The first Echo Park Community Festival washeld on the July weekend when the annual LotusFestival is usually scheduled.

The well-known Lotus Festival has been heldalmost yearly at Echo Park lake since 1972. In thelate 1970s and late 1980s budget cuts put the city-run festival on hold a few times. This year, however,is the first time that the community of Echo Parkhas held its own replacement for the cancelledAsian/Pacific-themed festival. The sponsorship

changed from the Los Angeles Department ofRecreation and Parks to the Echo Park Chamber ofCommerce, who took on thechallenge of mounting the festivalwith a considerably smaller budget, less experience and a shorter time-frame than Recreation and Parksenjoyed.

For festival-goers, the two-dayCommunity Festival was great fun. There may not have been dragon

boat races or lotusflowers, but there was

plenty to see and do. Visitors arriving atthe park found dozens of tented boothsoffering a wide variety of food anddrink. Round tables and folding chairsset up at the north-east end of the lakemade a welcome spot to eat under thetrees.

Entertainment on the main stage, with the pump house behind it, wasvaried, exuberant and very loud. Whatmore could one want? Knick-knacks

and souvenirs were sold along the shore, facing thelittle bay where the lotus used to bloom. Visitorslined up at the boathouse to hire its colorful pedalboats and enjoy the cool breezes out on the 6-acrelake. There was even an artificial rock climbing wallfor the children. And Sunday night hordes of people

In a cactus-ringed corral three patient horsesstand beneath a tree, partly in and partly out ofthe morning sun. A visitor takes the dirt path thatwinds from a trail through the summers dead, brown grass to the corrals gate. The horsesignore the person outside the metal fence until abag rustles. Ears up, they amble across topeacefully accept a chunk of apple pushedthrough the chain link. Theres a little tailswishing, some gentle pushing of one another, but theyre well-fed and content to share.

With bales of straw piled nearby and a coupleof small, dusty sheds by the fence, its

unexpected to find this rural scene only two and ahalf miles from Los Angeles City Hall.

Part of Echo Parks charm is that horses arestill legally kept on a few city lots that back up toElysian Park. Above the Golden State freeway andin the shade of a water tower a few yards from awell-used park fire trail, these huge, gracefulcreatures delight children and horse lovers.

The horses morning visitor strolls past thecorrals in Elysian Park hearing the hum of the

freeway below in the background. The engines ofthe vehicles on the noisy freeway are stillmeasured in horsepower while, on the other sideof the trail, actual horses, one of the Westsearliest forms of transportation, quietly continueto ignore their competition.

Forget about the hanging fern baskets. Forgetabout the stained glass windows and faux Tiffany

lamps. In fact, put all of your previous notions aboutthe two words, "wine bar", aside as you make a dashfor City Sip Los Angeles.

Tucked into a narrow storefront, on a not yet glam-orous stretch of Sunset Boulevard in Echo Park, CitySip Los Angeles has brazenly tossed down the gobletwhere few wine bars have hardly ever dared to tread. At City Sip, a glass of wine is not simply an accompa-niment to a full steak dinner, or an excuse to show offyour own connoisseurship to a group of lesser mortals,or an attempt to replicate what has been done beforein this establishment genre. Instead, City Sip refreshesand updates the entire "wine bar" concept. And I, for

one, am happy to see and partake in its resur-rection.

For one thing, it's not all about wine. There are six or seven hand-crafted beers toselect from off the drink menu too. But, fromthe stunning black, red and white full backwall painting depicting a cascade of wine bottlesby local artist John Michael Hull, to the gallery ofnine featured wines all along the right-hand side ofthe room, each bottle placed reverently in its ownniche and lit like a fine sculpture, to the striking red14 foot long bar, you instantly realize this is a winebar for the early, urban 21st century.

The vision for City Sip belongs to self-described "Wine Enthusiast" and Proprietor, NicoleDaddio, who lives just up the street herself. Nicole'spassion for wine, an outgrowth from her training as asommelier, and love of the neighborhood, drove her toopen City Sip primarily, as the motto of the bar pro-claims, to provide, "Wine for the People". This meansthat you do not go to City Sip to indulge in the latestvintage of Chateau Lafitte Rothschild or Petrus. In-stead, City Sip concentrates and selects its wine offer-ings based on what tastes good and remains afford-able.

Daddio has nurtured relationships with 8 to 10

wine dealers who present their best finds to her. As aresult, as you study the wine menu, you are taken on atour of most of the best grape growing regions of theworld. Naturally, that starts with California, and youwill find unusual offerings from the Napa Valley, SantaBarbara and Central Coast. But it also means Italy,Spain and Portugal, France and Argentina, Austria andNew Zealand, South Africa and the Columbia Valley in

Washington State. On the other hand, if the large andvaried selection of wines by the glass intimidates you

at first, another fine way to break into the menu is toorder one of the 9 different flights of wine, preselectedfor their complementary qualities, and consisting of 3separate 2 ounce pours. Daddio is not interested in thewine growing region, so much as she is in the winetasting results, and whether or not she can offer you aglass at a price that leaves you without that feeling likeyou've just been mugged for your wallet.

On my visit to City Sip, I experimented with wine-makers and/or varietals I had never seen or tried be-fore. As a result, I made one luscious, interesting dis-covery after another. This, in fact, is what sets City Sipapart from your average drinking establishment of any

kind. Regardless of how little or how much youknow about wine when you arrive, you will knowmore by the time you leave and the learningcurve will have been fun and effortless.

Luckily for me and many other patrons, Nicoleanticipated the need to offer some food choices

along with the wine quaffing experience. So, asyou sip or gulp along, you can also order from six

different charcuterie plates or sixteen differentcheeses. Offerings are prepared and presented as ifyou had ordered appetizers in a four star dining estab-

lishment further west down Sunset Boulevard. Dur-ing the course of my several hours spent

perched on a high-backed bar stool at City Sip,there was a steady, bustling neighborhood feeling tothe place.

Some people arrived solo, some people arrivedwith a group of friends to sit at one of the tables in thefront or back of the bar, some people stopped by totake advantage of the retail effort, which allows you tobuy a bottle or two to take home or to that dinnerparty you were invited to. There are also wine educa-tion classes offered every Tuesday night from 7:00PMto 9:00PM, at $50.00 per class, per person, with reser-vations required and upcoming events posted on achalkboard above the bar. Oh, and if you are feeling

thirsty on a Sunday evening, you can swing by City Sipand take advantage of a real economic stimulus plan,one-half off the price of all open bottles of wine by theglass after 9:00PM.

City Sip is located at 2150 Sunset Boulevard. Youcan phone for further information on upcoming eventsor wine classes at 213-483-WINE or visit City Sip onthe web at CITYSIPLA.com.

A few years ago Angelino Heights residents landscaped the little traffic island in the center of theMarion Avenue/Kensington Road intersection with flowers, plants and a bench. Its a pleasantcommunity spot right in front of a long-established store, Bobs Market. And on a hot Saturday in Julyit was a great location for the residents to stage a fundraising plant and antique sale.

Money is being raised for another garden spot in the neighborhoodthe Kensington steps.

Neighbors beautified the stairway between Kensington and Sunset Boulevard earlier this year withan assortment of flowers and shrubs. Buckets and hoses have kept the plants watered but permanentirrigation is the goal, according to the projects organizers Martha Delgado and Patti Good.

WOW summer has come to Central City ActionCommittee. Some of you might have already seenus along the streets. We are doing clean ups, graffitiremoval and a few murals. There are 35 kidsworking this summer. It is quite a task to schedulethem each day. Maryanne and Sam are constantlyworking on the schedules. Me, I just keep track oftheir hours and make sure they get paid. We havetwo additional staff Alexis Rivera and Angelica Bear(Alfreds wife), helping with the supervision of thesekids. One group starts at 6 am and works with ourgraffiti staff. Another crew starts at 8 am and works4 hours painting poles, parking meters, cleaningdebris from street and whatever else is deemednecessary. The third crew has been working on

murals along Beverly Blvd. Luckily they have founda shady spot to paint. Each week the crews rotateso it does not get too bored and also so they can beexposed to the different projects.

Oh, I forgot, I have a crew--Gloss Glorious Group--Natalie, Yonathon and Lynnette. The three aretrying to get me organized. They also have beentrained to do data entry on the 311 system. Wehave to record each and every square foot of graffitiremoved within our boundaries. Believe me it is alot of data entry. These kids help me when there aretwenty people coming in and out of my office askingfor help. Probably this is the first month that we areup to date with entering the graffiti requests. Along

the way, I teach them some basics on data basesystems and how to take apart and put backtogether computers.

I feel the best part of the summer program iswhen the kids (some are not young kids, but youngadults) get paid. A few of the kids earned over$300 last pay period. With this money they are ableto purchase the little extras oftentimes needed. Some give money to their parents, others buy new

clothes. Some buy X-boxes, some buy food, somebuy make up, and some treat their families todinner. The looks on their faces when they get paidare unbelievable.

Besides working, we plan a trip a week. First tripwas to Hansen Dam. We put a sign on the doorGone Fishing and off we were to spend somequality time swimming. Sam, Maryanne and I allwent along on this trip. Last week they went to thebeach. Sam gets all the fun jobs. A camping trip isplanned the last week of July up at Silverwood. If allthe kids go we will have to take a big bus. Some of

the older kids are forfeiting going on trips as theyneed the money for college. Then again, if the tripsounds interesting, they can make the decision togo or not to go.

Summer time, lazy time, swim time, play time, eating ice cream time, baseball time, reading bookstime and whatever else time comes along, you cancount on us to be eager participants.
