OF POSSIBILITIES!

This leaflet gives you a quick reference guide to all the songs, helping you unpack their potential through all the thematic and

musical features included in the whole EVERY series.

FROM THE VERY BEGINNING… our aim has always been to write the songs that children (and everyone else) will just love.

Songs with the breath of life, songs to teach and inspire,

We started writing the ‘Songs For Every…’ series in 1991, with little more than a piano, a pot of pencils and a big vision. It has always been our belief that children deserve the

very best songs we can possibly give them, and that they are capable of a whole lot more than we might expect. For 25 years now we have been creating music with as much life, colour and variety as we can possibly squeeze into the magic mix

of melody and lyrics. 10 books and 150 songs later, this popular series has become a firm favourite, and something of a ‘standard’ in UK primary schools.

We believe these songs have made a huge difference to the lives of countless children, and have transformed singing in schools over the past 25 years.

THANK YOU so much for your belief in our music. It’s been our privilege to have shared a little of ourselves in these songs, and we trust that you will enjoy

teaching and singing them together for many years to come.

TEACHING TIPS:

WHAT YOU NEEDAmplified sound system; Internet; tuned/untuned percussion instruments ACTIVITYCreate a Seasons Soundscape that’s ‘like a big kaleidoscope, filled with colour, filled with sound’. Sing the song through asking the children to listen carefully to the

lyrics and note seasonal images that could be expressed as sounds. Here are some to get you started:Sunshine Misty mornings Falling leaves

Blowing wind Birds singing Sudden showers Falling snow Discuss as a class any musical elements that could be used to express these lyrics,

such as pitch, dynamics, tempo, instrumentation etc. Encourage experimentation

with different timbres and dynamics in order to depict the different seasonal attributes, such as high, soft notes for birdsong or low, loud sounds for wind. In small groups, get the children to use instruments, voices or other

classroom objects to create their own seasonal soundscape compositions by either choosing one season or composing contrasting seasonal

effects. Perform the results to each other in the class.

• The chorus of this song should be sung with nice, open voices so make sure that the children have warmed up before they begin, then stand well, take deep breaths and keep the flow of air strong through each note. • As each verse depicts a different season, get the children to

think about the lyrics and which dynamics would suit each season best to really set the mood.• At the end of the song, take care not to forget the extra,

modulated bar on ‘any old time of’. A bit of practice over those final bars and clear choir directing will help.

LISTEN Listen to Antonio Vivaldi’s

The Four Seasons, his own seasonal

soundscape of spring, summer, autumn and

winter. Within the music, sounds of nature are

created in separate movements to transport us

through each season, such as bird calls, animal cries,

wind, thunder, rain, swaying grass and bubbling

brooks. Ask the children to describe the musical

dimensions and instruments used. Is the

summer movement fast or slow? What

effects do the violins make to evoke a

blizzard in winter?
