EQ Credit 4.1: Low-Emitting Materials: Adhesives and Sealants LEED-NC Credit: YES | UNSURE | NO Credit Intent This credit and EQ Credits 4.2, 4.3, and 4.4 aim to reduce the amount of indoor air contaminants that are odorous, irritating, and/or harmful to the comfort and wellbeing of the installers and building occupants by promoting use of low-emitting materials. Feasibility Credit 4.1 can be obtained in the GSB project, so long as any adhesives and sealants used in the building comply with specified criteria with regards to volatile organic compound (VOC) limit or VOC weight. Specific limits are outlined for each type of adhesive or sealant used in construction (such as indoor carpet adhesives, caulking, wood adhesives, etc.). Analysis For all credits 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, and 4.4, documentation created by the Sustainability Task Force has been used to award all 4 points. The Task Force states 1 , “Use of low-emitting materials reduces the quantity of indoor air contaminants that are odorous, irritating and/or harmful to the comfort and well-being of installers and occupants. Specify low-VOC (volatile organic compounds) levels in all adhesives and sealants, paints and coatings, carpet system, and composite wood and agrifiber products.” Based upon this documentation, it is assumed that the design team will follow through with the recommendations of the Task Force. Under each credit, two specific materials have been suggested that fulfill the requirements outlined in LEED-NC Version 2.2. For this credit, a wood flooring adhesive and carpet adhesive are included as examples.
