• Forest ecosystems provide shelter, livelihoods, water, fuel and food security for more than 2 billion people.

• Fisheries supply 15% of the animal protein in our diets, rising to more than 50% in many of the least developed countries in Africa and Asia.

• Marine ecosystems support more than 660 million jobs globally.

• Global Freshwater demand is projected to exceed current supply by more than 40% by 2030. However, 786 million people still don’t have a safe, clean water supply.

• The estimated cost of environmental damage globally in 2008 was USD 6.6 trillion – equivalent to 11% of global GDP

• Indigenous peoples constitute approximately 5% of the world’s population, they make up 15% of the world’s poor and one third of the world’s extremely poor
