Welcome back Class 2!I hope you all enjoyed the Christmas break and are ready to get back into the swing of things! This letter is to inform you about what we are up to in Class 2 this term, if there is anything that is unclear or you have any other questions or queries – please do not hesitate to contact me at school or via email: [email protected]

The ClassroomFor this term the special topic role play area is set up with a sand pit with 2 Indian elephants called Mahdi and Humayra, some Indian dressing up clothes and an Indian kitchen. If you have any elephant, tiger or snake toys we could borrow for this area it would be greatly appreciated. We have our usual working wall displays for English and Maths to help the children become confident to learn independently. Also we have 2 class computers in the children’s zone where they can practise word processing skills, mouse control and enjoy a range of games. Dotty our cuddly class dog and her new pup, Spotty, who looks after our classroom when we are not in it, have really missed the children this week.Homework Spellings Spellings for your child this term are attached to this letter, please check the date of the test above the list. For this term spellings will be linked to phonic families, using the same focus sounds in words, or spelling rules. Children will have different spellings depending on which phonic phase they are working on. Spelling tests will always take place on a Friday morning, spelling books will come home on Friday so you can see which words need to be practised further. This needs to be returned and handed in by Thursday. Fun ideas for learning spellings: using a special pencil/pen, play memory games where the children can earn points towards a reward, use chalks or water and a paintbrush outside on the floor to write the spellings or make a treasure hunt where the children have to spell a word correctly before they can have the next clue. Reading BooksChildren can have as many reading books per week as you would like, please feel free to change your books before or after school. Children will have a colour sticker on the front of their reading record book so you know which books are the right level for your child. Remember to record when you have read at home as I award a merit for each time. MathsChildren will be given a mental maths target to practise, this will be noted in their yellow communication book. The children earn a bronze, silver and gold star then are given a new target to work on. These are also kept on the front of their maths books. The targets may be writing certain numbers correctly, learning number bonds or times tables off by heart. Occasionally there might be an online activity or game pack sent home (there will be a note sent home in this case).Other informationPlease ensure all your belongings are named to avoid confusion, anything unclaimed will be placed in lost property at the end of the day. If you have any Indian themed books/toys/figures we could use this term please bring them and make sure your name is on them.

Many thanks

Miss Rock
