Enjoy Learning About ArtArts education is the cornerstone of the Decatur Area Arts Council’s pro-grams, from the PASS program to gallery field trips to classes. We offer lots of terrific arts education experiences for ages two years and up.

Fall class participants turned out some great art. They created edible sculp-tures, silk scarves, acrylic landscapes, tiny tins and much more! Free Senior Classes were very popular thanks to a grant from Susan Wade. In addition, two groups of 20 homeschool students enjoyed a nine-week program of full art classes.

Scholarships for students who can’t afford the cost to attend a class are available through a gift from the Louise A. Fathauer Memorial Fund.

Going with the Flow by Shelley Brucar

This Spring we have fun new ideas to make classes even more enjoyable and rewarding. • Parent-Add-10 - Allows

parents, caregivers or, mentors to take a class with a child at a reduced price ($10 each).

• Free Wi-Fi and coffee in the Schmalz Classroom - Offered to parents while their children take classes in the Barnett Arts Studio.

thebeat goes on}OUR MISSION:Introduce and promote the arts, enhance arts educational opportunities, and increase the impact of and access to the arts to improve the quality of life in the community.

So Many Ways to Support DAACBecome a member! Complete and return the membership form on the back of this Arts Beat, or grab your plastic money and call 423-3189 or go to www.decaturarts.org/support-arts.

Give a gift of appreciated assets or provide a bequest in your will or estate plans. Check the “contact me” box on the member-ship form or call Jerry Johnson.

Sponsor an exhibit! You, a group of friends, or your business can help bring great art to the Anne Lloyd Gallery. You’ll be recognized in Arts Beat, on the exhibit poster and exhibit invitations and at the opening reception. To learn more, call Gallery Director Sue Powell.

Make a major gift to support specific pro-grams and needs for DAAC.

Experience: ART Field Trip ScholarshipsThanks to a generous donation from the Young Philanthropists Giving Circle, DAAC now has scholarships available for school classes and other youth groups to participate in our Experience: ART field trip program. Each month the gallery exhibit provides a catalyst for field trip discussion, a “treasure hunt” for art concepts and a hands-on art project. If you are a teacher, parent or group leader who would like to explore this oppor-tunity, please contact Sue Powell at 423-3189 or [email protected].

I’m often asked where the Decatur Area Arts Coun-cil gets the money to offer all of its terrific pro-grams. The short answer is... from the generous people throughout the Decatur area.

DAAC doesn’t receive funding from the city or county or township. We are fortunate to receive two grants each year from the Illinois Arts Council Agency for general programs and regranting that amount to approximately 5% of our annual budget. Otherwise, local funds from individual members, business sponsors, foundations, corporations, and our two annual fundraisers fuel our activities.

A few recent examples of this local generosity are:• A grant from the Young Philanthropists Giving

Circle to support Experience: ART Field Trip scholarships.

• A donation from Susan Wade to make our free arts classes for seniors possible.

• A grant from Homefield Energy to allow us to offer bus scholarships to transport kids to PASS performances.

• A gift from the Amherst Hardy Foun-dation to fund the new Artist-in-Resi-dence Program.

Below are just a few of the ways that you can help DAAC “keep up the good work.”Thank you so much!

New Artist-in-Residence ProgramThanks to a grant from the Amherst Hardy Foundation, Decatur Area Arts Council is taking the arts into the schools through a new “artists in residence” program. Starting with four local elementary schools and utilizing Illinois artists, this program will bring an artist into the school to present a performance or work with the stu-dents on a project.

School arts programs are often the first to be cut despite the many studies showing that the arts teach children unique lessons in history, math, science, and language arts. As arts edu-cation is the cornerstone of the Decatur Area Arts Council’s mission, we are working to help fill this gap in our local children’s education.

Schedule an Arty Party and celebrate with flair!

We provide a quality art teacher and an hour-long art project in our Studio and you provide the cake, balloons, and all the

rest. Package prices vary depending on materials and number of guests. For more info, visit www.decaturarts.org/classes-programs/arty-party/ or call 423-3189.

YOUNG ARTISTS ShOWCASEJanuary 5-28Presented by Gallery 510 Arts Guild, Ltd.

Young Artists Showcase opens the new year with a freshness that only children’s art can truly deliver. Presented annually by Gallery 510 Arts Guild, Ltd., this exhibit features exemplary art by area students in fifth through eighth grade. Through a jurying process one hundred of the best entries were selected from almost 400 pieces of art. The result is a vibrant display of diverse subject matter and art media. Community sponsors, DAAC, Illinois Arts Council, Richland Community College, Dynagraphics Fast Impressions, Brinkoetter & Associates, Alan and Beth Frigy, The Andreas Foundation and Nova Framing proudly back this showcase aimed at nurturing and encour-aging young artists.

Awards ceremonies on Sunday, January 11 in the Anne Lloyd Gallery will recog-nize these talented young art-ists from Macon County and surround-ing towns.

EGO VS. ALTER EGOFebruary 5-28Far from his home in Romania, Ilie Vaduva recently landed in Decatur and has established himself in a studio at the Heroic Age Art Center in Mt. Zion. His childhood love of art was nurtured throughout his school years, training him in decorative mural paint-ing, graphic design, printmaking and classical skills. The combination of all these influences can be seen in his exhibit entitled Ego Vs. Alter Ego which show-cases huge, wall-size paintings that marry his unconventional touch of classicism with surrealistic images.

Vaduva has developed and perfected an innovative mixed media technique that combines transparent layers of oil colors and white ink applied with pen in crosshatch fashion. Deep, rich and subtle shades of color emerge, accented by texture and strong contrasts of light against dark. The psychology of ego and alter ego is represent-ed through scenes in which “characters” – ribbon-like mythological animals and chess pieces – meet their own distorted images.

SALVAGE & SELVAGEMarch 5-30The reclaiming and re-use of cast-off, found and recycled materi-als has sparked the imagination of artists in all media. This exhibit features the creative use of “non-traditional” ma-terials, surface design and stitching techniques by members of Fiber Artists Coalition. They embraced the challenge to create unique fiber artworks by combining the notion of salvage and selvage. “Fiber arts with a contemporary edge” describes their innovative approach.

An affiliation of textile artists from the Upper Midwest, Fiber Artists Coalition exhibits in venues throughout the U.S. Eight of their members col-laborated on Salvage & Selvage which is currently on tour. Many have published books about their processes, are in demand as teachers or lecturers and have exhibited internationally.
