victory of righteousnessand the lifting of spiritual darkness. It also celebrates the victory ofgood over evil - and the glory of light. Literally, Diwali or ̀ Deepaawali’also means an `Array of Lamps’ i.e. Rows of diyas (Deep = Lamp,Vali =Array). Several significant mythological events are associatedwith this festival. Read on to find out more.
• Diwali commemorates Lord Rama's return to his kingdom Ayodhyaafter completing his 14-year exile.
• Diwali is also celebrated as the day when the demon Narakasura was defeated.
• Perhaps, the more significant spiritual meaning is the “awarenessof the inner light” beyond the body and mind. Diwali is alsobelieved to be the celebration of this inner light, the light whichoutshines all darkness (removes all obstacles and dispels allignorance) and leads to the awakening of the individual to one'strue self.
• For the Sikhs, Diwali is symbolic of the Sikh struggle for freedom.Diwali has a special significance for Sikhs as their sixth Guru, GuruHargobind Saheb reached the city of Amritsar, after being releasedby the Mughal Emperor Jehangir, from the Fort of Gwalior.
• Diwali has special significance for the Jains too. On this day,Sraman Bhagwan Mahavir achieved Nirvana (enlightenment).
While the story or legend behind Diwali varies, the essence is the same- to rejoice and eventually fathom the underlying reality of all things. And as we fast approach the festival for fun and revelry, pooja andtradition, wishing you and your family a very happy Diwali from the EraFamily!
Tips for a safe Diwali Diwali marks the triumph of good over evil and it is onefestival that we all eagerly look forward to. However, improper handling of fireworks could mar the celebrations.Follow these safety precautions which can go a long way in ensuring a safe Diwali.
• Light fireworks only outdoors.
• Remove all inflammable and combustible materialsfrom the area where you / family will be igniting fireworks.
• Always supervise the use of fireworks by children.
• Follow all safety precautions mentioned on the fireworks.
• Use an agarbathi to ignite fireworks. It provides safer distance between your hands and the fireworks.
• Avoid using matches and lighters.
• Keep a fire extinguisher or bucket of water nearby to extinguish any incipient fire.
• Keep burn ointments handy.
• Light only one firework at a time.
• Don’t hold firecrackers, bombs and flowerpots in your hand while lighting them.
• Don’t bend over them rather light the fireworks from the side.
• Move away quickly before they burst.
• Hold lighted sparklers away from the body.
• Avoid igniting aerial firework near an opening to a building.
• Discard used fireworks in a bucket of water.
• Wear close-fitting clothes of thick material instead of loose or flowing garments.
Wishing youHappyDiwali
