They can ride on and get into attractions (haunted house, Ferris wheel, rollercoaster…) They sing and dance “sevillanas” and they go to the bullring (La Maestranza) to watch bullfights. SAMPLE WRITING: A DESCRIPTIVE ESSAY

Write an essay (100-130 words) about a festival you know. You should:

• Say where the festival is celebrated and describe the place

• Say what people do in this festival

Hiberno Festival

Mount Leith is a 1569 m peak in Hibernia. In this essay, I will discuss its cultural importance and its connection to the Hiberno festival.

Although not difficult to ascend, the mountain has never been climbed to respect the locals’ wishes.

However, many Hibernians and some tourists do a special religious walk around it. An important Hibernian festival, called Hiberno, also takes place at the bottom of the mountain.

Hiberno happens during the eighth month of the year. Many people come to Mount Leith to celebrate, say prayers and put up the Leithian flagpole. The local people believe that if the flagpole is straight, this is a good sign. If not, it is a very bad sign.

In summary, Mount Leith is very important to local Hibernians and has a strong connection to the Hiberno festival.

HOW TO WRITE A DESCRIPTIVE ESSAY

STRUCTURE

Introduce topic – always introduce the topic in your own words and say what you are going to do in the first paragraph of an essay.

Use linking words – again, notice the importance of linking words and phrases, as underlined here in paragraph 2

Closing or summing-up phrases – learn a few phrases you can use to start your summary. These include:

In summary, To sum up, In conclusion, To conclude, LANGUAGE No contractions – remember, this is a formal style of writing, for example I will, not I’ll Have a clear and logical plan for each paragraph – here the plan is simple: Paragraph (P) 1 facts about Mt and aim P2 – info about relationship between Mt and people P3 – info about festival at Mt P4 – summary of key points Punctuation –we don’t usually use exclamation marks in essays because of the serious tone
