What's New, What's Cool, What's Happening
You Are the Visionaries!
Fire Service Special Events Planning is changing. It used to be very hard to share informationabout resources and incidents within and around the event itself. It's getting easier, and leaderswith great teams are implementing strategies and tools to communicate across agencies. We haveseen outstanding efforts roll out successfully this month in San Diego and Boise.
The first weekend in June, San Diego FireRescue Department provided support forthe Rock 'n' Roll San Diego Marathon, highlighting the race route in their system and trackingevery incident and associated resources seamlessly with minimal advance training.
Congratulations to San Diego for making something that was really hard look easy! We also reallyappreciate the great feedback on using SA and the SA Field Tool in this context.
For June 910, the Boise Fire Department used SA to map and monitor event details andassociated incidents at the X Games Boise. While the world’s top skateboarders and BMX ridersconverged on Rhodes Skate Park to compete for an invitation to X Games Minneapolis, Boise wassharing the X Games scene with their collaborators.
Congratulations, Chief Perry Oldenburg, Systems Administrator Travis Wagenmann, and GISSystems Projects Coordinator Eric Wing for all your work improving situational awareness inBoise!
What's Happening? We're Busy!
NIST Public Safety Innovation Accelerators
The Western Fire Chiefs Association (WFCA) and Intterra were awarded a NIST Public SafetyInnovation Accelerator Program Grant with a project focused on accelerating datadrivendecision making in the fire service. Through the grant, WFCA and Intterra will operate a data centerto grow data analytics, create a community of mentor departments to grow and teach the use ofanalytics in the fire service, and provide nearrealtime data analytical tools.
As part of the grant kickoff, David Van Ballegooijen (WFCA) and David Blankinship (Intterra)participated in a public safety data analytics panel at the 2017 Public Safety BroadbandStakeholder Meeting in San Antonio this month. Read about the other projects awarded here, andlook for more updates about the data endeavor in future newsletters!
An Honor to Serve
Intterra's Board Chair and Chief Strategy Officer Kate Dargan traveled to GEOINT held this monthin San Antonio to meet with the Nominating Committee for the US Geospatial IntelligenceFoundation (USGIF) Board of Directors. While there, she attended the presentation featuringseveral woman speakers and Girl Scouts focusing on engaging young people in geospatialsciences and services. GEOINT is the country's largest annual gathering of intelligence providers, satellite and sensor companies, data analytics and software providers all focused aroundgeospatial applications.
Kate was selected to serve on the USGIF Board and looksforward to actively representing the public safety perspectivewith the Foundation as it looks for ways to advanceeducation, use, practices, and products that link remotesensing, geospatial intelligence, emergency responders, and the public. She will be reaching out over the next year toseveral national public safety groups to gain their input onhow they would like to shape this emerging technology.
Drone Symposium
Kate Dargan also attended the first Fire Service Drone Symposium held at the Stanford LinearAccelerator Lab at the beginning of June. Well hosted by the Menlo Park Fire District andattended by over 50 fire departments plus researchers, tech innovators, and the Federal
Communications Commission, it wasdesigned as a leadership and strategicplanning workshop to help support publicsafety use of UAVs.

MarkUp, Mapping, Editing, Adding Data
Call it what you like, but just know that SA is designed to make map editing easy. If it doesn't seemeasy, there is probably just one step you need to make it so.
Your SA system is set up with specific map editing layers toggled on and ready to roll. Based onyour agency's preferences, however, you may need to toggle an "Edit (layer)" map service onfirst. Here's how.
