SHORT COURSE SERIES

Units 1 – 6 Matching cards

1 Matching game

Interaction

Group work or pair work

With what

One set of cards per group or pair

Here’s how (5 minutes)

1 Form groups or pairs, giving each a set of shuffled cards.

2 The cards are placed face up on the table before students match them.

3 The pair or group to complete the matches first wins.

2 Name that match!

Interaction

Pair work

With what

One set of cards per pair

Here’s how (5 minutes)

1 Pair off students giving each pair a set of cards. 2 The pairs lay out the cards and make matches (see

Matching game), forming two columns. 3 The students shuffle the cards in the left-hand column

and place them face down in a pile, then do the same with the cards in the right-hand column and set this pile aside.

4 One player takes a card and reads it aloud. The other player has 30 seconds to name a word or expression that matches it. For sentence half cards, more than one answer may be possible.

5 If the player doesn’t know the answer, they look for it in the second pile.

6 The activity ends when the pairs have called out matches for all the cards in the pile.

The Matching cards can be used with each of the activities described below. The aim of the cards is to give students the opportunity to identify matches between words, phrases and sentence halves which appear in the unit in question. Card sets should be used at the end of the unit indicated or bundled together to revise two or more units.

3 Team board race

4 Memory game

Interaction

Group work

With what

One set of cards and a bag

Interaction

Pair work or group work

With what

One set of cards per group or pair

Here’s how (5 minutes)

1 Divide the students into two teams which stand on opposite sides of the board.

2 Put all the cards in a bag and ask a volunteer to pick one card and read the sentence half on it out loud.

3 Team members work together to write an appropriate match on the board.

4 The first team to offer a plausible match wins the point. The team with the most points at the end wins.

Here’s how (10 minutes)

1 Divide the students into pairs or small groups, which each receive a set of cards.

2 The students shuffle the cards and spread them out face down.

3 They take turns turning over two cards at a time. If the cards match, they keep them and go again. If they don`t, the students turn them back over and it’s the next player`s turn.

4 The student with the most matches wins.

SHORT COURSE SERIES

5 Go fish!

Interaction

Pair work or group work

With what

Two or more different sets of cards per pair or group

Here’s how (10 minutes)

1 Divide the students into pairs or small groups which receive two or more different sets of cards. The aim is to get rid of all the cards first by finding matches.

2 One player shuffles the cards, deals five each to the other players and puts the remaining cards face down. The players lay down matches from their hands in front of them.

3 The first player asks another player for a specific card: e.g., if they have I’ll tell him you called, they need a matching synonym card. They can ask: Do you have a synonym for I’ll tell him you called? If the player has the card, they must give it to the other player who then lays down the match. If the player does not have the matching card, they say GO FISH! The first player must draw a card from the pile. If it matches, they lay the two cards down. If there is no match, the player must discard any card from their hand and put it at the bottom of the draw pile.

4 The game continues with the student to the player’s left. The first player to get rid of all their cards wins.

6 Word bingo

Interaction

Individual work

With what

One set of cards, a bag

Here’s how (10 minutes)

1 Draw a line down the board and write all the words or phrases from the left-hand column of the relevant matching set down the left-hand side of the board.

2 As a whole class, the students call out matches. Write the match to each word / phrase on the right.

3 Tell the students to draw a bingo grid with 12 squares on a sheet of paper. They should write free in any two boxes then write one word or phrase in each box from either column on the board (a total of 10 words / phrases). Tell them to leave enough room to add a second word or phrase to every box.

4 Now erase the board and put the set of matching cards in a bag. A volunteer takes one card and reads it out. The students who have the match of the appropriate type (synonym, opposite, etc.) write the phrase or word in the corresponding box. Point out that identical phrases should not be matched!

5 The first player to complete the grid wins the game. Extension activity Re-use grids in class to encourage participation during future lessons. Each time a student uses an expression from their grid, they can cross it out. The first to use all expressions on their grid during a lesson wins.
