Tiny shiny cars and superheroes seen

Racing around on my computer screen.

My unblinking eyes roll this way and that,

All of a sudden I hear that awful ‘splat’!

No! Argh! Grrrr! I have to start again,

All my efforts went down the drain!

Why do these characters worry me so?

Why can’t I just get up and let them go?

One more time; I have to reach the score!

Then I’ll go out and play this game no more.

An hour passes, two and then three,

I have a headache; I don’t quite feel like me!

I must get up for a breath of fresh air,

My screen calls out to me; it seems to care.

Into the colourful gaming world I always drop,

A voice inside says this madness has to stop!

Big brother comes in, badminton racket in hand,

“Get out of that idiotic, topsy-turvy land,

In that silly gaming screen, you better not hide!”

Brother’s right! Ah! How much better I feel outside!

The Kakori Conspiracy

I could hear hushed voices through the closed door. My brother and his friends, Ram Prasad Bismil and Ashfaqullah Khan, were discussing something.

“For your own safety you should not listen, Srilata,” they said. I could only make out words like “funding the movement” and “money needed”.

I knew what a turmoil India was in. Bapu had withdrawn the Non-Cooperation Movement in 1921. My brother and his friends were part of a revolutionary party called the Hindustan Republican Association. I decided to listen carefully.

“I was on the train, the Eight Down, from Shahjahanpur to Lucknow. At each station the Station Master brought bags of money and put them in the guard’s carriage,” said Bismil.

“And there was no special guard to protect them?” my brother asked.

“Not a soul!” Bismil laughed.

I withdrew in silence. I knew they were planning something. I heard the news two days after the incident. On the evening of 9 August 1925 when the Eight Down came through Kakori, a village near Lucknow, my brother, Khan, Bismil and other revolutionaries stopped the train and looted the British money.

Their well-planned robbery, aimed at funding the revolutionary movement, shocked the British.
