January 7, 2018 The Epiphany of the Lord

MASS SCHEDULE Saturday Vigil: 5:00 PM

12:00 Noon & 7:00 PM Daily:

Wednesdays & Fridays - 7:15 AM & 9:30 AM

THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD

Traditionally in the ancient days of our Faith, the Epiphany celebrated 3 events: the visit of the Magi; the Wedding Feast of Cana; and the Baptism of the Lord. In present times we celebrate the visit of the Magi today as the Epiphany, we recognize the Wedding Feast of Cana during the week, and the Baptism of the Lord next Sunday. Therefore, we have a week of Epiphanies. What is an Epiphany? The dictionary defines it as: an appearance or manifestation, especially of a deity; a sudden, intuitive perception of or insight into the reality or essential meaning of something, usually initiated by some simple, homely, or commonplace occurrence or experience; and a Christian festival commemorating the manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles in the persons of the Magi. This is what these epiphanies of our Lord are, an insight into the reality of who Jesus is and the revealing of God through Jesus by simple common occurrences and experiences. The Magi who follow the signs in the heavens, follow the star and are revealed the humble birth of our God as human. They recognize the God of all coming as a human child into our hands. The Wedding Feast at Cana reveals Jesus’ first public miracle at a wedding and if we study the depths of this occurrence, we see the foreshadowing of His wedding with us. The Baptism shows us how, although sinless, he undergoes a baptism of repentance for sins, again uniting himself with our sinfulness in order to bring us home forever to heaven. These Epiphanies give us a window in which to see the beauty of our God made man, uniting with us to save us from sins and bring us home, in the common occurrences of everyday life: birth; marriage; and washing clean. These Epiphanies make our God real and tangible for us and they help us see the beauty of God as one of us and with us. Jesus revealed the beauty of God to us in common experiences. These 3 Epiphanies are the three we celebrate, but there were many: each miracle and teaching was an Epiphany. We as Christians are called to do the same. We must look at our lives and ask: how are we revealing Jesus and all that God is about in our everyday common occurrences of life? In the home, at work, in our chores, in our daily encounters, in traffic, at the store, with our spouse, with our children, and in all the events of life? Let us go forth in this New Year and be epiphanies, revealing God to the world in the common everyday life, so that people will know the beauty and love of our God. On January 22, it will be 45 years of legalized abortions, a sad situation in America and throughout the world. Many people will be traveling to Washington D.C. to March and show our government that we want this tragedy to change. Many people are unable to go to the March due to work, or health. As we have done the last few years, there will be Holy Hours and Masses throughout the day for those who do not go to the March. There was much confusion this year, as the first reports coming from pro-life office said the March would be on the actual day of January 22, but we found out later that the March is actually January 19. The schedule will be: January 19 - 5:30 AM – Mass and blessing for those going to the March. January 22 - the actual date of legalized abortion. 9:30 AM Mass. Adoration until 7:00 PM Mass. 11:00 AM – Holy Hour – including Rosary and Divine Mercy Chaplet. 12:00 noon – Mass 6:20 PM–Rosary as usual on Mondays. 7:00 PM - Mass

“THAT MAN IS YOU” COMING THIS

JANUARY 2018 Join us as we kick off – The Unveiling

of Love – that enables men to take the next step in male leadership. By attaining clarity of thought and developing integrity of action regarding the Church’s vision of love and marriage, men are able to transform their homes into the foundation for a new springtime of Christianity. “That Man Is You does a tremendous job of setting men on fire with courage and zeal that come from being sons of God.” (Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. CAP., Archdiocese of Philadelphia) Join us as we begin the new spring series on Saturday January 13th 2018 at 7:00 AM in the Lourdes Center of St. Bernadette Parish, 245 Azalea Drive, Monroeville PA 15146, for 13 weeks. For more information contact Bill White at [email protected] or (412.913.4729); Santos Hernandez [email protected] or (412.427.2302).

ADORATION

How beautifully St. Faustina describes her long, silent “talks” with the Lord:

Silence is so powerful a language that it reaches the throne of the living God, Silence is His language, though

secret, yet living and powerful . In silence I tell You everything, Lord, because the Language of love is without

words. Diary of St. Faustina

“The greatest love story of all time is contained in a tiny white

host.” Bishop Fulton J. Sheen

“In that little Host is the solution to all the problems of the world.”

Pope St. John Paul II

St. Bernadette School Mission Statement St. Bernadette Catholic School is a Roman Catholic elementary school serving students in Pre-K through Grade 8. Inspired in faith and rooted in Gospel values, St. Bernadette, as a ministry of the Diocese of Pittsburgh, is dedicated to excellence in Catholic education. In partnership with each family, neighboring parish and faith community, our principal, faculty and staff endeavor to instill in each child a life-long commitment to learning, service to others and trust in God. St Bernadette’s provides the foundation for each child to grow in spiritual development, wisdom, faith and integrity in order to prepare them to meet any future challenges.

SACRAMENTAL VISITS TO THE HOMEBOUND Eucharistic Ministers and Parish Staff are available to take Communion to the homebound. Just call Deacon Mike Kelly at 412.373.0050 or email him at [email protected]

Seeking St. Bernadette Catholic School Alumni The School Advisory Committee currently is working on compiling a database of all St. Bernadette School alumni from as far back as possible. The committee is utilizing many avenues for research, but the good old fashioned feature of folks sharing information would be most appreciated. As all schools have active and supportive alumni groups, we certainly would like to provide that support in various capacities to current students. Please email Lisa Genton at [email protected]

or call/text Stephanie Forrest at (860) 461-8818 with your

name, mailing address, phone number, email address, and

years of attendance. Thank You in advance for any help

you can lend to this pursuit.

MONTHLY COMMEMORATIVE CELEBRATION The next MCC Liturgy will be held on Sunday, January 28,

2018 at Noon Mass Intention requests for January 28 should be returned by January 22 to the school office.
