FISH CULTURE• The great demand for fish in our country encourages
businessmen to engage themselves in fish culture.
Fish culture become a profitable business in the
country today because of the availability of
fingerlings and fish feeds in the locality.
SELECTING THE KINDS OF FISH TO RAISE
•Different kinds of fish live in streams, rivers, lakes,
bays, and seas. Among the fish that can be raised in
the backyard are tilapia, mudfish, catfish, and other
freshwater.
SELECTING THE KINDS OF FISH TO RAISE
1. Carp or karpa
• carps are very prolific. they are quite strong and
can stir up mud and tear out the root of
vegetation. they prefer shallow bodies of water
for their habitats. they are bottom feeders,
feeding on insects, worms, shells and shrimps.

• This is a freshwater fish and can be raised
in a fishpond or open seas they are bright
and silvery. Fully grown milkfish ranges

5. Tilapia
• There are many species of tilapia, but the tilapia
nile species have been proven to be more
profitable to raise because it grows faster and
bigger than other varieties. Tilapia is a hardy
fish. It attains maturity at about four months
from fry stage . they can be harvested when
they are already three to four months old.
MANAGEMENT, CARE, AND CONSTRUCTION OF BACKYARD FISHPOND PROJECT
• Freshwater fish such as mudfish, tilapia, carp, and catfish
are plenty during rainy season and the early summer. A
backyard fish raiser should start his fishpond production
during summer. The success of the backyard fishpond will
depend on the following factors.
MANAGEMENT, CARE, AND CONSTRUCTION OF BACKYARD FISHPOND PROJECT
• Topography
• Type of soil
• Supply of fresh water
• Kinds of Fish to raise
FEEDING THE FISH
• Feed the fish in the morning with rice bran mixed with fish
food available in the agricultural store. The supplemental
food may be used if the natural food is not adequate in the
pond. Commonly used supplemental food are rice bran
(darak) and bread crumbs.
HARVESTING
• The tilapia is harvested after 3-4 months. At this time
the tilapia attains a marketable size of 80-100 grams.
It is best to harvest at dawn and in the morning. The
following are some methods of harvesting.
USE OF BAMBOO TRAP OR ENCLOSURE
• This is the least effective method of
harvesting. This is done by installing the
contraption by the gate. By splashing the
other end of the pond, the fish are scared
off to the trap. They are then scooped as
they accumulate in the enclosure.
SEINING OR USING GILL NET
•This is done by using the
proper mesh size so that only
the marketable size are
caught.
HARVESTING BY DRAINING
• This the most common method of
harvesting fish. While the pond is slowly
drained of water the fish accumulate in the
catching pond. With the use of the scoop
net, the fish are collected.
•Research for the following:
1. What is Ornamental fish?
2. What are the kinds of Ornamental fish?
3. What are the foods for Ornamental fish?
