Explain some of the thoughts and feelings Parrado and Canessa have whilst searching for rescue The extract begins by highlighting Parrado’s determination as he “drew ahead, spurred on by his curiosity”. Intrigued about what lay ahead, he moved on calling back to Canessa who “could not keep up” as he gave in to his exhaustion from the previous night. Despite this, they “walked on” in their soundless surroundings. The only thing that “broke the silence” was the sound of snow being crushed beneath their “cushioned feet” until it was drowned out by a roaring noise which grew louder and louder as they neared their destination. The sudden uproar came unexpected and “panic entered the hearts of both of them”, the feeling of fear was evoked within them as their minds jumped to all sorts of conclusions concerning the “dread of what they were to see”. However, rather than being overcome by panic, Parrado was persistent for the sake of seeing “what lay ahead” and his growing impatience “took complete” possession of him . The adrenaline that rushed within, exhilarated him and quickened his pace as he “drew two hundred yards ahead of Canessa”. Once he’d reached the end of the valley, Parrado was left astounded by the view that had driven him all this way. Parrado’s face was “wet with tears of joy” that had emerged due to burst of emotions that danced around inside him as he lay eyes on “paradise”. Both him and Canessa who “came up behind him”, were in high spirits, overwhelmed with joy as they were embraced by world that the they hadn’t seen for so long, “beautiful still”. Seeing this valley had given birth to new hope, “they were confident now that they were saved”.
