welcome to IrelandIreland, on the western edge of Europe, is a land famed for its greenness and for its great variety of scenery. Ireland is a land of myths and legends and ancient history mixed with the modern and vibrant life of Ireland today.

Ireland was known as the “Celtic Tiger” because of the massive economic growth over the last 15 years and is one of the world leaders in high technology, pharmaceutical and airline industries. Our International Financial Services Centre has allowed Ireland to become a financial hub in Europe.

Irish people are renowned for their friendliness and hospitality, which greatly contribute to the ease with which overseas students adapt to the Irish way of life. Ireland, a member of the EU since 1973, is a thoroughly modern nation and the high quality of our education system is seen as one of the main contributors to our economic growth.

We have a rich literary and musical tradition. Our colourful history and culture have inspired such literary giants as WB Yeats, Oscar Wilde, George Bernard Shaw, James Joyce, Samuel Beckett and many others. Contemporary writers and poets such as Roddy Doyle, Paul Durcan, Frank McCourt, Maeve Binchy and Seamus Heaney write about Ireland today while U2, Westlife, the Script and the Chieftains are known worldwide for contemporary and traditional music.

The Irish interest in sport is legendary. You can go golfing, sailing, horseriding, play football and tennis. A great way to get to know the Irish is to talk about sport and what is happening in the sporting world.

England is a diverse country of history and culture. Everyone knows something about England; its famous royal family, footballers and its pop stars or tourist sights such as Big Ben and the British Museum. Just think of the well known images of black taxis and red double decker buses, the works of Shakespeare and the prehistoric stone circles such as Stonehenge, and this is only the start.

It is a land of contrasts - from exciting, cosmopolitan cities like London and Manchester to picturesque villages in the Cotswolds and Cornwall. There are also great areas of natural beauty such as the Lake District, and cities of learning and culture, like Oxford and Cambridge. For food and drink, enjoy a delicious afternoon tea or strawberries and cream or a pint of beer in the local pub, or why not try traditional fish and chips or a chicken tikka masala.

The English also love their sport, especially football, rugby and that most English of all sports - cricket - which only an Englishman can understand! Then, of course, you could join the queue for the world’s most loved and famous tournament of all - Wimbledon, the location of our London school.

During your stay at CES we have a varied and exciting social and

activity programme that will not only allow you to mix with other

students but you will get the opportunity to explore the wonderful

city of London, learn about England, its people and most importantly

the English language.

London is a thrilling place. It combines both traditional

and modern sights and has a unique atmosphere of

excitement and success. It is the financial and cultural

centre of the UK and is where the country’s news and

money are made.

From the famous sights of Big Ben, Westminster Abbey,

Buckingham Palace and St Paul’s Cathedral, which

capture the city’s glorious past, to the new sights like the

Tate Modern – the largest modern art gallery in the world

and the London Eye – the world’s largest observation

wheel, London has something for everyone.

The arts and music scene is dynamic and there are

thousands of cosmopolitan restaurants with all the world’s

main cuisines on offer, ranging from low cost to Jamie

Oliver and Gordon Ramsey’s 5 star quality.

Then there are London’s famous pubs for a real taste of

history and culture, and best of all - a pint!

Add to this the excellent shopping in Oxford Street, the up

market stores of Harrods and Selfridges and the alternative

such as Portobello and Camden markets.

And yet with all this frantic pace, London still has its

beautiful and many free museums like the Natural History

and British Museum. You can spend many pleasant hours

in tranquil parks and gardens like Regent Park and Hyde

Park in the centre and Wimbledon Common or Hampstead

Heath in the suburbs.

Wimbledon is a famous and fashionable suburb 20

minutes from the centre by underground or main line train.

Wimbledon is one of London’s best kept secrets! Dating

from the 11th Century, Wimbledon has developed into a

mature residential and commercial village with wonderful

cafes, pubs, restaurants and shops.

Wimbledon has three theatres, a multi-screen cinema and

many pubs and restaurants to cater for the cosmopolitan

and ever changing tastes of London. There is a superb

indoor shopping area (aptly named Centre Court), sports

facilities including the All England Lawn Tennis Club, home

of the world famous Wimbledon Tennis Championships,

a tennis museum and Wimbledon Common, the perfect

place to go for a gentle stroll and see one of London’s

most famous parks.

Contact us at: CES 12 Stoke Abbott Road, Worthing, West Sussex, BN11 1HE, England. Tel: +44 1903 231330 Fax: +44 1903 200953 Email: [email protected]

Worthing is an attractive seaside town of 100,000

people on England’s South Coast. It’s located only 10

minutes from Brighton and 1 hour and 15 minutes from

the centre of London by train. Its famous 8km long

promenade provides a wonderful place to walk in the

afternoon or evening and there are many other attractions

near the pier as well. There is also a large indoor swimming

pool close by. However, many visitors prefer to swim in the

clear, clean sea which the English Royal family have used

for relaxation over the centuries.

The Victorian architecture that stretches the length of the

promenade gives Worthing its dignified feel. The town

centre is full of shops, cafes, restaurants, high street stores

and a wide range of leisure and sporting activities, yet it is

a place where people have time to talk and it is easy to feel

at home here and make new friends.

Worthing is also very close to Chichester, which is famous

for its Roman walls and cathedral. Arundel is well known

for its amazing castle dating back to the 11th Century and

of course its cathedral. The castle is the home of the Duke

of Norfolk and both are well worth a visit.

All along the south coast there are many beautiful and

famous places to visit, all within an hour of Worthing town

itself. Worthing is also located beside the famous South

Downs. This area has been designated an area of natural

beauty and is of historic significance. There are many

famous landmarks on the Downs, including the famous

chalk carved figure “The Long Man of Wilmington”.

The town of Worthing is well known - Oscar Wilde wrote

his classic play “The Importance of being Ernest” there in

the summer of 1894. All in all, the town has an atmosphere

of relaxation and of an unhurried lifestyle. We are the only

British Council Accredited school in Worthing.

CES take great pride in the high quality and motivation of our academic team. The Director of Studies, in each school, is available to give you advice and help during your course and after you return home.

The Standard General English Course takes place every morning from Monday to Friday, leaving you free every afternoon to join the Social Programme or study in our Self-Access facilities. Your morning lessons are divided into two parts and you will usually be taught by two different teachers.

In the first lesson the teacher concentrates on improving your accuracy, focusing primarily on grammar, reading and writing. The course-book is the basis for much of this lesson, with supplementary material taken from workbooks and other resource material.

The second session concentrates on improving your overall communicative proficiency and fluency, focusing on your listening, speaking and vocabulary and consolidating the first part of the morning. You will also be able to work on specific pronunciation difficulties and improve the language you will use in real-life situations.

We recommend that, if possible, you arrive a week before your chosen course starts to allow us time to assess you and determine which level is most appropriate for you. Please note that we cannot accept any student for an examination course until we have confirmed that you are at the right level for the chosen examination. Your level will be determined by the Director of Studies, following an English Language Placement Test on your first day.

Your course will take place in the mornings and will be divided into two parts. In your first class, you will focus on the Grammar, Reading and Writing papers and in your second class, the emphasis is on Listening and Speaking. You will follow a course book in both classes and your teachers will also supply you with all necessary supplementary materials. During the

course, you will receive extra exam tutorials in the afternoons. We will also arrange practice exams for you on a regular basis throughout the course. These tutorials and the practice exams are all included in your fee.

A number of our CES teachers are qualified and experienced Cambridge examiners and their experience, combined with the tutorials and exam practice means you will be very well prepared for the exam at the end of your course. Our Director of Studies is always available to give you advice and to answer any questions you have about the exam.

Please note that our Cambridge Examination Preparation Courses will only take place if we have a minimum of 8 students for each level. The maximum number of students on any Cambridge Examination Preparation Course is 14.

If you plan to go to university in either Ireland or the UK then you need to take the IELTS examination. CES will help you achieve your goal.

IELTS is the most widely recognised university entry requirement in Europe. Most universities require a level of between 5.5 and 7.5. Exams take place at an external centre on a regular basis, usually once or twice a month.

Students follow the Standard General English course in the mornings and take the IELTS preparation course three afternoons per week on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. If you are starting your course at a low level you will be carefully encouraged and monitored in preparation for joining an IELTS Preparation Course. The ideal level for joining this course is intermediate (B1).

Your course will focus on improving your level of English as well as on developing your exam techniques. At the end of each week, you will be given a test, and a complete practice IELTS examination during the last week of the course. If you plan to take the exam while you are studying with CES, the Director of Studies will help you with registration.

CES has a number of different options for the younger learner. We have junior summer centres in Dublin and Navan in Ireland and in Worthing in the UK.

We at CES feel that learning English should be fun. We recruit teaching staff for our junior centres who will motivate and encourage junior students to build on the English they already know.

The morning is divided into two sessions and you will usually have two teachers. The first session concentrates on reading, writing skills and key grammar. The class is organised so that learning is fun, resulting in steady progress. After the mid-morning break you will concentrate on improving your oral skills using role-play, debate, project work and learning about your surroundings in Ireland and the cultural places you will visit during your stay.

FacilitiesCES Junior Summer Centres have been chosen for their excellent academic and sports facilities. They are conveniently located close to our homestays, in mature suburbs. All are convenient to public transport links. Sports facilities include playing fields and gyms. These facilities allow CES to arrange a very varied and challenging sports and activity programme.

ActivitiesWe want you to enjoy your stay with us so we have organised an action-packed programme at each of our centres. You will visit historical places, take part in a lot of activities, arts and crafts, dance and sports, make lots of new friends and go to school discos or other arranged evening activities. In addition there are full day Saturday tours to places of historical interest or to towns and villages with cultural places of interest.

Junior English Language and Golf ProgrammeDuring July and August junior students can take an English language and golf programme in Dublin. This programme combines golf lessons, work with woods and irons and actual practice on a course. Three golf professionals work with each group and there will be a play-off on the final day for the CES trophy.

24-hour careOur staff are available throughout the day and the night as we realise how important it is that parents know their children are with caring and responsible people. Young students can be homesick, get lost or need medical care at any time, so our staff are always available and willing to help.

All our excursions are accompanied by CES leaders known as ‘Yellow Shirts’ (because of their clearly identifiable polo shirts) and these leaders have been very carefully trained in dealing with young people. They are selected for their warm manner and sense of responsibility.

One of the best ways to learn more about the people of Ireland and England is to choose homestay accommodation. Family life is informal and the people are welcoming, friendly and talkative, so you will have plenty of opportunities to practise your English.

Our homestays are carefully chosen by our Accommodation Officers and all homestays have been visited and approved by us. You will live in a house with a garden in a pleasant suburb close to good public transport. Students travel to and from school by bus or train.

Having chosen a homestay suitable for you, details will be sent and we would suggest you make contact with them to confirm your arrival time. You will have a light breakfast and evening meal in your homestay. Dinner usually takes place between 6pm and 7pm which allows you to join our evening programme or take part in some of our activities during the long summer evenings.

Dublin - accommodation is half board Monday to Friday and full board at weekends. Wimbledon - accommodation is half board. Worthing - accommodation is full board. Dublin Junior Students - accommodation is full board.

By enrolling you therefore agree to provide these and keep us informed of any changes. You also give permission to share these details at a time of inspection by an English UK inspector or Government official.
