Plagiarism: What is it?______________________________________ Simply put, plagiarism is stealing written work from another writer. It is not

“copying” or “borrowing”. It is theft and it could even be considered to be fraud, which

is a crime! No matter what your excuse for turning in someone else’s work as your own,

it is still cheating and very unethical behavior. It can happen at all levels of society and

the definition doesn’t change whether at the high school level or professional.

To prevent turning in a plagiarized paper, a writer must “cite” the work if there is

anything that is not original thought added to the written work. Your teacher will give

you guidelines for the proper method(s) of citing your research paper or any other writing

assignment you may have to complete.

Some examples of plagiarism are:

1) turning in someone else’s work as your own 2) copying words or ideas from someone else without giving credit 3) failing to put a quotation in quotation marks 4) giving incorrect information about the source of a quotation 5) changing words by copying the sentence structure of a source without giving

credit 6) copying so many words or ideas from a source that it makes up the majority of

your work, whether you give credit or not. [http://www.plagiarism.org/learning_center/what_is_plagiarism.html]

Don’t forget: citing your sources and giving credit for material you want to use makes

your written work ethical and trustworthy, and a reflection of who you are as a person.

Citing allows you to write papers that other people will want to read and perhaps be

encouraged to continue to do further research on their own.

Be a leader, not a follower. Write your own thoughts and ideas. If you want to

support your ideas with those of others, remember to cite the material properly. It is very

easy to cheat and plagiarize. It is, as well, very easy for your teacher to check to see if

your paper has been plagiarized. Penalties can be severe, so do it right...it is worth it!

English 12A Unit 2: Book Review Assignment – 75 Points Introduction Have you grumbled about book reports in the past? This is your chance to complete a

book review project as an alternative to a book report. You will show your creativity

and talents by completing an original project to summarize your book. Be creative and

have fun!

STEP 1: Choice: Visit with your instructor about a book to read and review for your

English class. Your teacher has been provided with a list of books that match the themes

of your English class. You may choose from that list or you may choose a book with a

different theme, but be sure your book choice has been approved by the teacher.

The school library or the public library in your community will have other books that

revolve around the same themes as your English class.

Instructor approval:

STEP 2: Format: Next, choose the book review presentation you want to use for your

book review from the following list.

Your book review project must be presented to your class and/or teacher. If your book

project will take special materials to complete, you are responsible for finding those

materials. Your book review project must also be approved by your instructor.

Follow all requirements carefully! Instructor approval:

English 12A Book Review Project List

1. Create a mini comic book of the book you read that includes a cover and back cover; and 4 inside

pages with information on both sides of the page. Review copies of old and new comic books for ideas. Each page of the story must include written captions. Pages to be included must contain: an introduction, 3 characters, setting, plot, at least 2 story events, the major problem solved, and an intriguing closing that leaves the reader wanting you to create more pages. Use a variety of colors, diagrams, and dialogue in constructing your comic book. Visit with your instructor before starting your comic book project so that you can agree on whether your comic book will be drawn out on paper or completed using technology. You are required to present your comic book to at least 3 people (one must be your teacher) and get their written comments on your product.

2. Create a written and pictorial timeline of the story line in the book that you read. The timeline must include at least 12 story event captions and 12 pictures. Get approval from your instructor on the materials and technology to be used to create the timeline. Be creative when deciding how to create your pictures. When you are finished with your product present it to your class and/or instructor.

3. Dramatize your book! To make your book appear as if it has been made into a play on Broadway, come to class dressed and made up as the main character and present a 3 minute dramatization of the storyline in the book. For this project, your book has to be one that has not been made into a play or movie. Your presentation should be about one of the conflicts or issues presented in the book. You are required to turn in a written script of your play to your instructor for approval before you present it.

4. Pack your bags! You are joining the characters in the book for a time period in the story you read. Prepare a detailed and concise packing list of what you will need to take along to be prepared for the travel that takes place in your book. Remember, you cannot leave the story in progress and go back home and get something later so be prepared. Then, type up a summary of why each item is important to take along staying true to the storyline in the book. Next, find a bag and pack as many of the items as you can find (without spending money on them) and present your packed bag, detailed packing list, and summary pages to your instructor for grading.

5. Good news, the book you have been reading has just become #1 on the New York Times Bestseller List. A major news network wants to interview you on the 6:00 news tonight to get your opinion about the book. In order for you to be prepared, write out 12 questions that the news show might ask you about the book. Ask your instructor to help you anticipate the questions. Then, prepare 12 “detailed” answer note cards so that you can practice before you are interviewed! Turn all of your questions along with the note cards in to your instructor for grading. Act out the interview in front of your class/instructor to see how well you are prepared. Get help to act out the parts if needed.

6. Write your own original book review format here: _____________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________

English 12A Unit 3: Character Sketch – 25 Points Introduction: Have you ever listened to the radio and wondered what the DJ looked like

from listening to his or her voice? Have you ever read a book and felt like you could

pick the main character out in a crowd of people if they were real, simply from the

information the author had given you? What do authors do to make their characters come

alive? You are going to get a chance to make a character come alive through writing.

Your challenge is to describe your character so well, that the reader can actually draw

their image, complete with facial expressions, body movements, and even the clothing

they wear.

A character sketch gives the reader a feel for what a character is like by describing

him/her in great detail. For this assignment, you will be writing a character sketch about

someone. You may choose a real person, a fictional character from a book or movie, or

you may invent your own character. It is your job to get beyond describing the physical

features to showing the real essence of the character. As you go through the following

steps, complete the attached chart.

STEP 1: Decide who you want to write about. Who is your character? Is it your best friend or your worst enemy? What are you going to name your character? STEP 2: Describe your character. Complete the chart to get a better feel for who your character is, inside and out. Focus on using words that will have an impact on your reader and situations that show the real essence of the character you chose. STEP 3: The writing process: You will type a two-page paper that is double-spaced and in 12 pt. Times New Roman font.

A. Combine all your thoughts into one theme which will become your topic sentence and the focus for your writing. For instance: “My mother is a very hard worker and seems to never tire.” Then decide how you might show the reader these characteristics. You might choose to describe a typical day for her, or perhaps write the character sketch as if you were presenting her with the Mother-of-the-Year Award, listing all of her accomplishments. Maybe you want to pretend you

have just won an award and you are writing an acceptance speech with the focus on the sacrifices your mother made to help you get where you are.

B. Use vivid details appealing to the reader’s sense of sight, sound, smell, touch, and

taste. Don’t use weak language or words that barely tell the reader about your subject. You are writing a verbal picture, so show the reader what you are thinking. Choose only the details that will help you create the desired impression. Is there a common thread or theme about this person that would tie the important characteristics together?

C. Include an introduction, body, and conclusion in your paper.

Introduction: Lead the reader into the character sketch. Body: Describe the character in great detail using vivid adjectives

and descriptive language. Conclusion: Bring the character sketch to a close.

Part 2: Job Application Complete the attached job application. It should be typed if possible, or neatly hand printed in black ink so it can be easily read. Answer the questions honestly. If you lie on your application and the employer discovers the lie, it is grounds for dismissal from the job. To be turned in: Completed job application (10 pts) Part 3: Resume You do not land that high dollar job by just walking in the door of the business and demanding that they give it to you—you have to earn it! Many an actress has had to wait tables to support herself while getting her career off the ground. Famous athletes have put in numerous hours of practice, with a few bumps and bruises along the way, to enhance their skills before they earn high salaries. You too will have to exert a bit of effort. Your first job is probably going to be what is called “an entry level job”. This may be working at a restaurant as a dishwasher if you eventually want to be a chef, or holding the stop sign for the highway crew if you want to run heavy equipment. Whatever your first job is, it is going to give you some valuable experience to put on a resume. Now you wonder, what is a resume? A resume is a one page summary about you and your skills. It covers your education, skills, talents, and hobbies, as well as your contact information. A resume is what you use to “impress” an employer and make him or her want to hire you. STEP 1: Research

Using the internet, research some of the guidelines and examples of resumes. Think about what you could put in a resume to “sell” yourself to the employer. Notice the style that is used. The main categories of a resume are listed on the attached sheet. Think about each category and what you have to offer. Complete the resume information worksheet at this time! STEP 2: Resume Worksheet: Writing your Resume

When you give a resume to your employer, you must remember that this becomes their first impression of you. If they have 50 applicants for one position, they will go through the resumes to narrow the field down to the number they would like to interview (3-5 people). If your resume doesn’t “STAND OUT” in a positive way, or fails to show the qualities that the employer is in need of, it will immediately go to what is known as “file 13” or the trash can, and you can forget that job possibility.

20080801/ cp VPL – English 12A

Page 17: English 12A - PBworks

Name ______________________________ Score __________

So, just what is that employer looking for in your resume? The employer wants a document that is one page long, typed, neat and easy to

read, and only has pertinent information regarding the position. An employer doesn’t want to waste time trying to decipher information. An employer just wants to be able to find information at a quick glance.

Important information for a resume:

1) Your Name: The first thing the employer needs to see in a resume is your name. It should be

fairly big and bold. Use a font and type size that will be easy to read and bold your name. It can either be centered at the top or to one side, but the important thing is that it “stands out” in a positive manner.

2) Contact Information: Don’t forget to give your contact information! A phone number and email

address are good. If you forget this, the employer can’t contact you and offer you the job!

3) Employment Goal: This section gives the employer a feel for why this job is important to you. If

your future goal is to be a nurse and you are applying for a nurses’ aide position, then the employer is more likely to hire you over someone whose future working goal is hotel and restaurant management.

4) Employment Qualifications: Now for the meat of your resume! You have listed out your qualities on the

attached worksheet. Which category should go first? Always start with the category that has the information that fits the job the best. If you are still in high school, but you have had a job in the past in which you gained skills that would help prepare you for this job, you should start with the employment section. If you are applying for a job at a bakery, and have learned how to decorate cakes as a hobby, but have no work experience in this area, then you should put your talents/hobbies nearer the top.

Note: List the categories in descending order of importance in regard to the job

you are applying for.

This is one time that you will not write things out in paragraph form. The key here is to use bullets to accent the key points about you. Your employer wants to glance at your resume and quickly glean the information he or she is looking for. An employer

20080801/ cp VPL – English 12A

Page 18: English 12A - PBworks

Name ______________________________ Score __________

doesn’t have time to wade through paragraph after paragraph—he or she only wants the key information.

5) References: For this section, simply state “References will be furnished upon request”. Before

you go any further, you need to contact people and ask if you can list them as references. Put together a separate page with at least three references. Include their name, title, place of employment, and contact information. When selecting these individuals, do not use family members. You should select reputable people that have had experience working with you in some capacity, such as a teacher or community club leader. Make sure you contact people that can vouch for your work ethics and abilities.

STEP 3: Writing the Resume: Do you have the “style” for your resume picked out? You can search the internet

for samples of resumes to give you ideas, but be creative and add your personality to your resume. Be careful and don’t overdo it, though, to the point that you turn the employer off.

Have you selected an entry level job of interest? If not, do so at this point.

Job Choice: ______________________________________________ Type your resume:

1. Heading: Your name and contact information 2. Career Goal: What is your dream position 3. Body: List the categories in descending order of importance.

4. References: State “Available upon request.” Type up a second page with your references listed.

Tips:

Keep the resume to one page. Make it neat, clean and easy to read. Use bullets to highlight important information.

English 12A Unit 4: Job Interview – 25 Points Note: Watch the video “Job Skills: Interview tips from a Recruiter: How to win the job you want” and complete the quiz. [These skills fall under “Foundation Knowledge and Skills” on the Kansas Career Fields and Clusters Model.] Introduction: You should feel good about yourself—the employer has called you and set up an interview. All that hard work on your resume paid off. Congratulations! Now comes the final step in the process—the interview! Are you ready? What things do you need to know? The video gave you lots of tips. Let’s see if you can put them into action. STEP 1: Review the information you have learned from the quiz and practice answering questions while looking in the mirror. Remember to smile, have good eye contact, and speak in a clear voice that can be easily heard. Show that you are proud of yourself and your abilities. STEP 2: Dress for the occasion. If you are applying for an office job, do not walk in the door in jeans and a t-shirt. Likewise, if you are applying for a gardening job, don’t walk in the door in a suit. STEP 3: Set a date with your instructor (or a person of his or her choosing) for your interview. STEP 4: When the time comes, you need to show up for your interview 10 minutes before—no sooner, no later. Take a copy of your resume and a list of references should the interviewer need them. The first person you meet is often a secretary. Be sure to treat them in a kind manner, as they will give feedback to your employer on your behaviors while waiting for the interview. When called, enter the room with a smile, introduce yourself, and offer a handshake. Wait to be seated until you are instructed to do so. Keep in mind the tips you learned in the video when answering questions at the interview. At the completion of the interview, thank your interviewer. The attached evaluation sheet will be used to evaluate your performance.
