The April Alpha Delta Kappa state convention was discussed and hat center- pieces were assembled for the meeting. American Legion Auxiliary The American Legion Aux- iliary, Frank McMillian Unit 296, met on March 25 at the Shelby Legion Club with 19 members and one guest pres- ent. President Avis Rathje led the opening ceremony fol- lowed by the reading of the minutes by Secretary Teri Logan which were approved as read. Doris. Donna Krumbach, Mem- bership Chairman, reported that we have 98 percent of our goal. Members are encouraged to invite possible new mem- bers to our meetings. Doris White, Courtesy Chairman, reminded members to inform her of cards that should be sent to the community. Legislative Chairman, Lois Coffin, reported on the “Honor Flight for Korean War Veterans” to Washington, D.C. Over 400 veterans were able to go, with some from our local area. Billie Kumpf from Shelby was one of them. Lois also reported about the four Army Chaplains who went down with the USS Dorches- ter in 1943. They are honored annually for their courage. President Rathje read thank yous from the Good Samaritan Society for the snack plates, the Phillis Schlesing family for the funeral dinner. A donation was received. Pat Tieg sent a note for the Get Well cards. Ann and Clare Wieton wrote a note thanking the Auxiliary for all of the quilt . State competition this year are Danielle Schaf for Shelby, Emily Kay for Rising City, and Tiffany Vavicek for Osceola. President Rathje attended the District 7 Convention in Columbus. There were 43 members present. An invitation was read to the Osceola Legion Auxiliary Spring Tea on April 17 at 2 p.m. The Shelby Auxiliary Spring Tea will be 10 a.m. April 22 at the Shelby Legion Club. April Birthdays are Marga- ret Coffin, Lois Coffin, Alice Augustin, Virginia Bernt Bond and Maxine Rempe. The next meeting will be at the Spring Tea. Chairman is Teri Logan with Pat Teig co-chairman. Rising City Legion Auxiliary Ten members attended the March 24 meeting. President Janet Bemis called the meet- ing to order. Joyce Rathje, district chaplain, and Sandy Sutton attended the District meeting in Columbus dur- ing March. This was a joint meeting of the Legion and the Legion Auxiliary. Shane Osborn, candidate for the United States Senate, spoke at the District meeting. Cindy Sanley, Girls State chairman, reported the applicant for Girls State has been accepted as a delegate representing the Rising City unit, and the registration fee has been paid. Margaret Topil has com- pleted the piecing of a Quilt of Valor. It has been sent to Kris- tin Wilton, whose daughter, Ann, presented information about this quilt project at the October meeting. Ann is Vice President for Development for the Centennial Chapter of FCCLA. The quilt will be quilted and bound. Viki McCracken reported on arrangements for Memo- rial Day. Several suggestions were made as to a speaker, laying of the wreath and special music. Posters will be made and displayed around the community. Estella Mortensen, Legislative chairman, reported on articles of inter- est in the Legion Dispatch and the Auxiliary Star. She reported there are 15 bills in Congress having to do with Veterans. Ramona Ellison will host the April 28 meeting. - Melba Glock Garrison 402-367-0264 The Great Plains 4-H club held its 2014 organizational meeting on Wednesday, March 26 at the Garrison Community Hall. Nine mem- bers were present. President Kalan Zeilinger conducted the meeting with Hayden Schwang acting as secretary in the absence of Amanda Clymer. After reciting the 4-H pledge, dates of upcom- ing events were shared and enrollment forms completed. Leader Doug Kershner recom- mended that elections be held at the next meeting when all members can be in atten- dance. Doug also asked the mem- bers to come up with ideas for the club’s 10 hours of community service. Projects will be decided next month. Doug informed the 4-Her’s that Katie Plescac from the extension office will be at the April meeting to provide Quality Assurance training for all members planning to show animals at the county fair. The meeting was adjourned and lunch was served by the Zeil- inger and Schultz families. The next meeting is scheduled for April 23, 2014 at 7 p.m. at the Garrison Hall. Beth and Brian Zeil- inger, Ruby Barlean, and Sharon Hoeft attended the 100th birthday open house honoring Bea Fadschild on March 23 at Brookstone in Elkhorn. The Great Plains 4-H club held its 2014 organizational meeting on Wednesday, March 26 at the Garrison Community Hall. Nine mem-bers were present. President Kalan Zeilinger conducted the meeting with Hayden Schwang acting as secretary in the absence of Amanda Clymer. After reciting the

4-H pledge, dates of upcom-ing events were shared and enrollment forms completed. Leader Doug Kershner recom-mended that elections be held at the next meeting when all members can be in atten-dance.

Doug also asked the mem-bers to come up with ideas for the club’s 10 hours of community service. Projects will be decided next month. Doug informed the 4-Her’s that Katie Plescac from the

extension office will be at the April meeting to provide Quality Assurance training for all members planning to show animals at the county fair. The meeting was adjourned and lunch was served by the Zeil-inger and Schultz families. The next meeting is scheduled for April 23, 2014 at 7 p.m. at the Garrison Hall.

Helping Lauren Hoeft cel-ebrate her 14th birthday with supper at the home of her parents on Saturday evening were Scott, Sandy, Megan and Morgan, Don and Marci Howe, Sharon Hoeft, Dawn Hoeft, Jeff Howe, Donald, Michelle and Annabelle Clary, Beth Zeilinger, Joanne Lukert, Heidi Rehmer, Gavin and Grace Rehmer.
