One day a stranger came to Tenali Ramakrishna’s house. He claimed to be a

lost relative of Tenali. Tenali did not remember him exactly but let him stay in his

house as a guest.

Suddenly, Tenali has to go to another town for a few days. The stranger, who

was actually a spy from a neighbouring kingdom, intentended to kill

Krishnadevaraya, so, he sent a fake note to king in Tenali’s handwriting.

On reading the note, king Krishnadevaraya rushed to Tenali’s house. Using

this chance, the spy attacked the king, but the alert king saved himself. He got

angry with Tenali and punished him to death. He asked Tenali to say how he

wanted to meet his death. Tenali cleverly replied that he wanted to meet death

only in old age. The kind and courtiers burst into laughter on hearing these words.

G Speaking Skills

Form into groups of four students each. Role play the

characters in the story you have just read.

Tenali Ramakrishna : Your Majesty, people always lie whenever they get a chance

to.

King : How can you say that, Tenali ? I have been a king for so many

years, but I have never lied. As far as I know, people lie under

certain situations. They do not lie always as you said.

Tenali : Your Majesty, I have a point that there is no one in the world

who has never lied.

King : Tenali, you are generalising. I, being a king, have never lied

and can never lie.

Tenali : I can prove otherwise, Your Majesty.

King : If so, then I challenge you.

Tenali : Your Majesty, I need a thousand gold coins and a year's time to

prove my theory.

(One year passed. Tenali built himself a beautiful house. He went to King's palace

in the disguise of a sage. Nobody could recognise him)

Tenali : Your Majesty, I have a beautiful house for myself. I stay and

pray there. My devotion has impressed the God. He appears

before me everyday in one of the rooms. I request you to feel

free to see the God for yourself. But he is only visible to those

who had led a righteous life and had never lied in their lives.

Minister : Your majesty, the sage is correct. I saw the God in the wall. I am

so overwhelmed with emotions.

Second Minister : Oh, Your Majesty ! It was a wonderful experience.

6

King : Hmm... now I must go and check the truth.

( The king went to the sage's house and stood before the mirror. He too was faced

by his own reflection.)

King(to himself) : According to the sage, only a person, who has never lied, can

see the God in this wall. Now, if I tell him that I haven't seen the

God, he will think that I am a liar.

(He came out of the room and said to the sage: You were right. I saw the God in the

wall. I am feeling so blessed.

Tenali : Your Majesty, are you sure you saw the God ?

King : Yes, I did.

Tenali : You saw God in that wall of the room, didn't you?

King : How dare you suspect my answer ? If you not had been a sage,

I would have killed you.

Tenali : Your Majesty, you had insisted that you as a king would never

lie. Your ministers were liars, but you too behaved like them.

Now do you accept that everyone is a liar sometime or the other ?

( pulling off his

false beard)
