Alfa Acciai group comprises several well-established companies specialized

in various areas of the production of steels for reinforced concrete, a

guarantee of products and services qualifying the Brescia-based group as an

excellent business partner in a wide range of sectors, first and foremost in building

construction.

Being involved in the entire steel production chain, with an integrated system

upstream and downstream of the parent company, the Alfa Acciai group is able

to meet its customers’ operating requirements to the full and guarantee a superior

standard of quality at all stages of the production process.

1. alfa acciai Group

ALFA ACCIAI, the Brescia-based

parent company, is one of the largest

eAf steel mills in italy. there are a steel

shop department with 2 eAf (electric

arc furnaces), 2 lf (ladle furnaces)

and 2 continuous casting machines (10

lines). the hot rolling department is

equipped with 3 rolling mills for rebars,

coils and wired rod; the cold rolling one

with 12 cold rolling mills 5 welded mesh

machines.

ACCIAIERIA DI SICILIA, is the only

steel mill operating in Sicily, based in

catania. High production capacity, state-

of-the-art technology and a wide range

of products have earned the company

a good position in the european steel

making industry and help it make good

use of its strategic location for serving

south Mediterranean markets.

this ePd is specifically about steel

bars and coils for concrete produced in

catania plant.

ThySSEN SONNENBERg RECyCLINg, in Bottrop, germany, is run

as a joint venture and has become one

of world’s leading companies producing

and selling ferrous and non-ferrous scrap

(www.tsr.eu).

laying of reinforcing steel for all kinds

of structural work, for roads, railway,

and maritime infrastructures, as well as

public, industrial and civil buildings. the

scraps. the homogeneous and repeatable mechanical

features of steel guarantee excellent performance in any

type of construction and geographical area, since they

have high ductility.

ePd reference products have a chemical composition in

compliance with national regulation of destination coun-

tries where they are sent. in general, the main materials

of the final product are: iron > 96%; alloy elements (e.g.

manganese, silicon, carbon) 2% c.a.; other elements (e.g..

copper, nickel, chromium), complementary to 100%.

transport to the customers (general market average). distances estimated considering the transported quantities and the distances from catania's plant to the client.

from catania (in the South of italy) final products are delivered to many national (73% of the total sold product) and international areas such as Algeria (around 25%), Malta and tunisia.

the means of transport used to deliver steel bars and coils are truck and freight ship. on average, finished product is transported for 78 km by road and 313 km by ship.

9. additional informationother environmental characteristics of acciaierie di sicilia plant are:

1. Acciaierie di Sicilia reinforcing steel in bars and coils production capacity is around

500,000 t per year. the main peculiarity is that ferrous scrap is mainly collected from

Sicily (about 90%).

2. in the recent years Acciaierie di Sicilia has committed to improve the environmental

performance of its production process with different measures, installing:

- a new off-gas filtering system in August 2010;

- a new suction hood, integrated with the installation of activated carbon input in feb-

ruary 2012.

Both systems guarantee enhanced environmental performance in terms of atmospher-

ic emissions: this new system has a filtering surface of 12,000 m2 and, with the inno-

vative impulse cleaning system, can achieve minimal emission levels, well below the

legal threshold.

3. Acciaierie di Sicilia has installed radiometric monitoring instruments (that use the

best available technology) to prevent radioactive-contaminated material or sources,

dispersed in the scrap or other materials, entering the factory.

the instruments are strategically positioned to monitor the entry of all the materials

used in the melting cycle and all other incoming materials. As well as monitoring of

the material on all incoming vehicles, the company carries out continuous in-process

monitoring by means of spectrometric analyses of the heat samples, thus guaranteeing

the absence of radiation contamination of the steel.

in accordance with general ePditaly requirements, the lcA study used specific, gener-

ic and other generic data. this last data are contributing to the environmental indicators

less than 10%.
