Isle of Axholme Central Ward Priorities POLICE

REPORT

St Andrews Church/St Andrews Ivy Hall/Fountain

Court, Epworth - Anti-social behaviour, Youths

causing annoyance and criminal damage, litter.

Reports are being received that the locations are being

frequented by youths and there has already been some

damage caused. The building is in a quiet area and thus is

attractive to youths congregating during the evening hours

and particularly at weekends. St Andrews Ivy Hall is

adjoining the car park, church, and play area and as such make it a particularly

favourable during evening hours. Neighbourhood staff and incident response officers make regular patrols at the

locations and any youths found behaving in a disorderly manner will be dealt with accordingly.

UPDATE; - North Lincs Council are going to be in the area again to engage with the young people and will advise

and encourage them to participate in activities on the Isle. North Lincs Council have engaged with youngsters about

their thoughts and feelings regarding youth activities on the Isle. They are taking away the comments for

consultation. It would be beneficial for the young people to get involved and seek alternative recreational activities.

If anyone wishes to become involved please contact any of the team detailed below.

We would also seek the co-operation of parents to be aware of where their children are frequenting and to

encourage them not to congregate in large numbers in areas such as this as this affects the community as a whole.

The youth club in Epworth does not allow the young people to come and go as they please when they attend the

youth club and any person found will be returned to the youth club and parents informed. This is a safety issue and

we would encourage this particularly with the dark nights upon us.

Anyone with any information or require any advice or guidance, please contact the Central Neighbourhood team by

e-mail;- [email protected] [email protected]

[email protected]

Or by telephone dial 101 or you can always pass information anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Countrywatch Issues Calls for service to areas of land both owned and used by the farming community have

occurred including offences of Criminal Damage, theft, poaching, off road bikes, trespassers on land with dogs.

Times vary throughout the 24 hour period. A considerable amount of work and liaison has been built between

Neighbourhood staff and the owners and staff working on land to engage them and to identify where offences and

offenders are committing these acts and routes they use.

UPDATE -: Levels have dropped but calls are being received and officers attend but not further prosecutions have

resulted. One recent court hearing was discontinued by the Crown Prosecution Service as someone did not wish

to be involved in the court process and was key to a prosecution; this is quite understandable but does cause and

issue in the judicial process. If at any time you become suspicious of any persons please telephone the police. It is

far better that we know at the time in order that we can make checks and also to forward onto surrounding police

areas as soon as possible, as it is quite usual for such people to frequent other areas during the course of their

activities. Just because the people you see appear to look like they are legitimate this may not be the case so

Humberside police do encourage local communities to report anything that on the face of it does not appear

normal.

Nuisance Bikes Motorised Bikes being ridden on land, without safety equipment and causing nuisance and

possibly committing road traffic offences. The areas of concern are Ashtree Close, the Park and Pavilion , Stool

Close Road, the old railway track, Belton. Young people are using bikes to cause nuisance and safety issues to both

residents and visitors to these areas. Times of occurrence vary but in the main are after the tea time period, but at

this point no particular persons have been identified. There are safety implications both to police and to the public

in stopping this type of behaviour but if anyone has any knowledge of where these bikes are being kept/stored then

please either telephone 101, Crimestoppers which is anonymous on 0800 555 111 or if any persons reside in North

Lincolnshire or any other housing association please contact them directly as they may be affecting their tenancy.

Road legal bikes are frequenting the Pavilion during times when users of the facilities are there. They are using the

car park as a race track and this not only is dangerous to pedestrians and other vehicles parked up but also to those

who behave in this manner. This is causing harassment, alarm and distress and there is a penalty to anyone found

conducting themselves in this manner. If you are or know of anyone behaving in this manner please contact the

Neighbourhood team as we wish to deter anyone causing or being involved in any accidents.

Pc Sally ROBERTS is taking a break from Epworth so please do not send any

Amateur Dramatics The Epworth Mowbray Players No.1

By Anthony Catherall

The Imperial Hall in Epworth’s Chapel Street, has over its lifetime seen many social events. None more popular it seems, than a period between 1948 & 1965 when Epworth locals where producing plays there under a new umbrella organisation and affiliated to; The National Operatic and Dramatic Association 1948 Before the war at Epworth amateur dramatics were running fairly successfully, there was the ‘Epworth Amateur Dramatic Society’ and another called the ‘No-Name Players’. Following the Second World War, the country was under the governments rationing scheme, it was an austere time and the community in Epworth were looking to liven up their social lives once more. Television although invented, was only available to the select few; probably no one in Epworth owned a set then. There was a very strong community feeling in most towns and villages and Epworth was among them, you could still leave doors unlocked without fear of unwanted intrusion. Shops were situated all over the place, supermarkets were unheard of and people shopped daily for their needs so people got to know each other much quickly than today. In 1948, a group of locals decided to resurrect a dramatic society and the word went out for people to join, many without any acting experience applied. It has to be said a lot were teachers, some were professionals, others not, it was a grand old mix that came together. So with zest, zeal and great enthusiasm, The Epworth Mowbray Players were formed. In December 1948 under the direction of Miss Gertrude Lees I.R.A.M their first production was “They Came to a City.” The first cast members were; Freda Matthews-Margaret Hutchingson-David L. Walster-Ella Dempster-Morris Butler-Dora Maxfield-Ian Shillito-Mary Housham & Jack Johnson.

Now & Then - Then & Now

No. 38 by Anthony Catherall This month and every month; see Epworth in bygone days and compare to today's images!

This month we celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of our Queen Elizabeth and like most towns and villages

celebrations will take place. Above we see Epworth in carnival mood, was this the Coronation festivities of King George V on 22 June 1911? I wonder if your eye is drawn quickly to the lone man, hands on hips standing in the middle of Albion Hill, this is often the case in a picture of this type where a road disappears into the distance.

There is so much happening in this happy picture, when Epworth was a very united community. See the older

man left front standing behind the then culvert on the High Street. Notice the Royal Enfield sign on the wall of Cawthorne's shop and also the advertising sign 'Cowman Clothiers 'further up right just to the left of the pitched roof. How many horses can you see? And can you count the flags? The Red Lion façade is void of a name, then it

was a hanging sign centre picture. In those far off days probably one hundred and one years ago the people celebrated everything, the last big event was the opening of the railway in 1905. Whatever, it was an excuse to interact with their neighbours and have fun. This picture is all about fun and enjoyment, and not a motor-car in

sight, happy Epworth days. Below a similar scene of the Market Place 15 February 2012.

I would like to send my condolences to all Ian Shillito's family on his recent passing. Ian helped me with information for

some parts of the series, he told me recently that he was looking forward to reading this article. Bless you Ian"

Preparations for Jubilee Week in School

and our 30th Anniversary

At the moment we are busy preparing for a special week of

celebration just before the June half term to mark both the

Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the school’s 30th Anniversary.

We are planning a Jubilee Street Party on Friday 1st June and

are hoping for fine weather so the whole school and special

guests can sit outside for a picnic lunch prepared by the

school kitchen. During the ceremonies we will be officially

opening our new Outdoor Learning area in an interior courtyard. When the school was built 30

years ago this area was planned to be a structured play area for Science and weather work. Now 30

years later the area will be used for outdoor learning as originally envisaged. The Town Council will

also be presenting the children with a commemoration Jubilee mug, a lovely souvenir to keep of the

occasion and we will have a 30th Birthday cake.

After school on Thursday 31st May we will be opening up our building for parents and the

community to view our Diamond Jubilee and School history timelines going around the school. The

Jubilee timeline will

showcase some of the

work of the children on

the 60 years of the

Queen’s reign while the

School’s timeline will have

a display of old photos,

extracts for our school log book and memories of

staff and former pupils. It

will remind us just how

much we have changed in

30 years. Education is so

different now!

With best wishes

The Epworth East West Martial Arts Team!

East West Martial Arts started in Epworth at the start of April at the Epworth Youth Centre on High

Street and already has 20 budding martial artists.

Pictured here are some of the Little Champions (4 - 6 year olds) and Juniors (7 - 12 year olds). With

branches in Armthorpe, Doncaster and Hull, the

Master Instructor Stuart Wilks who lives in Epworth, thought that the isle could do with more activities

like this.

"Our children's classes are all geared towards developing a young persons self esteem and confidence.

Getting children involved in our programme

makes a huge difference in their focus and well being and of course keeps them physically fit & healthy. All

of our students are given short and long

term goals and are encouraged along the way to attaining the different coloured belt levels. That being said

our main goal is to have fun and enjoy

the classes" said 6th Degree Black Belt Stuart Wilks.

East West Martial Arts also offers Bodyblitz classes, a fitness class aimed at adults who would like to get a

little fitter and lose some weight.

TRENTSIDE FEDERATION

– St Martin’s and West

Butterwick Church of

England Primary Schools –

School News As the Summer Term has progressed since

returning from the Easter break, both schools

have become increasingly focused on the

forthcoming Diamond Jubilee. Therefore, our

curriculum studies have included thinking about

’60 years of our Queen’s reign’. Pupils in Years

3 and 4 at St Martin’s have already produced

some stunning and highly informative timelines.

These were created as part of a home-school

learning project. Harry Watts and Ellis Clayforth produced particularly impressive timelines featuring local

historical milestones as well as national and global events, such as King George opening Keadby Bridge in

1916, the Humber Bridge opening in 1981, George Laming’s Smithy being built in Owston Ferry in 1859,

the first light bulb being invented in 1878 and Lego being patented in 1958 – a really interesting and

diverse collection of momentous occasions! We all learnt a lot from this project! In addition to this,

pupils are now working on designing their own commemorative coins and stamps linked to the art

curriculum as well as learning the National Anthem.

We are also looking forward to a visit

from the Chairman of West Butterwick’s

Parish Council Cllr Derek Hurst,

accompanied by Cllr Jackie Shadlock who

will generously present all pupils with a

commemorative Jubilee coin. Mr Hurst

and Miss Shadlock will then give a talk to

our own School Council on the role and

responsibilities of Parish Councillors.

Thinking ahead to July, we are rapidly heading towards the Olympics – London 2012. Both schools are

involved in an unusual project linked to The Olympics – a Christian based theatre group are visiting us in

July to present ‘Who Comes First?’ – a learning experience that promotes the Olympic and Paralympic

Values of respect, excellence, friendship, courage, determination, inspiration and equality. The children

will be considering these through story-telling, drama and music, leading on to them reflecting on an

athlete’s sense of purpose and how all of this relates to opportunities and challenges that they may face in

their own lives in the future.

In amongst all of this, the theme for our creative

curriculum this term is Olympic Robots and West

Butterwick has already been invaded by an alien

tripod fighting machine! This tripod stands 3 me-

tres high and has been designed and built by the

Junior pupils in Mr Cross’ class. Years 3,4,5 & 6 at

West Butterwick are studying H G Wells’ science-

fiction novel ‘War of the Worlds’. This has really

captured the pupils’ imaginations and they have not

only produced this ambitious large scale model, but

have their own ‘prototypes’ on a much smaller

scale. The educational aims of this were assem-

bling, joining and combining a range of materials as

well as using finishing techniques to strengthen and

improve the appearance of their product. We are

looking forward to parents and carers meeting our

‘Martian invader’ next week, when we invite them

in for an ICT Information Session. A small group

of Key Stage 2 pupils will be demonstrating the

new programmable equipment recently purchased. We are looking forward to ‘livening up the learning’

with these exciting resources!

How often do you use your electric drill?

I remember when first becoming a house owner being given an electric drill.

It seemed that I had become a man. I have to be honest though and say it is

more of an ornament than a daily tool. Apparently this is not my experience

alone, as a recent survey of electric drills states that of the estimated 18

million that are in domestic use in England most are barely used. It is esti-

mated that some are used for only 18-30 minutes in total! Mine hasn’t been

used much since I used it to drill through an electric cable and the bit end

melted and I was thrown off the step ladder! An experience I hope never to repeat.

For some church is like the electric drill, barely used, whereas for others it is not only a weekly, but

a daily experience. I see the people come into Wesley Memorial at Epworth on a daily basis to seek

quiet, peace, and pray.

At Jubilee weekend the average use of church will increase. At Wesley Memorial we will be part of

the BIG LUNCH on the Sunday having a faith meal together, and on the Monday afternoon holding a

celebratory tea party. Decorations will abound!

Fortunately on this occasion I do not anticipate using the drill. But in all seriousness I do have one,

as new, to a good home.

Rev David Leese, Wesley Manse, Epworth.

What an Achievement!

What an achievement! Sixty years as our monarch

and still going strong. Whether we are Royalists or

Republicans, HM Queen Elizabeth is a remarkable

lady. I have to admit to enjoying ‘royal’ occasions

with all the pomp and ceremony. So I was in my

element when she came to give out Maundy Money

to pensioners in Lincoln Cathedral a few years ago.

As a priest in the Church of England I have to

swear allegiance to Her Majesty (and the Bishop)

and their successors before ordination and every

time I move parish. I personally have never found

that a problem because I generally work with local

people rather than Royalty and Bishops.

What an achievement! The Olympic Stadia are

completed on time and the torch has started on its

journey of 8,000 miles round the UK. It comes to

this part of the world on 26th June. The torch

won’t come to the Isle but won’t be far away. The

torch relay is just a prelude to what we hope will

be a glittering Opening Ceremony and a festival of

many different kinds of sports – that is for the

sports fans!

What an achievement! Whether we are Royalists

or Republicans, Sports fans or not, God still finds it

in His heart to love us. Rev Timothy Buckley – Rector of The Belton Group of Parishes.

The playing field is a large well maintained field suitable for

football, hockey, cricket, outdoor exercise classes, archery

etc. If you are interested in organising clubs or classes on the

field please get in touch with us to discuss your plans. There

are sports changing rooms with showers in the pavilion and

good car parking on the site.

There is a well supported Bowls Club with an excellent green

on the field that always welcomes new players and no

experience is needed, so go along and have a go at a very

friendly, sociable game.

The Epworth and Isle of Axhlolme Detachment of the Army

Cadet Force have their home on the Playing Field and has

grown substantially since moving to this site.

The pavilion hosts weekly Zumba, Aerobics and Pilates classes

as well as Beavers, Cubs and Scout meetings; a popular club

for the over 55s and a well attended Bingo club. The Street

Beat Dance Academy have their Wednesday classes here but

there are still morning and afternoon times for anyone

wanting to hold classes or start clubs, coffee mornings etc.

The pavilion is an excellent venue for children’s parties, special

birthdays, graduations, weddings, christenings and funeral

wakes. There are different sizes of rooms for hire at

reasonable competitive rates. The hall is heated and air conditioned and there is a large conservatory overlooking the

bowls green

The Belton Playing Field Committee is currently looking for

new members to serve on it to help with running the facilities

and to bring new ideas for the future of the site. The Annual

General Meeting will be held in the pavilion on Tuesday, May

22nd at 7.00 pm and interested members of the public will be

very welcome, so please come along and give us your ideas

Having spent 48 years in journalism,

Roy Briggs has spent the last two years

of his retirement producing his own life

story which includes many of the

fascinating stories he covered during his

media career. Roy, 72, who lived in the Isle of Axholme at Low Burnham,

near Epworth, for eight years during the 1970’s, retired to

Scarborough in 2005 but he and his wife Joyce plan to

move back to the Crowle area to be closer to their family.

It was his granddaughter, Emily Briggs, 15 who lives at

Fieldside, Crowle, who designed the front cover of his

book featuring a cross with a blackbird perched on it.

Roy says: “I’m so proud of Emily for producing such an

eye-catching cover. It’s just what I wanted as it powerfully

illustrates how religion has played such a significant role

throughout my life.

“Emily was only 14 at the time and hopefully it will help her CV when she leaves school as she is hoping to

study art.”

The book entitled ‘Eve of Forgiveness: A Journalist’s Journey’ follows his life through almost half a century

as a professional writer and the author will make a £1 donation to Cancer Research UK from every copy

sold.

Roy, who originally hails from Rotherham, spent 28 years in news reporting followed by 20 years

specialising in horse racing - his long-time hobby.

As a teenager, finding himself trapped in an engineering course at College of which he hated every minute,

he was rescued by a blackbird which built a nest in the porch of his home.

This unusual nesting site transformed Roy’s life when featured in a local paper.

It was the magical moment he knew for certain what his future career should be.

Switching over to a commercial course in order to learn shorthand and typing, Roy studied hard and at 17

left college with all the qualifications he needed to land a job on ‘The Star’ as a junior reporter at the

Sheffield head office.

He spent eight years on the paper’s editorial staff before leaving to become a self employed freelance

journalist, and in 1974 moved to Doncaster from where he launched the Briggs News Agency which grew

into one of the most prolific and successful freelance businesses in the North, taking on three more

reporting staff to help serve provincial papers, the national dailies, TV and radio stations.

In 1984 the roving reporter sold his Doncaster agency and moved to Bridlington to set up East Yorkshire

Press Agency specialising in racing news and features which kept him busy for his final 20 years in

journalism.

A Journalist’s Journey embraces a wide variety of human interest stories ranging from the bizarre,

humorous and tragic, whilst his racing career saw the launch of a successful media campaign to expose a

scandal involving cruelty to ex-racehorses.

Looking back on his near half a century of writing, he rates his three year campaign to push racing’s rulers

into providing some form of ‘safety net’ to prevent former racehorses ending up as cruelty victims in the

wrong hands, as the highlight of his career.

The second part of his memoir carries an important message on forgiveness.

Roy disowned his father after he tried to cheat him of an inheritance from a relative of his late mother.

Over 30 years later a spiritual experience (“The word of The Lord came to me and I obeyed”) prompted

him to finally forgive. Within days a relative of his father died resulting in the writer receiving a second

legacy.

The book is available from: Spiritual Senses shop, Market Square, Crowle; on-line at the publisher's

website, www.Fast-print.net/bookshop or from the author direct on: 01723 503076 and email:

Dear readers,

Joining a motorway. Look well ahead and plan your approach early. Use your off-side wing mirror to help match your speed to that

of the traffic in the left-hand lane of the motorway when you join from a slip road.

Select the lane that allows you to merge most smoothly. Usually the right hand lane on the slip road as you will be able to see traffic on the motorway earlier and the traffic on the motorway will be able to see you on the slip road earlier.

Where necessary give a right indicator signal. Do it in time to allow for a reaction from other drivers on the main carriageway who may pull over into the adjacent lane, giving you the chance to merge smoothly. Plan your acceleration on the slip road, so that you don’t have to brake or accelerate further to join to traffic flow.

Constantly use your mirrors to check the main carriageway and other traffic around you and never commit to changing carrageways without considering a brief glance over your right shoulder. Difficult approaches.

When the motorway slip road rises up to join the main carriageway, your vision and anticipation maybe limited

so you have less time to judge the traffic flow before merging. To minimise this problem, avoid racing other vehicles up the slip road and stay back from the vehicle in front.

Always use the two-second rule when following another vehicle. On short slip roads you may have to be very decisive. That may mean you need to accelerate very firmly to achieve a safe merging speed in time.

Some slip roads have cross-hatchings to separate the lanes of traffic. Those with solid white surrounds can only be entered in an emergency. Leaving the motorway. Motorway junction signposts are usually positioned one

mile and half mile in advance. Use them to plan your

speed and to select a suitable lane position early. Junction countdown signs appear 300, 200 and 100

yards before each exit. Judge your exit speed carefully especially after driving for long periods at high speeds. Lift your vision up to

look further ahead and never be caught out by a short or sharply curving exit slip road. Use your mirrors as you leave the motorway, especially if you plan to take

the right-hand lane on a multi-lane exit slip road.

On a busy carriageway, it’s always worth taking a quick glance over your right shoulder to check for any driv-

ers trying to cut across from the faster lanes of the motorway to exit in one hazardous manoeuvre. This tactic is likely to be carried out at a dangerously high speed.

To be continued next month. Thank you to all our readers who have taken the Free

Public Assessment Drive. If you would like to take part

please contact me below.

If you are interested in the courses we offer, you’ll be able to find this information on the Institute of Ad-vanced Motorists website at www.iam.org.uk
