2012-2013 EEASC Board Members
From the Green Desk: December 2012
What a wonderful volunteer board of directors and partners we have! I have always known this, but it has proved even more evident for me this past year. Having undergone a drastic career change to become a licensed financial advisor, I now “own” my office and help people with retirement, education, and asset allocations, which is exciting, challenging, and time consuming.
That said, the hours of tireless work your board and other EEASC supporters have put in this past year as a result of my self-directed “AWOL” have been unbelievable. Your board has stepped in and up, to help continue our goals toward being the best environmental or-ganization statewide and beyond. They pulled together and orches-trated budgets, conferences, website changes, special grants and projects, and SC Wild programs.
Here is a “snapshot” of some current happenings: Creating a family friendly Annual Conference: June 14-16 -
Back at awesome Camp St. Christopher with a twist! SEEA (Southeast Environmental Education Association, made up of nine SE states) is sending some of their board and members to our conference. What a great chance to show off a bit of South Caro-lina and EEASC!
Serving as fiscal agent for DHEC’s Champion of the Environ-ment program
Supporting the SC WILD program statewide – including facilitator and educator trainings, as well as providing workshop materials
Offering EEASC mini grants Creating a state Environmental Education Literacy Plan to
guide our actions Embarking on a membership drive to make us stronger and bet-
ter Receiving SEEA grant funds to assist with statewide EE grants
and the EE Literacy Plan Reviewing and ranking SEEA grant proposals from other states Offering Regional workshops and conferences for educators
Please share with your friends and family what’s happening with your EEASC. Participate in our regional and sectional events, bring your family to the annual conference, meet wonderful like-minded people, and enjoy the great outdoors that our “mountains to the sea” state af-fords us.
EEASC is making a positive difference in the lives of our citizens. Join us, won’t you? There are many ways to share your skills and help us make the Palmetto state a better place to live, work, play and green the educational fields. See you at the conference!

Interpretive Signs at Price House Nature Trail
Grant funding was sought from the Spartanburg Soil & Water Conservation District and the Environmental Edu-cation Association of South Carolina to fund interpretive signs on the nature trail at Price House located in Wood-ruff, SC. Funding would specifically go to the purchase of building materials, labor, and installation costs for the signs. The signs were built by Tim Sherbert in October 2012. The signs are made from treated wood and plexi-glass and are approximately 6’ tall. They are designed for in-formation to be easily changed out (laminated paper is tacked up and replaced sea-sonally or otherwise, depending on the needs of Price House staff). Once completed, signs were stored in the slave cabin located on Price House grounds until installation could take place. Spartanburg Day School’s Interact Club members Campbell Caretto, Rainsford Reel, and Chi Zhang, under the supervision of club sponsor, Jack MacMullan, along with
Woodruff High School’s National Art Honor Society member Heidin Espinal volunteered to assist with the sign installation. The group met at Price House in December 2012 armed with post hole diggers and concrete and installed all 6 signs at stra-tegic points along the nature trail. The work was completed in less than two hours, and the students were all treated to pizza afterwards to thank them for their hard work on a cold Saturday morning. The informative signs were written by Jes Sdao, with guidance and assistance from Zac Cunningham, director of Price House and Walnut Grove Plantation. Sign topics included Welcome to the Nature
Trail, Agricultural History of the Land, Forestry Succession, Wildlife along the Trail, World War II Plane Crash, and Cotton & Erosion. The goal of each sign is to tie together the natural environment with hu-man impact, and to provide visitors to the trail some insight into the history of the land. Price House is becoming a natural history destina-tion, and it’s imperative that visitors to the site and nature trail are able to understand how closely we are tied to our environment. To con-tinue the project, Jes and Zac will partner to create new signs and up-date existing signs as needed.
The Awards Committee is seeking individuals or groups/organizations who have contributed significantly to educating South Carolinians in the importance of environmental concerns.
All award winners will be honored during our Annual Conference at Pleasant Ridge Camp & Retreat Center, June 14-16, 2013, and will
re- ceive a nice plaque, a 4-year EEASC membership, and FREE Confer-ence registration.
