LOUISE RENNISON
A Presentation of a Hilarious Adolescent Literature
Author
SOME POINTS OF INTEREST
Born in Yorkshire, England in 1951
Believed from an early age that she was destined to somehow
become famous. A direct quote from an interview with Rennison:
“Erm, I thought (wrongly) I might be a famous Irish dancer, or one of
those people who is just famous for being themselves. From a very early
age I imagined there was a camera following me everywhere, which was
a bit embarrassing when I went to the loo...but that is the price of fame.”
(Rennison)
Rennison’s books are generally based directly
off of her personal experiences with
adolescence.
“I keep getting told off by my publishers and also by
my family, who beg me not to admit that the books
are based on my life...but sadly they are. Almost
everything that happened in the books happened to
me and, yes, I am including shaving off my
eyebrows, which was the act of a complete and utter
prat.” (Rennison)

Rennison bore a child she
gave up for adoption when
she was just 17. When her
daughter, Kim, was in her
twenties she and
Rennison reunited. Kim
and Rennison talk daily,
and consider their current
relationship more like
sisters than mother
daughter. (Rennison)

At one point, Rennison’s ambition to be a
performing artist brought her to an Arts
school in Brighton. Unfortunately, acting
was not Rennison’s strong suite. During
an audition to play an embryo, the
director commented to Rennison,
"You are obviously a very intelligent
girl, Louise, but you must never go
on stage again. Your performance
made me feel physically
sick."(Rennison) Despite his negative
remarks, Rennison went on to star in her
own one-woman show entitled, “Stevie
Wonder Touched My Face,” as well as
perform on radio shows. ("Beam")
REVIEW OF ANGUS, THONGS, AND FULL-FRONTAL SNOGGING
“…a hilarious and an uncompromisingly accurate diary of a 14-year-old girl. This book is as entertaining, realistic, and comical as a book can get. It captures all the superficial, melodramatic, and boy-crazy thoughts that could ever possibly pass through a young teenager girl's mind... I finished this book in one day, but went to the bookstore immediately after finishing it to buy the next nine books in the series…I would recommend this book to women of all ages.” ("Beam")
“Suppose you combined two modern British diarists, Adrian Mole and Bridget Jones, into a single 14-year-old. Here’s what you’d get. A little raunchy and quite funny.” — The New York Times Book Review
