Awards 2018

Entry fees

An early bird rate of £100 + vat per category is available for projects which submit and pay the fee prior to 20 December 2017.

The entry fee, per category, for projects submitted after 20 December 2017 will be £150 + vat. Deadline for entries at full fee will be 15 March.

Awards Criteria

■ Any civil engineering project, stand-alone element of a project, team activity or education/ training initiative may be entered for an award. All awards in the small, medium and large project categories MUST be located within the ICE West Midlands geographical region(Herefordshire,Shropshire,Staffordshire,Warwickshire,WestMidlandsandWorcestershire).

■ Projects submitted for awards must have been substantially completed during the 2017 calendar year. The submitting organisation should decide in which year the project has madethemostsignificantimpactandenteraccordingly.

■ In the case of longer-term projects (stretching over more than one calendar year), it may be appropriate to enter a stand-alone element of a project into an appropriate category in differentawardsessions.

The project may be promoted by any sector of the profession, and it may cover studies, research,development,design,projectmanagement,financialmanagement,construction,maintenance or operation of schemes or any combination of the above.

The cost of all projects entered is not part of the judging process.

Please clearly state on the application form the category(ies) into which you wish to enter your project.

Project Awards Categories

Submissions may be made in any of the following categories:

Sustainability AwardFor projects which can demonstrate outstanding sustainability.

Innovation AwardFor projects which can demonstrate innovative techniques.

Heritage AwardFor projects which help contribute to the preservation of our heritage.

Small Project AwardFor projects up to £750k which can demonstrate excellent techniques.

Medium Project AwardFor projects between £750k and £10 million which can demonstrate excellent techniques

Large Project AwardFor projects over £10 million which can demonstrate excellent techniques.

Communication AwardFor projects which demonstrate excellence in local community engagement which goes above and beyond business as usual.

Geotechnical AwardThis will be awarded to projects or innovative geotechnical solutions delivered in the ICE West Midlands area.

Team Achievement AwardNominations are invited from teams working in operations, construction, design (or any combination) involvingthedeliveryofcivilengineeringrelatedpractice,andwhichhasdemonstratedasignificantcontribution to society. A clear demonstration of team working must be made clear in any submission highlighting the successes of the team.

The team will have been/must be located in the geographical area of the West Midlands however the subject/content of the nomination may be located anywhere in the West Midlands or the world. It should be absolutely clear that these team members have been instrumental in the successful delivery of the project.

Education and Inspiration Award - organisation For an organiation which has made a substantial contribution to civil engineering related training or education in the West Midlands region.

Studies & Research Award For a research project where conceptual ideas have been developed through study and research and incorporated into practical solutions and recommendations.The research could have been instigated to solve an industry problem or challenge and has potentially led to an output that has changed a product, method of working, or a design approach.

Volunteer AwardThis will be awarded to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the promotion of civil engineering in the West Midlands region.

Young Achiever AwardThis award will recognise the outstanding achievement of a person, aged 30 years, or under, who is employed within the civil engineering industry and lives or works in the West Midlands.

These awards have no entry fee and can be submitted via self, or third-party nomination.

People Awards

Nominations for People Awards should be submitted by completing the relevant People Awards section of the application form.

Engineering Achievement Award- IndividualFor a civil engineer who has lived, or worked in the West Midlands during the last 200 years andwhohasmadeasignificantcontributiontosocietyandwhoseworkhastransformedlives.

Engineering Achievement Award - Project For a West Midlands project, constructed during the last 200 years, which has made a significantcontributiontosocietyandtransformedlives.

Shaping the Future Award - ProjectForaWestMidlandsprojectwhichwillplayasignificantroleinsafeguardingsocietyforthefuture.

Shaping the Future Award - IndividualThis will be awarded to an individual living or working in the West Midlands, who through innovation or challenging existing practices has contributed to shaping the future of Civil Engineering.

ICE 200 Special Bicentenary Awards

These awards have no entry fee and can be submitted via self, or third-party nomination.

Nominations for ICE 200 Awards should be submitted by completing the relevant ICE 200 Awards section of the application form.

Awards Judging

The Judges The judging panel, chaired by a senior member of the profession, will comprise civil engineers and other professionals.

Judging CriteriaJudges will consider the entry submission against the following criteria, so entrants are advised to sub-divide their submission and provide evidence accordingly. It should be noted that the submission should not be presented in a series of sub-headings relating to the sections below, but as a cohesive readable document.

Quality and clarity of submissionHas the submission been presented in accordance with the competition requirements, is it a cohesive document and is it professionally presented?

Innovation• Has the client/researcher engaged with an innovative proposal and encouraged innovative

behaviours?• Has the designer employed innovative design solutions and techniques?• Has the executor (usually contractor) sought innovative approaches to the execution?• Do any of the above contribute to the improvement of the civil engineering fund of

knowledge?• Have new construction or installation techniques, products and service improvements been

used?• What was the process for continuing to strive to improve?

Sustainability• Has the client considered sustainability as one of the key deliverables for the project and

required sustainability to be incorporated at every stage of the project by the all members of the project design/delivery team?

• Has the designer developed the design using best practice and/or innovative sustainable solutions?

• Has the executor managed his execution in a sustainable manner using best practice and/or innovative sustainable solutions?

• How does the project contribute to the three main elements of sustainability; social, economic andenvironmentalbenefits?

• Has the project used any sustainability assessment framework (e.g. CEEQUAL, BREEAM) to inform the sustainable design of the project?

Planning and communication• Have the considerations/issues of stakeholders been addressed and how have they been

incorporated into the project?• What was the desired outcome and how was this is planned, communicated and achieved?• Whenconflictoccurred,howwasthismanagedsuccessfully?• Safety (excluding Studies & Research).• How has the executor demonstrated adherence to CDM in its practices?• Is there evidence of Occupational Health planning for the workforce?

Resource management• How did the leader manage the team and ensure that the right people are in the right

Project Awards Rules of Entry

1. The submission must include electronic versions of items 1-5 below:

■ Completed entry form and full payment of £100 (early bird) or £150 (full price) fee (link to on-line payment is published in the Entry Form).

■ A summary, not exceeding 500 words, comprising a 150-word introduction which describes the project and continues with an explanation of why the project should be deemed to be oneofexcellenceandprecisereasonswhyithasbeenenteredforaspecificcategory.Anyspecial features should be highlighted and attention drawn to aspects considered relevant for assessment.

2. The 150-word introduction will be reproduced in pre-event press releases, Birmingham Post coverage and the Awards brochure.

3. A maximum of six images of the project. The images should be in high resolution .jpg or .eps format (no less than 300dpi) and must not be embedded, nor contain any text or dates. One of the images will be used in the Awards Brochure and media publicity.

4. A project location plan.

5. Additionally, entries may be augmented by up to two drawings to illustrate important features of the project.

7. Each participating company/organisation associated with any successful entry and listed on theentryformwillreceiveacertificate,whiletheleadcompany/organisationwillalsoreceivea glass trophy award.

8. The judges have absolute discretion to reject any entry which does not comply with the requirements of the rules, or withhold any award from any entry - there can be no recourse againstthemorthesponsor.Thejudges’decisionshallbeabsolute,finalandbindingonallentries.

10. All computer generated and written material, drawings, plans and photographs submitted as part of an entry shall be the property of the Institution of Civil Engineers.

11. There is an opportunity for entrants to display one promotional pull-up banner in the pre-dinner drinks reception area.

12. Entries must be e mailed to [email protected] by 5.00 pm on early bird deadline of 20 December 2017 or 5.00 pm on Friday 15 March 2018.

13. Award winners will be entitled to use the ICE Award Winner logo to publicise theirsuccess.
