I am writing this President’s Message the day before our annual South Australian Engineering Excellence Awards dinner, which promises once again to be a fantastic showcase of the achievements of engineers in this State and their contribution to the wider community. I would like to personally congratulate the winning engineering teams who made the projects possible. I would also like to particularly congratulate the South Australian Young Professional Engineer of the Year, Gerry Doyle MIEAust CPEng and the South Australian Professional Engineer of the Year, Ken Schalk FIEAust CPEng. Gerry and Ken are

outstanding examples to all members of the engineering profession.

Engineers Australia has nearly 100,000 members, around 6000 of whom are in South Australia, and we rely on those members who are motivated to volunteer their time to support the small number of Division staff. We are indeed very fortunate to have the commitment and skills of these dedicated people.

Every year for the past five years Engineers Australia has participated in an annual benchmarking study of professional associations, conducted by Beaton Consulting. This study is based on a random but statistically significant sample of members. The recent results from the 2010 study point to a number of challenges facing our association.

Engineers Australia was perceived by respondents as a low performer by comparison to other similar associations (overall performance score of 6.01 versus an average of 6.55). This research has shown also that the members of Engineers Australia are less engaged with the association than members of similar associations (score of 6.36 versus 6.83).

These results are leading to a significant re-evaluation of Engineers Australia, through both the Council and other volunteer bodies, as well as through our paid staff. Whilst it is early days, it is clear that we need to focus on improving our member experience in the following areas:

• Sense of belonging to a community

• Building the standing of our members

• Supporting the development of knowledge and skills

• Providing access to information that will assist members to perform their roles

• Keeping members up to date with developments or issues impacting on their field or business.

I encourage all members to get involved in this re-evaluation. I would be delighted to hear from you with your views and ideas, so I can feed these back to our Council and to our Chief Executive. Please feel free to communicate with me through the following email address [email protected].

2011 ADMAnnual Division Meeting and Christmas Networking Event

Engineers Australia South Australia Division would like to invite you to attend our 2011 Christmas Networking Event to be held Thursday 1st December 2011.

The Christmas Networking Event will be held at Next Generation, War Memorial Drive, North Adelaide. The event will provide a chance for you to join us for networking opportunities and to celebrate the end of a successful year for the engineering profession. Refreshments and canapes will be served from 6pm to 9pm. Prior to the Christmas Networking Event there will be a short Annual Division Meeting.

Attendance at the Annual Division Meeting is free and there is a cost of $15 per head for members and their partners and $30 per head for non members to attend the Christmas Networking Event.

The South Australia Division’s new Technical Program Coordinator Ashlea Klingberg joined the South Australia Division in August 2011.

Ashlea is responsible for coordinating all the South Australian groups technical programs. Her other responsibilities include managing the division diary and room bookings.

Ashlea loves travelling and always looks forward to a trip whether its a weekend getaway or several weeks in Bali.

Malcolm Kinnaird Engineering Excellence Award Winner andExcellence Award Winner for the category of Buildings & Structures -Adelaide Oval Western Grandstand Redevelopment entered by AureconThe overall highest recognition for an engineering project, the Malcolm Kinnaird Engineering Excellence Award, was won by the Adelaide Oval Western Grandstand Redevelopment. This project showcases the local design and construction expertise and significantly contributes to the community of South Australia. The project undertaken by Aurecon used around 2,000 tonnes of steel, 200 precast wall panels and 430 seating planks all designed, fabricated and erected in 18 months.

The 2011 South Australian Engineering Excellence Awards, hosted Friday 16th September 2011 by Engineers Australia South Australia Division President, Dr David Cruickshanks-Boyd FIEAust EngExec, brought together over 350 guests with the Governor of South Australia, His Excellency Rear Admiral Kevin Scarce AC CSC RANR CompIEAust, to celebrate a year of achievements of South Australia’s professional engineering innovators.

In welcoming guests, Dr David Cruickshanks-Boyd said, “The engineering profession strengthens the economic and social foundation of South Australia through the innovative and sustainable application of engineering principles to solve problems for society.”

Winners of the Engineers Australia’s South Australia Division Awards are eligible for nomination to the 2011 Australian Engineering Excellence Awards to be announced at Parliament House in Canberra on Wednesday 23rd November 2011.

Excellence Award Winner for the category of Project Management - Lake Condah Restoration Project entered by GHD Pty LtdThe Engineering Excellence Award for Project Management was won by GHD Pty Ltd for the Lake Condah Restoration Project. The project was managed around a number of challenging constraints that included restricted seasonal access, minimal aesthetic impact of the water retention structures, extensive land holder negotiations and the management of aboriginal heritage issues. Following engagement with the community, the procurement plan was modified to also provide training opportunities with long term employability benefits.

SA Young Professional Engineer of the Year – Gerry Doyle MIEAust CPEngDuring his career, Gerry has been involved in a number of landmark projects, including planning the expansion of Roxby Downs Township to cater for the expansion of the Olympic Dam Mine, managing the engineering team for SA Water’s major network improvement to accommodate water from the desalination plant to the northern suburbs, and the Statewide Community Wastewater reuse program.

SA Professional Engineer of the Year – Ken Schalk FIEAust CPEngKen has been regarded as the pre-eminent stormwater engineer in South Australia for the past 20 years. He is a trusted advisor to many local governments on stormwater issues. During his career Ken has consistently pushed the boundaries of stormwater management, including authoring guidelines for Urban Stormwater Master Planning. He is also a leading pioneer in water sensitive urban design.


Excellence Award Winner for the category of Innovation/Research & Development - In-Situ Submarine Generator Repairs entered by ASCThe Australian Submarine Corporation were awarded the Engineering Excellence Award for Innovation/Research and Development for the In-Situ Submarine Generator Repairs. Every navy with submarines dreads the maintenance event that requires cutting open a submarine pressure hull. ASC, leading a team of subject matter experts, developed an ingenious repair philosophy analogous to key-hole surgery. This procedure enabled the repair to be completed in weeks rather than months, saved $3 million, and most importantly increased availability of the submarine.

Commendation for Reports, Procedures & Systems• Northern Expressway (Acoustics) – AECOM

Excellence Award Winner for the category of Project Infrastructure - Clare North Substation Project – Energising the Clare Wine Region entered by ElectraNet and Parsons BrinckerhoffThe Clare North Substation Project – Energising the Clare Wine Region, by ElectraNet and Parsons Brinckerhoff, won the Engineering Excellence Award for Project Infrastructure. The Clare North substation project has achieved the goal of securing power to the Clare Valley wine producing region which is of critical importance to the industry and the South Australian economy. The project has pioneered state-of-the-art high voltage technology, putting into practice a number of innovations that have received both Australian and international acclaim.

structural cOllege eminent speaker visits aDelaiDeOn the 17th August 2011 the South Australia Division Structural Branch was privileged to host Emeritus Professor Paul Grundy FIEAust CPEng as part of his tour as the Structural College’s Eminent Speaker for 2011.

Professor Grundy presented “Disaster Risk Reduction and the Engineer” to the 65 members and guests present.

Professor Grundy's presentation proposed that engineers should consider events beyond the usual design standards and consider a "Disaster Limit State" for when an event effects not one but many structures and critical infrastructure at the same time.

Professor Grundy noted that engineers should have a holistic approach to design to minimise loss of life, livelihood, social cohesion and assets. Examples were drawn from recent major disasters such as the Victorian Bushfires, recent earthquakes and tsunamis.

The presentation called for robustness not just in the design of a structure but also in the systems that make the building useful and in the emergency response, ensuring there is a plan B.

Emeritus Professor Paul Grundy FIEAust CPEng

Ken was a retired Professional Mechanical Engineer who commenced work at General Motors Holden, Woodville, as a Technical Trainee at the time the first Holden car was produced. The drawing office moved to Fisherman's Bend and in order to complete his Draftsman's Certificate the company arranged for him to begin work at Chrysler Dodge De-Soto. In 1954 he joined the Architect in Chief's Department, completing his Bachelor of Technology degree at the University of Adelaide in 1964. In 1983 Ken joined the Engineering and Water Supply Department as the Supervising Engineer for Mechanical and Electrical Contracts and finally as a Contracts Manager for Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Contracts that included tender evaluations and recommendations.

Ken also undertook an Arbitration Course with the Institute of Arbitrators, Australia, and became an arbitrator. His field experience included a period as the Resident Engineer for the Happy Valley Water Filtration Plant and in 2006 he was elected a Fellow in Engineers Australia.

As a Rotarian Ken was involved in establishing Rotary Health and as a result of this work was awarded a Paul Harris Fellow. Ken was a Chartered Fellow with Engineers Australia and had been a member for 48 years.

PhD candidate in the Faculty of Science and Engineering, David Hobbs MIEAust, has won the stage final of the Three Minute Thesis (3MT™) competition at Flinders University.

Mr Hobbs, who was one of eight students who took part in the final, won first prize for his presentation on his project which looks at haptic gaming to help children with cerebral palsy.

With a single, static PowerPoint slide as a backdrop and without the aid of props or other audio-visual material, each of these PhD candidates was required to explain their research project to a three-person judging panel and the audience as plainly and engagingly as possible.

Mr Hobbs takes home $2000 and will travel to Perth next month to take part in the Australia and New Zealand grand final of the 3MT competition.

Dean of Graduate Research, Professor Jeri Kroll, said the competition was a terrific way for students to learn how to explain the significance of their research.

“The ability to explain their research, clearly and succinctly, is essential to helping these students’ colleagues, the wider community and the government understand why and how their research is important,” Professor Kroll said.

“These students deeply care about what they’re doing, so the competition is also a way of learning how to communicate their passion to a non-specialist audience,” she said.

“Most of the presenters memorise their pitch, which gives them a chance to practice oral presentation too. There have been some terrific performances already in the Faculty finals. It’s going to be fun.”

The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition was developed by and first held at the University of Queensland in 2008.

JuDges prOfileIn this October edition of Engineering South Australia we continue to profile judges who were involved in assessing entries for the 2011 South Australian Engineering Excellence Awards.

We have been providing the profiles of many of the judges assisting with this process over several editions to introduce them to the South Australia Division and to acknowledge their contribution.

Andrew Stevens MIEAust CPEngWhy did you decide to become an engineer?

I always had a love of aircraft and motor racing. I originally wanted to become a pilot, but realised that I wouldn’t fit in to the military, and couldn’t afford the civil route, so I thought that becoming an Aeronautical engineer was the next best thing.

What do you like the most about the engineering profession?

• Solving problems.

• Seeing the idea or plan that you had reach fruition.

• Working with some of the most amazingly skilled and clever people, and seeing young engineers grow in confidence and realise just what they can achieve.

What project(s) are you working on now?

I’m currently the Chief Engineer for the shipbuilding element of the Air Warfare Destroyer Project. This one big project is made up of many second tier projects, many of which I have either a role in or am keeping a watchful eye on.

What do you see as one of the biggest issues facing the engineering profession?

Attracting and keeping the highly talented and mobile next generation into the engineering profession.

What are your hobbies?

I am an avid Formula 1 fan, have a Lotus sportscar that I play with on weekends, and occasionally bash out a tune on guitar. I also enjoy watching Port Magpies in the SANFL, Cricket at the Adelaide Oval, and when I have time, a walk on the beach with my wife and dog.

What advice would you provide to someone interested in becoming an engineer?

Seek out a couple of engineers to talk to, make sure that you are prepared to put in the hard yards to get there, select an area that really interests you, and go for it !

What do you think you will be doing five years from now?

I’ve learned never to predict too far into the future, but if I’m not delivering HMAS Sydney to the Navy, I hope that I’m playing a major role in either the next generation submarine, or frigate projects.

If you could have worked on any engineering project, throughout history, what would you choose?

The Apollo Space program. Clear objective. Ground breaking engineering stretching the limits of technology. Safety critical, and nation building. All done with the lowest price bidder!

What is your motto?

There are no stupid questions. Only stupid answers.

Who would you most like to meet?

Is my wife reading this? Orville and Wilbur Wright – true pioneers. In the current day there are too many people, but on the engineering front, maybe Patrick Head of Williams F1 fame would be high up there.
